Hi,

I'm trying to play UO again after another 12 month break. I haven’t really managed to be active since AOS but for nostalgia reasons I want to make a real concerted effort to play for a couple of months (this is also a money saving exercise for me, keep me indoors with the cats).
My main shard was always Europa, although I am currently going through the rather arduous process of making a character on Siege too. I also have a very old 7x GM character on Drachenfels which I was thinking of transferring to Atlantic as I hear it's pretty active 24/7 and lots of the shards seem dead.

I have a bunch of questions, some Siege and some Europa specific but I think the main board is the best place so I can get this in one big post... Please don’t reply saying 'UO is dead' or 'dueling is dead', the last times I have tried to return after a break I got a bit bogged down by all the negativity. I am absolutely determined to play UO again properly for two months and then check out SA with a fresh mind. So, my questions:

- First Siege question: So I made a new char on Siege, thinking it might be the best place to find a good PVP community and I'm really confused about ROT. Currently I have all skills locked and I'm working nothing but Margery. It's around 76.6... I was under the impression that I could only gain 3.6 in any one day (up to 79.9). Yesterday I gained around 4.0 in Margery alone... Also, can someone please explain the total daily cap for skills? Can I gain 3.6 a day in Margery, Med, Eval and Resist? It seems not, but I can't for the life of me grasp the daily cap. I'd like to think im not stupid, but the play guide and stratics explanation of ROT don’t tally with what ive seen in game.

- What is the PVP mage template de rigeur at the moment? It seems to be 5x 120 classic pure Mage with GM inscription? Is this actually the case (I previously played hally mage, poison\inscription mage, archer\tactics mage)?

- What is the state of dueling in UO today? Where does it happen, what is the current etiquette? Do people duel naked, or with items? Who are known as the best duelers in UO today, Europa and Siege and possibly Atlantic?

- Following on from that above question, how has mage fighting changed after AOS? This might be an expansive question, but I'm really interested in the technical details. The most enjoyment I ever had with UO was precast weapon mage dueling and also (Publish 16?) archery\harm template dueling - that template and tactics seemed more refined the European shards at the time, US shards seemed to be 5x mage skill pure dueling, but I digress...
How do the fast recovery and faster casting mods effect mage fights, or is the convention to duel naked? On my first little forays out and about I noticed people basically casting magic arrow repeatedly in one-on-ones, this looked a little lame.
If there are any active PVPers on here, I would be indebted to you if you could write me a paragraph refresher for an experience pre-AOS duelist and general PVPer.

- Siege Question: I've registered on the NEW forum (although it hasn’t been Oked yet), I will probably ask to join for a bit, but I wanted to canvas opinion on PVP guilds with fairly mature members who I might be able to tap up for membership :p I'm an adult, with a job and my primary enjoyment from UO was gained playing an honorable PVP focused play style (that was community heavy).

- For a mage, what is the minimum PVP suit you can fight with? What's an acceptable goal and what artifacts should I go after to build a decent suit. On Siege, I presume this doesn’t matter too much? When I left UO I have five million in the bank, 12-15 months ago whilst not a huge amount of cash, it was something. Not it seems virtually worthless. How much do you think you need on a non Siege ruleset shard to build a good PVP suit?

Thanks in advance guys, sorry for all the questions

RoT Guildlines (updated for publish 55)

70 - 79.9 5.0 (max) points per day, 5 minutes between gains
80 - 89.9 4.0 (max) points per day, 8 minutes between gains
90 - 99.9 3.0 (max) points per day, 12 minutes between gains
100 - 109.9 3.0 (max) points per day, 15 minutes between gains
110 - 120 2.0 (max) points per day, 15 minutes between gains
This is total. For all skills trained. If you work a skill in a higher skill point area, you move up to the next cap number. This is why people will lock skills to make sure they maximize their gains...la

Welcome back...UO IS ALIVE!

I cant really talk about too much siege/europa specific, i made a char on siege but the draw of my home shard is too strong(great lakes).

What i was going to do is tell you the 2versions of the current mage suit on GL(faction and non same arties)

1)(most common and most expensive)

Armour of Fortune(around 12mil on GL)
Folded Steel Reading Glases(around 8mil)
Inquisitors Resolution(around 25mil)Ornament of the Magician(around 10mil)
Crystaline ring(around 12mil)
Crimson Cinture(around 12-15mil)
Totem of the void (around 1mil)

Then you have 3pieces of armour to make the resist and 40%LRC, if you run the wrestle parry mage then this can make the suit les expensive as now weapon is needed. If not...expect another 20mil on that!

2)(Ive seen alot of these in factions)

Heart of the Lion(around 200k)
Pendant of the Magi(around a mil or 2, usually free if you find a nice person :))
Folded Steel Reading glasses(8mil)
Ornament(as above)
*Crystaline Ring
*Totem of Void
**+15magery ring with 0/3casting(ALOT!)
**Treatise of achemy.
Crimson Cinture.

*Faction suit
**Non-Faction Suit

This suit is alot cheaper to make, and if you plan to go wrestle parry mage then you dont need the +magery on the ring, just an 0/3 with other mods. This once again makes the suit alot cheaper.

Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot for this!

