Is anyone noticing an issue with fighting multiple non-player attackers at once?

Recently I've been training my paladin and I've noticed that he always seems to get into situations where more than one NPC or monster is attacking him when he's dragged some off to where the rest are a screen away from him.

I've also noticed that he seems to get a lot of trouble from hitting NPC's or monsters which he wasn't originally hitting. He seems to target switch to the newest incoming monster/NPC all the time. This is just from fighting ordinary surface spawn in Trammel, near Trinsic moongate. This target switching behaviour would be okay if he'd actually HIT what went to target him but he seems to stay there passively and not hit on anything that's coming to him while he's on his original attacker, like he's confused or something. He also seems less capable of hitting his original attacker when another attacker starts whacking on him, he seemed to be getting caught up on something as lowly as a sewer rat while other spawn piled damage on him. This means I spend more time running off to heal his hitpoints than fighting, with the usual occasional death due to too many attackers at once.

A few questions I've got:

His weapon speed is 2.75s and dex is 50, should I try to get him a faster weapon or more dex?

Does he need to lure spawn further away in order to fight it 1v1?

Does casting Consecrate Weapon, Divine Fury and EOO as needed (for Chivalry increases) interfere with the normal process of raising swordsmanship skill by the way the chivalry skill interacts with the other skills?

He is a bit low on tactics, only 37 skill compared to 53.9 swordsmanship, is there anything he can do that would raise tactics faster than swordsmanship?

If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it, but I think there's some kind of bug with all of that target switching going on.

Cheers ...

Your char should attack any mob that you double click, and kill it before switching targets.

Also if you did not double click a mob and you are just allowing him to fight the first mob that targeted him than if another mob aggros him he will switch to that mob and start fighting it.

Note that also increased mobs damage = increased missing, when you are being hit constantly it is much harder to swing a weapon.

chiv has no bearing on your sword gains, so you are good there.

you need more stamina if you want to swing faster, 2.25 is the fastest weapon base speed, so either ssi or more stamina to swing faster, this will help.

do not worry to much about tactics, it will gain on its own. and it only really affect damage and the use of the two weapon specials, but there is nothing you can do to gain tactics faster than swords other than locking the swords skill.

I hope this answers all your questions, and be sure to say so if it does not I will respond again.

Tactics and Swords will only gain if fighting something within about 20 points of your ranges.

Swords/Archery/Wrestling/Macing/Fencing all count as basic "weapon skills". So if you wish to gain in one, your target must have a comparable skill level in one of the others.

While the Tactics ranges are checked separately.

Example: You're attacking a target with 70 Wresting/Tactics. You have 54 Swords skill, which is within 20 points of the 70 Wrestling your target has, so you can get gains.

On the other hand, you only have 37 Tactics. This is well below 20 points of your target's 70 - you need at least 50 Tactics to gain off that target.

Find something with a Tactics range closer to your own and fight that until your Swords/Tactics skills are more or less balanced out. You'll likely have no further troubles once this is achieved.

Anatomy is not difficulty based and will gain regardless of what you attack.

Well, went out on a hunch and started fighting hinds and llamas, gained a point off them, and gained another 2-3 points after eventually switching over to brown bears. That seemed to bring up the points gains on tactics a lot faster, and swordsmanship wasn't raising too fast. The leather was also nice, collected 600+ leather off them just fighting stuff near the Moonglow Zoo.

Many thanks for the pointers. I hope I can find something that'll get my tactics closer to my swordsmanship.

Spellbinders are actually in the right range, and'll give Resist points too - but they're fairly easy to kill.

Mummies are also a good match, and drop seeds and bandages. They also appear in Virtue dungeons if you want the artis.

Targeting: You have the UO targeting system on and set to nearest mobile or something ... that would cause the target switching I believe. I never used the system, but just dragged up health bars or whatever. The system was too much of a pain for me. <shrug>

Low Skills: Go train in New Haven on ANY skill under 50! One, doing the training under the guidance of the instructor allows for accelerated skill gains in the old town. Two, the reward from the skill quest is sometimes pretty darn nice for warriors in training. I seem to recall the Tactics reward is armors with decent resists for the new character.

Stats and weapons: I'm not quite sure the speed of it but you might want to try a Radiant Scimitar (it's similar to a Soul Seeker). Katana ia also a fast Swords weapon ... 2.5s I believe. Just use NPC weapons for now until you can buy somewhat better ones from players.

Chiv spells: Watch out with EoO! You will receive 100% damage from ANYTHING not the same as what you tag as your "enemy" ... ie., cast EoO while fighting rats and a troll attacks you. You will receive 100% damage from the troll.

Area effect: Watch it when using weapons with "Hit <something> area" on them and the Chiv spell Holy Light. These will inflict damage to ANYTHING in radius - even wandering healers and so forth! This will certainly bring down some whoopazz on ya.

First, yes you need a much faster wep. Second, you should be hitting the lizardmen in Despise. The gains will fly and you'll be able to get stacks of spined leather to boot.

As a guide.... a weapon that has 2.5 speed needs 150 stamina (that's dex + stamina increase items), so that you swing at the max 1.25 swings per second. Of course SSI will allow for lower stamina.
I recomend a high SSI weapon for the most part for your training.

Just be careful with Enemy of One... if you're fighting ONLY lizardmen, then you're good! If an earth elemental wanders to you, then you get MORE damage to you. It can get you in trouble if you're not careful.
