So most of us began our time in UO in the city of Haven.. or what's now dubbed "Old Haven". The convenient city that had everything we needed. The bank, cool little smith shop with a roof to protect us from miscellaneous falling objects thrown from players on the top of said bank, and a small inn and tavern near the water where new players would gather to share stories and trade skill techniques...

I just took a stroll to Old Haven's ruins and it just hit me that I really miss the old Haven. I was never personally a fan of New Haven, maybe because I 'grew up' with Old Haven, but it's just not the same. The feeling's not there.. New Haven compared to Old Haven is, for me, New York City taking over what was once a small, nestled village in the forest. Clutter, confusion, and over-development.

Is anyone else with me? Right about now I'd give up a few mil just to hang out in the Haven smith shop again.

The bank was close to the water so you could off load a boat straight to the bank was the bomb.

I've often found myself wishing Haven would be redone. Occolo is a good stand in but it's not the same. New Haven is serviceable, personally, I really really like how the bar is set up back a bit behind the bank and healer.

I miss Old Haven, too. I loved hanging out as a Companion, back when only youngs and Companions were allowed. it was amazing.

Things in New Haven are very confusin when you're just getting used to them. I mean, I can't tell you how long I had to walk around with "music shop" escorts before abandoning them, because I couldn't find it. The whole place is counterintuitive. Old haven felt more like a town, you know?

I heartily agree.

The destruction of the old makes no sense to me - not when it's replaced by clamoring, crowded, cramped and ugly surroundings. I frequented Haven quite a bit in my Companion days, and even enjoyed the hunting area that was reached through the guardhouse. It was peaceful, beautiful and useful.

I must admit to a growing unhappiness with Draconi's urge to blow things up Just Because. Haven, Magincia...actually, 'unhappy' is putting it a wee bit mildly. If one more town gets blown up that isn't named Luna, I'll be ready to put paid to my tenure here. :)

The purpose of New Haven make plenty of sense to me: to provide a way for newbies to learn how to use skills. Old Haven didn't really do that. At all. It was just an area where you would be likely to find other young players (or people recalling in and running down the street yelling "SELLING CRYSTAL BALLS AND MOONSTONES" every five minutes. They wouldn't accept the cat I'd tamed as payment, either).

Likely the reason you remember Old Haven with such fondness is because it had a larger population back in the day. Though, heck, if they were to move a moongate into New Haven, it'd likely quickly take over from Luna.

Bugger Old Haven, let's have Ocllo! Actually I rather like the crowded design of New Haven, and much prefer it to both Ocllo and Old Haven.

I'm still not a fan of the destruction of perfectly nice cities. But at least Haven was rebuilt. How long have we waited for Magincia?

Too long. I've also talked to a lot of new players over the past few months just gauging a general opinion of what they think of New Haven... and sadly, most of them say they can't find what they need. The biggest complaint is (as someone else stated) not being able to find where to bring quest giving escorts.

*sigh* Oh well, I hope some of these changes are at least bringing some people to UO.

New haven is ugly. Old Haven was useless. Start up cities like britain and moonglow were the best places to be born.

I was born in Britain, the city of lights. The city that never slept(seriously, everyone was there 24 hours a day even when being robbed by thieves they were there and loving it). There was all sorts of local color. stories being told, battles litterally being waged right there. The rich and poor separated by 20k gold.

*grins*

I was born in the old Vesper Youth Hostel - evidently before the resident physician had their medical license revoked. It was the best place to grow up, ever!

I miss Haven myself.

I was one of the nicer citys. Nice big bank. Boats could be close by. A Park with benches.

It actually felt more like a small town than most other towns in UO.

But guess what...I contributed to the destruction :)
I dont know who those blackrock traders were....thought they could help me out. :(

They blew up the wrong city IMO.
I'll keep my rocks to myself from now on. :talktothehand:

UO music doesn't sound at all familiar to me. Did they redo it since 1999? Thats the last time I ever played with sound.

Occlo has sentimental value to me. However, Occlo looked kind of unlovingly designed. New Haven looks much better and has more to offer for new players. Thus, I prefer New Haven.

I miss it too, I guess its mostly nostalgia, thinking back to early days when you would meet other newbies and sit on the benches by the waterfall discussing what to do next.

As another poster has said it had a 'feel' to it, it gave me a sense of home and belonging and I suppose now its gone that feeling will never return.

Ah well, life moves on.

The older music is played via MIDI, which sounds different depending on the computer you play it through. Unless UO contains it's own MIDI synth, which I somewhat doubt.
