The templates at the bottom of this page date back to before power scrolls, can the folk here get together and supply me with viable modern templates please?

http://uo.stratics.com/content/professions/taming/taming-chartemplates.shtml

Any other help with those pages would be appreciated, I've re-written the animal lore page, but I think I can get away with just updating small parts of the others, if I can spot all the bits that are out of date.

This is the proposed new lore page, bear in mind it's a 'work in progress', the bar of links to the other pages hasn't been added yet.

My Bard Tamer:

120 Peace
110 Music
110 Discord
105 Animal Lore
90 Animal Taming
100 Veterinary
85 Magery

On equipment, I'd suggest the bare minimum of:

Birds of Britania Talisman (+5 taming, +5 lore)
On Rings/Bracelets, +10 discord, +15 taming
Sleeves with +12 Music (craftable)
On whatever you can fit it: +15 or more Magery

Works like a dream, with 99% control of a greater dragon.

Thank you!

More help please, I'm working on the pets page and am pretty sure some of these messages are no longer in use, but which ones?

[petname] looks around desperately
[petname] looks somewhat annoyed
[petname] seems nervous and irritable
Your pet does not seem to be interested in making new friends right now
The pet refuses to be transferred because it will not obey [name]
The pet refuses to be transferred because it does not trust you
Your pet refuses to follow that person
That wasn't even challenging
The animal has been distracted and you cannot continue taming
The animal is too angry to continue taming
This animal has had too many owners and is too upset for you to tame
You seem to anger the beast
You have no chance of taming this creature
You can't tame that

Hinotori is right this stuff should be designated as With and with out Jewelry. It should probably also indicate the DCI, and Mage Weapon status. Or there should be some good write up by those that know the intimate details of DCI and Mage Weapon characteristics. The best I could do is probably misleading, DCI = Chance to Dodge/Avoidance an attack. Mage Weapon = Chance to Block an attack. Then of course the are the Resistances.

Thank you all. I have now replaced 7 of the 9 templates, however I'm reluctant to repeat any and there are rather a lot of disco tamers among those listed here. I'm a bit unsure of the 'pro's and cons' of each template too. The new, not quite finished, page is here: http://uo.stratics.com/php-bin/show_content.php?content=30915. I'm hoping to get the full set of pages completed and announced in tomorrow's update. Any feedback to improve them would be appreciated.

At your discretion and my mistake for not putting it in, for the Stealth Tamer Pro's, can stealth to the Pet, for veting, fighting a Paragon Mob without invoking the Paragons Re target ability.

This really is not a Pro for any one template. This can be done with simple player tactics. Command the pet to "follow you" then commanded it to "kill" the paragon. Saying that it is a pro for a stealth template can mislead someone to think they can vet while hidden/stealthed (they will always reveal).

Petra - I like that you are updating this to reflect power scroll usage, but it gives the impression that you absolutely need to scroll your skills to be a tamer. This is not true. There are very lethal/effective pets that can be controlled 99% of the time at GM Taming and Lore (examples: nightmare, unicorn, bake kitsune, rune beetle). Please try to work this in, or emphasize it somehow. Not scrolling your Taming and Lore gives you forty extra skill points to use elsewhere, which make a world of difference.

This is not to be argumentative, it is to perhaps better explain why I see it is a Pro and for the record, in my opinion, Petra should not be burdened with the task of deciding all the Pro's and Con's of each template in a vacuum. It is my opinion that an assertion - challenge form of debate/discussion would certainly make her job easier.

Hum, Paragon Balrons focus on Moving Players. Hence the improved ability to actually vet Your pet. I am not sure I have ever had the experience of doing Paragon Ballys and be able to walk up to my pet, that is fighting the PB and start veting in peace. It has been my experience that if I so much as twitch wrong that Paragon Bally will most certainly ignore my Pet and target me.

At first I thought you were going to say that any one that can cast Teleport can teleport, if allowed, next to your pet then stand perfectly still.

Though he had the orders mixed up (or more accurately, forgot to mention a step), he's right that paragons can be safely brought into vetting range by using "all kill" to target the paragon and following with an "all follow" to bring your pet, paragon in tow, back to your character, at which point another "all kill" targeting the paragon leaves you within 1 tile of your paragon-fighting pet and you untargetted.

