So I finally get it!

I've seen people all over the boards complaining about how powerful tamers are, and how its so unfair and unbalanced and all that crap.

I've been training my first tamer for weeks. I still have 1.9% to go for gm taming, and I'm planning to go all the way to 120. ANd its taking FOREVER!!! This is by far the most difficult and most tedious skill I've ever trained.

Thus, for anyone who complains about tamers being disproportionately powerful, its not disproportionate at all. FOr as much as one must put into becoming a legendary tamer, its a perfectly reasonable reward=)

If you have gotten to a real 118.1 Taming then .... what can I say, you have a lot more persistence and tolerance to mind numbing tedium than me :)

Except no real work is required. I can get an advanced token, a talisman, and a ring and presto, I can control a GD, Dread Mare, or anything else.

Ya... gotta agree that this isn't right. I have no problem with the real skill being able to control the pets they do, but not with the set up you mention. Taming is the only skill I have an issue with too much skill mods.

No real work, just lots of time.

Sure you can used an advanced char and get to 85, maybe put on some jewels and make 115. You will suck though unless you got uber skill+mod rings. And if you forget to put them back on after you die and ur gd goes wild, i am sure u will be mad.

Tamers are powerful cause they worked hard to get there skills up. I have 120 and 110 real on my two tamers and it took me years to get there.

You can make a sampire pretty quickly and they are uber powerful. Mine can sit in the fan dancers balron room indefinately without any human interaction if i wanted. My GD would die in about 10 minutes...

Glad that you have join our side!
.........to add to the huge amount of perseverance it takes to become a real skill tamer, you have to spread your attention around. i.e., watch your pet and what it has aggroed on or aggroed onto it, heal pet, heal self, watch for aggros on self, if multiple pets add x2 to half of this.
Now how do people think all we do is say "all kill" and loot???
If your killing minor beasties it works sorta like that, but that gets boring extremely fast.......
Now that you have learned taming, its time to start learning about how to select a keeper pet. Good Luck!

I used to believe that tamers were rewarded with power for their perseverance. For a little while that seemed to be true. Then we got advanced characters, pet bonding, skill items etc etc. Taming may be boring and time consuming but it isn't hard. You can make an advanced character and go out with 2 kitsune straight off, no items.

Overpowered pets are more obvious when you take out the old pets for a while and then compare their capabilities with the last few we've gotten. Greaters are like taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut when you're used to more vulnerable pets ;) You'd be crazy to send any other fresh pet after a paragon bally. Greaters? Steady vetting and it's easy. I don't think that power is justifiable or necessary.

I know easy is what a lot of players want these days. My viewpoint is simply that of a tamer who's owned every pet out there and doesn't want to read a book while she hunts :D I'd like some balancing and future pets that I want to use, not tame and sell on lol.

I loved the pup/rune choice - damage output or a nice tank.

The GD is both but at least it's slow and easy to escape from the mare is both and a mount too and seems to cast from further away.

But the reptalon pwns them all :p

I DO agree about the jewels. The temptation is heavy to just slap some jewels on and go have fun, but I'm glad I've dodged it, partly because it opens up jewelry slots for other buffs, but mostly because I'd rather do things the right way than the easy way. And regarding the adv char tokens, it takes so much more time to get from 85-120 than it does to get from 0-85 that I really cant frown on it too much.

As for pets being unbalanced, I wish I had a tamer perspective of my own from the old days to compare it to. Sadly,I dont. It does appear, though, that gds are kind of unbalanced, though I havnt' yet tried one. I have learned, though, that animal ontrol is a hell of alot more complicated than "all kill" and loot!

so yes, I've been converted. If taming is pursued honorably, it is a perfectly fair system, and I'm glad to be a part of it=)

I do have that perspective and it is NOT tainted by the evolution of pets.

I left UO about 8 months after Trammel Went Live.

I returned just before Greater Dragons were introduced.

For those that do not know what Taming was like when I left, then a short picture.

There was no Line of Site to taming a mob. There were no Lore Screens as you know them now. The only information given was introduced shortly before I left and that was a line of text saying your White Wyrm has gained a point in skill in ... or can not gain anymore (GM).

There were no limits number of pets you could have in the stable, there were no limits on how many pets you could have with you,
pets new permanent death,
pets could be transferred to players that could not tame or control them ... to within reason so no you could not transfer a Nightmare to a 0 taming person but you could transfer to someone with -20 to -25 of the to tame skill required. Yes that person needed to carry a lot of meat with them, as it was a constant feeding thing,
there was Power Hour, you took your tamer, you went and tamed skill appropriate stuff, you gained in skill. At the end of the hour you went and played UO. You didnt need to wait through 200 days of GGS to go from 100.0 to 120.0

People might want to whine about the tamer with 10 pets but I think anyone that has ever had 5 pets out as a pack understand group pets present a problem and the more there are the more the problem is.

White Wyrms and Dragons and Nightmare were something to be feared. Even for the venerable Tank Mage these things could 1 hit kill you. As an example for the White Wyrm it was common to put a stack of gold on the ground with a box on top of that. That prevented the WW from getting into the ledge you could teleport to.

People would line up there and take turns taming the WW's in relative safety, Oh did I mention that as long as you did not damage the Mob it would not cast on you?. Now when some jerk axed the box, that WW could kill everyone that wasn't paying attention to events in short order, meaning if you saw that happened you had seconds to decide to teleport off the ledge.

The Dragons and White Wyrms I came back to were cream puffs, in terms of to be feared, dressed in just basic crap armor. The Nightmares were even more of a cream puff.

In my opinion all the old Pets are garbage (yes a bit harsh but ...) and the newer stuff Bake Kitsunes, Rune Beetles, Hiryu, Cu Sidhe and certainly the Greater Dragon are puting the Tamer closer to were it was when I left.

The Greater Dragon went a long ways towards correcting this travesty and in no way is over powering. Consider a Group of PKR's vs a Tamer with a single Greater Dragon. If that GROUP (2+ people) can not beat that tamer then they sure as heck do not deserve to win.

In the past one's ability to control pets was influenced by the number of pets you had out of the stable. I remember having 5 White Wyrms out for many hunts but the control was iffy and sometimes they even went wild.

One feature from the old days I really miss: the dozens and dozens of pets that sold at Brit Bank. Very social!

Hi everyone!

Just for the sake of two cents...

I started a tamer almost 6 years ago and could not gain... got it within 10 pts of an advanced charrie... was a bit unhappy with the template and then did the tamer unthinkable... used that darned token. I spent the whole of my UO life trying and couldn't get over the hump.

With the token... I started 10 pts richer and seemed to gain better. I still tame everyday... off and on... I mainly do lead taming with Cu's for gains.. or Unicorns but using the token gave me back something I was missing. Excitement in having a tamer. Which to me was more important than how I got those 10 extra pts.

As for mods... they are no more unfair on a tamer than they are on anything else. My dexer took 2 seconds to gain 115 in swords, anatomy and tactics. My mage took 2 days bank sitting and casting to hit 115. Taming took years... it is the hardest skill in the game to raise... period. Takes more time than anything to use... and there are no tricks or neat training techniques. Sooo... yes... if a tamer wants to step out and take a break from the work using mods... or needs the mods for pts because the template is packed... so what? How is anyone slighted by this? I think taming is hard enough without letting the tamers just play for a bit... I like my mods.. I adore my pets and I still do the work so I won't need them one day.

And anyone who says tamers have an unfair advantage... well... they obviously never tried taming. Unfair? I think tamers have earned the advantage of a Greater that can battle it out with something that would one-hit any individual.

TAMING ROCKS! :thumbsup::danceb::thumbsup:
