why is there no option to make boards in the carpenter menu?

Because you can now use an axe directly on the stack of logs in your backpack.

Boards are now what a Lumberjack makes, the same as a smith can't smelt stuff into ingots unless he has the Mining skill.

You can make logs into boards using Lumberjacking or Carpentry, same method as described above.

Months ago - and if you'd checked the Craftsman forum before asking here, you would have found a sticky about boardmaking (not to mention the Carpentry & Bowcrafting FAQs) that explained the change.

Since you can smelt ingots from your bank, you should be able to make logs into boards from your bank as well...

do it, as you would cut an heavy stack of hides, but replace scissors with the axe and the stack of hides with the stack of logs.

Apples and oranges mate; I don't cut my own hides, but I do need to chop my own boards.

Well, make an ingame macro - last object - last target and assign it a hotkey.
Use the axe on the logs in the bank.
(Will fail.)
Drag the logs with the mouse and while they are still hanging on the mouse cursor, execute the macro.
Now the boards should be in your backpack.
(Assuming the 2D client, never tried in 3D.)