Honestly, stating that as a pro is a bit silly, since just about any taming template around can perform the same function without relying on the stealth skill.

there are numerous ways to handle paragons, maybe I should add that in. Personally I send the pet in and then teleport to its side, I find it gets damaged too much if I call it back to me once battle is engaged.
I think of paragons as like the T rex in Jurassic Park. It only sees moving targets. :D

Barry, I asked for templates and used those posted here - several of them don't have 120 taming, but none have less than 110. I leave the last 2 of the original templates in to show all gm skills.

Ok, these are based on a skill cap of 700 and no item usage so newbie tamer friendly templates:

Stealth shepherd tamer:

Tame 110
Lore 110
Vet 110
Hiding 100
stealth 80
Magery 90
Herding 100

Pros:
Can scout dungeons or pet spawn areas
Herding enables movement of wild and tame pets while hidden/stealthing
Ideal template for selecting pets and stealth herding them to a quiet taming spot

Cons:
No meditation so requires careful mana use.
Lower magery damage due to lack of eval int skill

I've kept all the taming skills at 110 there to try and give good stable slots and control. GM stealth/magery would be ideal but I ran out of skill points :D I also prefer any item use to be on non-taming skills which is why I weighted them like that.

I'd do a basic mage stealth tamer like this:

Taming 110
Lore 110
Vet 100
Magery 100
Eval 100
Hiding 100
Stealth 80

Pros:
Able to scout out areas
Offensive magery capability

Cons:
No meditation so requires careful mana use.
Vet skill may restrict where you can hunt

All my other templates rely too heavily on 720 skill to really adapt to a 700 cap, but I'm not that keen on suggesting my wierd mish-mashes to newbies anyway lol.

Teleport is an awesome spell to use too. I've used it countless times fighting paragon Balrons (during the Melissa/Casca event). It does not count as movement, so the paragon keeps ignoring you. It is a good tactic to use when you are fighting paragons with other tamers (you can teleport to their location too).

I assumed that you (the tamer) already commanded the pet to attack the target.

You are getting excellent input so far. I just wanted to voice a concern, so that you could have a more complete set of templates. Based on what I have seen so far, this will be one of the best improvements to UO Stratics.

We're doing our best. :) I was rather proud of the quest pages I did. I didn't organise them in the same way as some other sites, I hoped users would find my way easier to find what they wanted.
Though I've still got to update the items database with all those special items, both needed for the quests and obtained as rewards :(

Preferred Foods:
Metal - Lava Lizard (confirmed he ate a dagger, a double axe, a katana, iron ingots, shadow ingots, iron ore, and shadow ore, what a champ )
Eggs - Snake

120 Spell Weaving
115 Lore
100 Magery, Crystaline Ring puts it to 120
100 Focus, Crystaline Ring puts it to 120

I am sure you have noticed there is no VET or anat, First don't let your pet die, second use Gift of life on your bonded pet in case it dies.

There is some left over skill points, which allows you not to have to use the Crystaline ring, but the ring is nice because of the spell damage increase and the mana regen. You could possiably use the extra skill points in necro to get in wraith form so you can leach mana, But i would not rely on this for mana all the time.

Let me tell you my Suit to give you an idea,

Kasa of Rajin (Resists and Spell Damage Increase) Could Replace with HOM
Spell Woven Britches (Spell Damage Increase)
Rune Beatle Carcass (Mana)
Pendant of the magi ( LRC, Mana and Spell Damage increase)
Stitchers Mittens (LRC, Decent Resists)
20 LRC Sleeves with High Physical
Ornament of the magician (20 lrc)
Crystaline Ring (Spell Damage Increase, Mana)
Totem of the Void

You will have no problems with mana with this suit and template,
One could venture off and drop focus for eval and see how that works.

Some Tips on playing this template/character:

Take advantage of gift of life, and gift of renewal, after playing this template a few days you will get a feeling when to use gift of renewal and when it expires, Use gift of life on your self and the dragon.

A high level Arcane Focus (Circle) a MUST

Champ Spawn, Hide, Get the Mob on your dragon and heal drag or cast gift of renewal, On low level spawns, use essence of wind, you will have a hard time getting rid of all of your mana. On the Boss Word of death like crazy, cooresponding with Gift of Renewal.

Get a Greater dragon with good physical and Fire resists and HP in the 900's

Make a Macro for attunment in case somethingn unexpected starts attacking you.

Take Protection off when ever possiable, this will make a world of difference when healing your dragon with Greater heal.

Get your Honor up.

in conclusion i swear on a decent connection you will be able to keep your dragon alive