Could you please expand a little on the non-parry and parry templates you mention? My char is 6x 120 with parry, this was my last change when i came back after my last break, however it looks like 80+ dex is needed for parry now? On your shard what are the most popular mage templates?

Thanks again for your response :)

Ill post some templates that i know of, however there are alot of variations people use.

Pure necro/mage(more of a spawn than duelist)

120mage
120med
120eval
120ss
120resist
100necro(increasing as account age increases up to 120)

Pure mage(this is the "accepted" mage dueling template)

120mage
120med
120eval
120resist
120wrestle
100Inscription/Parry(im not sure, i think the parry is more for field fights).

Then, all other variations appear to drop resist spells to pick up, say poisoning.

With the necro template, that is the one you need to have a -mage weap on for DCI.

You're accessed to the NEW forums Rorchach, and the FAQ in the top section explains RoT should you need it for reference.

Usually new folk to Siege are guilded for a month while they train, learn about Siege and get to know other players on the shard. After a month we ask if you know which guild you'd like to join, if not, we ask your playstyle and help you find one that will 'fit' both you and the guild approached to recruit you, if you need some more time we simply extend your NEW time by a week or two, no-one leaves NEW to go solo unless it's what they want.

In NEW we understand most players are simply new to Siege Perilous and not to UO, you will find the majority are mature.

Hope to meet you soon and if there's anything you need just ask. My icq is 9-626-593 (Elaine)

Tactics i dont know.

Mage Dueling etiquettue:

Agreed templates before hand (pure mage is the wrestle scribe one i mentioned)
Generally no pots
No apples
Confined space
No shield(usually a lantern and spellbook)
No poisoning
No tactics(although these are both in templates)
No pets

The general etiquettue seems to be decided before the fight. Oh and Obviously...NO INTERFERENCE! hehe

Note: these are just from the duels ive seen/been involved in

My guild on Siege hosts a Fight Night for dueling. Its held in an arena and the rules are aren't as rigid as those above. They are pretty straightforward, no pets, no summons, no fields, no faction arties, no looting. Of course, you and your opponent can set additional rules if you like. All Doom, cursed, major and minor arties are allowed.

Some of the best duelers on Siege include Virgil Starkwell, Gu'Jek, Sprago, Puffy, Draxous, Kage, Forsaken, Ghengis Khan, Sunchicken, Righty and Poison Ivy to name a few.

Occasionally someone will hold a bracketed tourney that requires an entrance feel and much stricter rules, with the jackpot going to the winner.

Hi guys,

Right, my return has lasted longer than last time. I've spent the time between my last post filling bods and killing monsters, very much *not* my play style historically but I have to say its been quite good fun.

My goal has been rying to get a suit together for my eventual return to PvP, this is what i have so far:

LRC 100, LMC 38, FCR 3, FC 2, DCI 48, MI 13. HR 1. MR 1
Resists are 70 physical, 70 fire and 70 energy and I think I have 61 cold and maybe 59 poison.

This is with a bucker with one hand free, ring slot still to fill. Obviously I need to get a ring with FC3 but how crippling is only having 1 MR? I find putting a suit together so difficult.. Is getting a ring with 3 FCR and some MR going to be really expensive? Where do I look for good rings, the Luna and Umbra seem to have a bunch of junk? Any other gaps you can spot?

Purely on a dueling aspect,

61cold resist is going to hurt due to harm being used alot.

If that suit is from loot...CONGRATS! Its not a bad suit.

I have been speaking to a few duelists on GL and they have all told me that max LMC fire cold and energy suits with around 18MR are what they roll with(admitadly theyve been playing alot longer and have ornies/crystalines and inquis)

A cheap route may be to join factions and use the faction crystaline/orny.
That gives you 2/6casting 5hpr and 6MR +20magery and focus 10lmc 20lrc just on those 2 items. Only issue with that is a) getting rank and b)getting silver.

Edit: sorry forgot to say, the only rings with MRon it a crystaline ring(3mr) and the spring cleaning ring(1mr).

You seem to have put together a fairly decent suit for yourself so far, just needs a couple of tweaks and you'll be good to go from what I can see!

I've got a pretty nice ring on Europa which would seem to suit your needs perfectly see here:
http://vboards.stratics.com/showthread.php?t=144375

Would take you to your cap for FCR and LMC and give you most of the SDI you need (Its a 15% Cap in PvP) It also takes you over your cap on DCI which is very useful as it will lessen the effects of Hit Lower Defense which all dexxers carry these days.

Not too much of a problem IMO ;)

The first thing a mage aims to do when fighting is curse his opponent which takes your cold resistance down to 60 anyway, so having cold above 60 isn't essential.

Poison being low on the other hand, is a slightly larger problem when you come up against a necro, you will struggle badly because corpse skin comibined with poison strike will very high damage.

Curse is a little slow in dueling although used, harm is a common disrupt and pure mage doesnt tend to include necro. However you points are valid.

Dueling is basically a competition of who casts weaken the most. Archers are going to 2 shot you with low cold/psn resist. There are too many out there with capped dmg output and a heavy crossbow. You will get moving shotted for damn near 40 by someone with a prepatch QOR (plus hit spell).
