Are they worth opening?
Because the drops from them from the previous 2 ToT events are completely worthless. Have anyone tried to lockpick a few from this event? Can you get anything special from this?

Any help is greatly appriciated. So I can turn them in if it's nothing but a fancy container (and is the container graphic unique? or can you make something that looks the same with different name than "Chest of Heirlooms")

It is not a unique graphic (it is a renamed wooden footlocker, which is craftable). The loot is usually not exceptional, although you can see what it is by putting it on a vendor as mentioned above. The sentimentalist is me opened one to use as a sort of hope chest in the bedroom of my house.

I actually open a few and keep them for decor.

In my experience, they are about on par with Level 5 Paragon chests. You might get a halfway decent item, but odds aren't that great.

I always thought that the Chest of Heirlooms should have a small chance of containing a Major Artie, that would spice it up a little... right now they are pretty much turn-ins for me and nothing else.
