ok what i mean is, why cant your pet follow as closely and use proper pathfinding as a hostile MOB? case in point, cu sidhes, when im taming one he stays right on me, once hes tamed he slows his pace and becomes semi-stupid when it comes to going around corners. couldnt it be a simple change to make your pets follow you as loyally as a hungry monster does?

Yes, you have a common complaint that was recently discussed on FoF (see below). Hopefully they fix it, but we need to keep reminding them since they have so many other things on their plate right now things like this seem to slip thru...

From FoF: June 19, 2009

Why is it that pets are unable to navigate around a 1-tile obstacle unless their owner moves to a point where the pet could pathfind around the obstacle? In some extreme cases I have had to come back right to where the pet is and have it follow me on a 90 degree detour before it will move off the obstalce it's stuck on.
Ergh. The pet pathfinding code is really weak – it’s a single check for direct Line of Sight. It’s definitely something we want to look into since we use more advanced pathfinding with other mobs.

ah yes i musta missed that fof. thx. would be great if they could do a real simple cut and paste of the hostile follow code to the pet follow code :p

Great, you want pets to be more over powered?
No just want them to follow me or the monster they were order to attack. Seems silly they stuck on a rock and you have to run back to have them get off it.

This is a fairly comic level of tamerhate. I mean, have you ever played a tamer? Those stupid pets get stuck on *everything*. It's not a matter of power, it's a matter of frustration.

Pack horses are even worse since they move much more slowly than GDs and the like. I'd even be willing to deal with the crappy pathfinding on my tamer if my gathering mule's packies had the good kind.

omnius is referring to the effect it might have on pvp i think, i dont pet pvp at all so im not sure if your pet follows its target like a hostile mob, if it doesnt then a change to that would make it much harder to run from a tamers pet. the passive following of the owner is what we all want changed :p

Train your packies up so that their dex raises (and therefore their stam) if they are bonded that is. If you just buy packies, well there's no easy fix for them going slow. This is my current project anyways (packy training). :)

I've started doing this myself. It defintely speeds up their movement speed, and is well worth the time spent training them.

If you tell your pet "all come", it will activate pathfinding. When teleporting was not broken, telling your pet "all come" 3 times in a row would make them teleport to you.

The "follow" pathfinding AI and the "attack" AI are different as well.

"Follow" uses less nodes and is not as smart around obstacles. This was never upgraded.

"Attack" pathfinding was upgraded in one of the publishes. It uses a variable, which seems to be a pet's (or monster's) Int to determine how many pathfinding nodes it can use. Smart pets like a giant beetle (500 int) have very good pathfinding AI when attacking.

But if you tell it to follow you, it's alot dumber...

It affects all pets when they are not aggressive (from packy to GD). When they are ordered to attack or are attacked while in guard mode they use suddenly a more efficient pathfinding.

So this would in no way make pets more overpowered.
