978ms ping to all servers on LAN?

I am seeing anywhere from 900ms - 1050ms ping on all servers when I log into the UO client on my school's LAN. But, when I ping greatlakes.owo.com (my main shard) in Command Prompt and when I run a tracert I receive a 13ms average (nothing over 14ms).

What gives? My gameplay is ridiculously laggy.. Thanks.

if its to all servers, its just a display bug. If your local shards are that high, then the very distant ones would be much much higher.
did you have a firewall up that asked you to allow or disallow traffic in UO? The time it took you to click allow will cause the ping to skyrocket for that instance.

Well I just connected again to see and I have a 747ms ping on GL (my main shard; typically have about a 14ms ping here). On Formosa, my ping being displayed in the UO client is 943ms.

The only firewall I have in place is Windows Firewall and all UO traffic/ports/applications are added as exceptions. I wasn't having this problem last week, but the main thing that confuses me is this:

My ping in Command Prompt is 14ms to Great Lakes. When I sign into the client it's over 700ms, and when I click GL to actually play the game my lag is as if I had a 700ms ping, not 14ms... weird stuff.

Is anyone else having problems, or could this be a server-wide thing today?

On the server list for me it says Europa 47ms on command promt it says 30ms so who knows.

You said you were on a school LAN. Is this a college dorm? Sometimes in the interest of security, college IT staff will implement firewalls that do weird things to gaming, such as packet inspection, outbound filtering, and such. Also, it may be that you are unlucky enough to have a dorm full of people downloading music/movies and killing available bandwidth. Even with a lack of bandwidth, ping times can still appear low until you start passing some real traffic to the outside, then the times will jack up.

I would suggest you first go to the school's IT department and ask them. You are paying good money, and most of those guys are gamers too, and can relate. Just be polite, dont try to sound like a know-it-all, and we can usually help you out. (I say "we", I havent worked in that capacity in years :p )

Well it's a college network, but I haven't had a problem like this in a long time. Just last week I was online in UO and running around with a 14ms ping. Now, suddenly, it's anywhere from 700ms-900ms. People here play WoW, LoTRO, DAoC, and tons of other games with zero problems-- including Xbox 360 and PS3. So, I know it's not gaming in general that's being limited.

I just ran UOTrace.exe for the heck of it and my results are:

Any ideas? Any devs that can offer some insight?

All connections, no matter how good, can drop a packet every now and again. Especially an internet router that handles millions of requests a minute. This is normal. Also, if you have another computer, or a buddy with a laptop, install UO and connect to the same connection and see if you have problems. This can also be indicative of an infection. If the buddy gets the same symptoms, then you can say it is not your computer that is the problem. Once again, I suggest you talk to the school IT department and see if they are doing anything funny with port redirection. You say WoW, DaoC and other things work well, however, they are using different ports than UO. One possible scenario could also be an application in use by the school that uses the same ports that UO does.

Just my two cents, dont have to listen, however I am a network engineer with 13 years experience in WAN routing and have worked years ago for the IT department at a major university.

On my old WISP I had a similar experience. It ended up to be 2 things. 1. Some clients didn't have a bandwidth control, so they would hog the bandwidth. 2. Over cliented server which led to latency.

Yeah, I sent a message to the IT department with ping request results, tracert logs, UOTrace logs, and the ports used by UO. Should this be enough for them to diagnose the problem? I also included a detailed explanation of the problem.

Since I'm enrolled in a summer semester of on-campus classes and only upperclassmen are on campus, only one housing building is open. But, I did not have this latency problem at all last semester. So basically when more people were on campus from January - May I had no problems, but now that less people are on campus from May - August I'm seeing 1800ms. It must have been something they changed on the network for the one week in May when nobody was on campus between semesters.....?

Ahh, it's driving me nuts. I wanted to launch my site tomorrow (UOLedger.com) but I can simply not launch a UO news site when my latency is peaking at nearly 2000ms. Gotta wait it out.

You don't have a 3rd party software firewall on you computer that has been updated or something that is causing UO to be blocked do you?

Nope, I checked numerous times but the only firewall on my UO-playing computer is Windows Firewall. The network might have something else in place, but I have no third party firewall installed or running.. :cursing:

EDIT: Problem solved :) I contacted our LAN Admin and he created a class on the packet shaper and opened all ports required to get into UO. I'm now playing with no problems! I'm now able to launch up my site today if all continues to go well. WOOT.

Gracias.
