FOF: Suggestion and Constructive Criticism

Constructive Criticism about the Five on Friday:

While I find the FOF a must useful feature, I wonder if we couldn't answer much more important and relevant questions there, that really bother the player base.

Instead of talking about bamboo stools (overprized useless deco items), side spawns in Bedlam, Magincia rubble, housing tilesets in SA, Vorpal Blades (what is that?), dirt patches or questions that can be reviewed on the SA FAQ page, there would be other issues that are much much more pressing, like:

  • What's the status about speed hacking? How and when will this be solved?
  • Did you already find a solution against ghost cams?
  • A long time ago, you talked about re-balancing combat. When is this going to happen?
  • There are many totally useless spells in every spellcasting skill (from Ninjitsu to Magery). Will you look into those spells when doing your re-balancing project?
  • Are you working on a solution for balancing the economy and against inflation?
  • What are your plans to make this game easier accessible to new players?
  • Any plans or ideas about finding a more intelligent solution against notorious PKs? Splitting the world into Trammel and Felucca was and is one of the biggest makeshifts/mistakes in UO history, and every game designer knows it. Do you work on any concepts, or do you plan to leave it as it is?

I could go on for hours with questions like these. Really, while asking about whether hueing our pets ultramarine blue will be possible might be exciting for some tamer nerd, the rest of us doesn't give anything about such questions. We care about issues that really have an impact on the game: bugs, exploits, loopholes, problems, balancing issues. Things that have been bothering us for months and years. Problems that make people quit and prevent new people from joining the UO community. A regular status update on those would really be helpful.

I remember a post from many moons ago.. how the FoF should answer one pvp issue, one pvm issue, one "want" issue, one "what's in the future" issue, and something else.

I thought this was the best format.. wish I could find the post. But no matter, it probably won't happen.

I have a Question then...

- When will the current Status Quo Change?

Right now we have:
- training scripts,
- resource gathering scripts,
- heartwood scripts,
- collection scripts,

These are related to getting your character equiped and maxed skills plus extra gold for your stat scrolls...

Then you have the interacting scripts:
- Medic
- Team Target
- Lag scripts

Which are added to speedhacks... and providing the tools to crush the enemies and dominate the spawning areas...

Any plans to bring back anything similar to a fair character development and pvp interaction?

Thank you.

Belittling other peoples' playstyles is a good way to show you are looking out for what is best in the game?

Out of curiosity, did you submit any of those questions you wish were answered?

( actually, there's also another problem with your questions: they aren't so much questions as feature requests and the ones that are security/exploit-related aren't usually talked about publicly anyway; also, it has been stated that the rebalance pass is going to wait until after SA is released, as its not terribly efficient to get everything tweaked and tuned right before you throw new skills and items into the mix; that all said, asking doesn't hurt :) )

Well... maybe because what is "important and relevant" is different to different players/play-styles??? Honestly, 6 of your 7 "important issues" are totally irrelevant to me...

From the long threads about the stool, I thought it was a very relevant topic.

Given how many people DO care about the "useless deco", I'd say the stool question (Oh my.) was a good one.

I can answer your last question: no, they're not going to "do anything about" the Trammel/Felucca split. As poor an idea as it was, you can't unring that bell. Too many people are well ensconced in Trammel now. The only option would be to turn Felucca on for all facets, ala Siege, and perhaps include a PvP flag, but that wouldn't help either. It wouldn't change the situation one whit, because the same people now who won't leave Trammel would just turn off their PvP flags, and be able to get the same rewards from Felucca as those who don't... I like the way things are. I get rewarded for not being too skeered to swing a pickaxe in a place with dead trees.

So many good and bad comments here... hard to decide what to reply...

First off.... playstyles... thank the heavens there are so darn many!... It's what keeps this game alive!

Yes some of us DO care about deco.... quite a bit in-fact. It's my #1 favorite thing to do in-game.

Have you really tried submitting questions? Well I have.... and you know not a single one has been answered yet in a FoF. Hum... Imagine that.

How about "What is ever going to be done about my dragons flight?!" I hate that he's been grounded... one of my favorite things to do was to watch him fly behind me as we took on the countryside.... do I care that some folk were using the ability of flight as an exploit to kill people in their homes... Yes. But was it really necessary to remove the flight all together?

Balanced PvP? Well some can be if we could only do away with the cheats and hacks... what a dream that would be... no more scripting cheaters. But even if they "had" something in development it's not possible for them to speak of it. Why give the cheaters a heads up?

I'd rather know if the the hideously ugly male paperdoll in KR is going to be "fixed" for SA? Or will I have to shut my eyes to dress my char? I pray he won't look like a baboon...

