...dailies (hampster wheel there too), farming (yawn), and gathering (so fun...oh, no, I am thinking of something else)...
Solely based on this, I don't see how UO is different from WoW.
The hamster wheel is still there for gaining skills, farming is almost necessary to keep up with the current economy if you play casually (at least in my case), and gathering isn't that much more fun either.
The only difference is, if you want to farm something you don't need another 20-40 people to do it with you, that's all (never tried WoW so I'm just saying this based on the posts above).

Again, sorry for helping this thread go off-topic.

Well the reason that it took so long (i think) is partly i am a stealth/tamer/vet/mage so not really doing any damage with spells and the gd was 2 days out of stables after bonding so was no where near fully trained, but it was, is and always will be about the challenge. I enjoy doing it solo because its harder and you have to work out new ways around things, i was so weak i'd get her 2 half heal she would call a satyr and by the time i'd killed it she had healed and took her down to 1/2 again another satyr etc

It is fun though, I cannot wait until I get a crimson drop, then I will try to solo dreadhorn, then the rest. hmmm i wonder can grizzle be solo'ed?

And the other reason I solo, is that I went with two guys who said they had done it many times before, they both ran at satyrs and died in 2 sec's then spammed me to res while it wasn't safe. I tried and was killed, self ressed, ressed them, they ran at satyrs again, and again where killed in 2 secs, sapmmed for res, etc etc was just a mess. I do both still but i like the challenge of doing it solo.

Thanks for the tips as well, the fire fields work brilliant.

Oh and the reason it takes me ages for the rats, well as i said the gd was untrained so was just after skill gains really, but as i said i had ran into someones spawn that had left was up 2 lvl 3 or 4 and i didnt check the latar sowent about killing, and aftre a while notice slimes spawning again, it can take a hell of a long time to kill slimes with a gd.

Grizzle is definitely soloable, tamer and dexer. All of the peerless are.

Heheh. Often the newer/younger player's first time involves a large group with all the healers they could wish for. They assume this means it's easy.

Still, if you get the right people together, group battles work really well. Once I went out into the Weald and collected Dreadhorn keys, ran into an Asian player with the same goal. Once we'd collected them all between us, we both sat by the fairy statue for about an hour, each thinking the other was waiting for their guildmate's to turn up (neither of us spoke the other's language).

(He was going on about waiting for "Asura", a player I knew... in the end I finally translated the word and figured out he was talking about Dreadhorn himself).

Anyway, despite the communication barrier, we had no difficulty in beating the boss between the two of us.

On the other hand, having a player with no idea what they're doing can make things ten times harder. This is especially true in that particular zone, where newbies have a habit of running around with every single "named" monster in the area on their tail (plus about a few million dread spiders).

Oh Just wanted to add, im not against soloing things. I do it alot. What annoys me is when they leave "Bugs" enabling it to be solod with increadible ease!

I mean not really needing to heal your pet in trav til the end, or the ease at which shim is done, the "bug" with paroxy. Its just annoying when they take theses challenges and break them.

My case in point with the vanguards, they were increadibly fun...for the 2hourse or so before they became easy. I made a full suit and the etoile set just of the shields!

Real stories of Travesty, all from the past week:
1. I went to kill Travesty alone with my greater dragon. From the start, when I had no keys, it took an hour and ten minutes to have a dead Travesty.

2. I went with a group of eight people. I collected the keys myself (20 minutes, the yellow one refused to spawn). We lost Travesty an hour and twenty minutes later because the eight people wouldn't follow simple directions and we wound up with wall to wall (literally) ninja, mages, thieves and assassins.

3. I collected the keys with two guildmates, then we collected a fourth person and killed Travesty. The whole process took about 50 minutes and there were no complications. I found out afterward that I was the only one there who had killed Travesty in a group that small.

All three situations were fun, but the point is that alone was nearly as quick as the small group, and much quicker than the large group. And that's the beauty of UO, things you could do alone can also be fun in groups, so we have the option of doing it either way.

On the other side of the same coin, a group of four people can kill Mel (including keying) in less than 20 minutes. Alone it could take over an hour IF the person knows what he's doing. It is for this reason that I suggest going to Fel if you want to try soloing Mel.

And the least challenging of it all was soloing, but take that with a grain of salt.

The group I used to hunt with would have Mel dead before the entrance key disappeared. It was around 8 minutes I believe.

Yes, that's about right... 2 dragons, an archer/mage and a beetle/nightmare combo. 8 minutes.

Plus 12 minutes for keying (kill 3 dryads, wait 3 minutes, repeat 4 times, killing Saliva during a wait).

About 20 minutes total.

We actually used 2 Mage/Tamers with GD's or Cu's and 2 ABC archers with Heavy Crossbows.

I don't know man... if you're really in for the challenge I say go do a Mel with that archer dude again... he is probably a bigger challenge than the boss herself. :D

Discord definitely helps and we use a necro too to mind rot and corpse skin her. If you keep her mana low things go better. Also a necro can animate anything she spawns before she does and turns it on you. You do not need an army in there just two or three well planned chars can do it.

Good luck Soloing Paroxxy the normal way with a tamer.
You read that post wrong. I meant all the peerless are soloable. Not all of them are soloable with a dexer and a tamer.

I've solo'd Griz with a gd/mage/tamer combo.
I've dueted Dreadhorn with 2 gd's/mage/tamer combo's.
I've done Travesty with 3 peeps before, 1 gd/and 3 mage combo.
I've done Mel with 2 gd's/mage/tamer combos.
I've done Proxy in a larger group using my dexer
I've dueted Dark Fathers with dexer & bard or dexer & mage/tamer combo
I still get my asshat handed to me when I try to get Shimmering Keys!