Will I be able to sit properly in SA? Or will I still "hover" over my seat? Can I sit on a bed? How about lay down? Sit in the grass? Will motions be finally added back into the client like we had in 3d?

It's all in what you care about... sure I care about PvP... to a point. I also care about fair gameplay... What I don't care about is Felluca... Sure I go there I'm not too Skeert... But do I think everyone should have to? NO. Do I think that Trammel should go away... NO.... I'll tell you this straight up... if it weren't for Trammel I wouldn't be playing.... and all of my many accounts would not exist... Sure after Trammel many things were lost, but many others were gained.

It's those that abused and exploited the system that ruined game play for everyone... forcing EA/UO to do radical things to attempt to "fix" the problem. Its still those who abuse and exploit the system that are ruining game play today... The hackers, Dupers, and scripters. Not felluca/trammel. Not the DEV's... but the players themselves who cheat and exploit the rest of us.

Ive asked almost everything you just stated in my FOF questions that ive sent in for the last 6+months. I just made a word file wrote my questions and resend them every week because they do not answer any of them.

Some new ones are.

Why are opposing factions allowed to heal and res each other?
Why cant you kick ghosts from despise?
The quivers of rage still not fixed.
Factions still allied to non factions.
Speedhacking.
Client modifications.(running over bagballs, boxes, hay, and candlebras)
Killing urself so you dont go into stat or lose pnts.(factions)
Ninja tamers. Animal form should be a slot.

I mean hell the other day I was in luna working my dreadmares magery and a GM asked me if i had a basket. Then if i was there. I responded to both. So i know they do exist. I told him to go to yew and do something about the speedhackers since im not afk working my pets. He didnt say anything just closed the chat.

Actually the speedhack utilities came after the introduction to tram.

And scripting was not rampant at all when there was no Tram, in fact there was no resource scripting, just skill macroing. Don't forget you cant script resources if your gonna possibly get pked.

And finally it was a GM who first started duping gold on all the shards and selling it on ebay back in 98/99.

Um.... the game was still really YOUNG yet... they probably were around... just not as blatantly obvious not to mention a large majority of the people playing where on DIAL-UP!

Now they have scripts that will whisk them away the instant a red pops up.... so pull off the rose tinted glasses and give me a break. And again see the reply above.

And it hasn't ended, infact there are many people doing it..... scripting gold farming and anything else you can think of...

yeah, well, they may be unimportant to you, Tazar, but when literally every friday they ONLY talk about the things you like and are interested in, it warrants the question 'what about the rest of us who have literally been begging for combat changes for years now [trapped boxes, combat scripts etc] and seek answers to questions that go ignored week after week after week?'

Wow. Kinda on the attack today arent you. Its a shame that such a well written post is littered with personal attacks and tamer hate. Way to accomplish nothing.
It seems like some of you are overly touchy today? With no word did I belittle other people's playstyles. All I said is that the answers on FoF need some prioritizing. "Tamer hate"! Haha. Good one! Your answers are ironic.

And yes, of course, I did send in my questions. Now take a wild guess how many of them have been answered!

Well Hawkeye it's like this....Fixing the games issues dosent produce income, so if a couple hundred people get frustrated and leave the game, So What...It's nothing compaired to what they will make when YOU and EVERYONE else is forced to buy the new expansion. And it's nothing new, they have done the exact same thing time and time again.

I know pvp is unbalanced and i know the last patch and the one before that and also the one before that was supposed to address pvp issues but Draconi has allready stated nothing will be done untill after the expansion, witch really means nothing will be done except fine tuning the game to make sure YOU and EVERYONE else buy's the expansion.

Sorry to let you down, and i hope you understand now

Heh, the funny thing is, that we are going full circle again with this.

Every time the PvP community waffles about balance issues, the devs say they will address it, but only after they new expansion.

But then what happens? The new expansion not only has bugs, but then also introduces even more PvP balance issues. SO they are forced to work onthe bugs and then possibly the PvP problems introduced from the new expansion, but they never get the the main PvP balance issues.

Then by the time the can get to the "main" PvP balance issues, low and behold its expansion time again...

It has been stated in the past that after mass bannings, they tend to see a spike in new accounts larger than the number of accounts banned. If this is accurate, I would expect the same would likely apply to exploit fixes.

( I think balance questions are a completely separate issue ... but that's a philosophical debate )

The same people that say PVP balance is one publish out...
"Stated by who?"

I've never read any post by any dev saying that a balance for PvP is one publish out. I've read them saying they are trying to fix certain issues in PvP, but never PvP balance.

Because truthfully, there is no way to truly balance PvP. Regardless of what could be done and let's say magically is done, people will always whine and complain.

But regardless, this is all irrelevant to the topic of this thread. This thread is about FoF, not PvP balance issues. So go make another one of your PvP threads to continue the helpless discussion on PvP balance and PvP rants :p

That would be a 'new player' issue.

I still liked it best when Wilki did it.
Wilki: "Most of them come from the boards, either copied exactly how they were written or cleaned up a bit for clarity. Sometimes we do write a Q & A to answer something specific that we want to talk about, though that isn't always the case. In general, we try to pick questions that will be of interest to the greatest number of players".

Indivually emailed questions (perhaps from a compiled list in a Sticky), weekly, from each person that wants an answer might help.

For the "something else" I would suggest reserving that slot for a question from the marginalised individuals in the game.

eg: Chefs seldom have a voice or representation, yet there are many long-standing issues with the skill and profession.. offhand: GM mark has stopped working on the newly-markable stackables.

Granted this isn't a pressing issue for the greater majority of players, but that's precisely why issues such as that tend to go ignored or un-fixed for years. Voicing one such concern per week would go a long way toward tidying up or at least addressing those non-mainstream pursuits that add so much to the unmatched diversity of UO.

My goal with the Five on Friday is for the developers to answer player submitted questions.

Some weeks there are an abundance of questions on a specific topic such as the expansion while other weeks I may get a variety of questions from skills to pvp. As much as I would like to it's difficult to promise a certain format of questions every week and keeping my goal in mind.

Not anymore. Unless you (as the unexperienced Trammie) enters Felucca, which nobody usually will do.
What would happen to the inexperienced new player that has no artifacts, armor, skills, or people they know. Would they stay in a game with no help to even get started.

Will imbuing be an answer to balance in the game. The fact the weapons that are better than any in the game at this point will wear out. Will they be sold to the PVPer with the most gold to feed him over the new player. Or would it help distribute the gold. Who knows it may even bring prices down since everyone can have them.

To me the new player has been the life of the game. I have been in the game for 11 years and never missed a month. I have found that every player in here was new at one time. Don't tell me that they need to work it like Siege. If that was the case everyone would Want to play there.

I can only hope that they would accept me into the closed beta so I can try to make UO/SA a better place for both the new and established players.

Not one of my questions has ever been answered, so I gave up submitting them. Likely the time involved to get a reasonable answer was too much trouble. I know others feel this same frustration.

Deco and SA questions (SA questions have almost all been answered previously) are the easiest to answer I'd wager.

I love this. How about the questions that havent been delt with in years? How about those. I dont care about SA i'll worry about SA when its released flat out. I want to know about the crap in the game now that has been broken for years yet you answer crap about a stool in like 3 different fofs. Just give people one and solve the whining about where is it me cant find it i dont want to look just tell me where it is.

Ive sent in fof questions for over 6+ months i just copy and paste my questions because none are answered. Oddly enough none deal with deco or questions that can be answered here in 3 minutes.

I mean you guys admitted speedhacking was an issue at a townhall what year or two ago...Yet oddly enough still a problem. Client modifications are a joke theres been videos posted here and elsewhere about how they can effect uo. Yet nothing... Least you admitted allowing factions and non factions was a bug yet you allow people to abuse this bug even after you guys posted about it here. Im sure it will get taken care of in about 6+ months right?

I have a question. When is UO going to expand randomization and adventure to traveling the realm in any direction? As much as I love the game it is quite static. Why can't you increase the number of random mini event spawns, secret crevice dungeon entrance, washed up loot, NPC odd limited product sale, decayed trees that open a house spot and the list goes on. Why not expand UO to an explore and wander game vs. a mark and recall game?

i think new players are overwhelmed at millions of gold req for things and that readily available stuff to them cannot compete

After 11 years I have everything I want can get anything I want but choose not to participate in this abomination of an "economy" My vendors have been down for years and my crafters are idle except for my own chars once in awhile.

The community is gone because it cannot function in an item based game

I do not want to cancel all our accounts so I can affor to have someone mow my lawn, so I hope SA can restore some fun. Its the best game ever made but its not fun anymore

I read the page. Outstanding. We share the same ideas. I really don't get why things like this aren't implemented in the game.
I think that who wrote that about the pirate part needs to change a few things. That was talked about long before 2008. As early as Dec. of 2007. Cannon str was open tested before the fall of Magencia at the walls of Luna at 15 min intervals. At the same time the deadly snowballs was.

In KR go to the body sculptor and get the eye patch and short pirate pants right now. Don't forget the tri corner hat when you go.

The brigantine and is a sail design for the galley. The Ketch and Yawl are for the lighter ships only room for 2 mast on the smaller ships, and being lighter are faster. If you look at the KR art for the ships you will see all the stays, shrouds, and sail lines drawn in place right now.

For now I am going to try to shut my big mouth. I am sure others will want me to. They are hard at work getting UO/SA out first.
