Why do I keep dying?

I could use some help, cos dying is getting a bit expensive.

I seem to be VERY vulnerable to spell casting monsters.

I am at the Cyclops Camp on Ilsh. I'm handling the Cyclops, Ettins, Trolls etc without too much diffculty, but if a Gazer pops up - I die.

Pally Template is Resist 87, Med 84, Focus 94, Anat 83, Parry 82, Sword 80, Tactics 78, Chiv 67, Heal 33 (I'm working on that one).

Str 99, Dex 80 (currently raising), Int 53.

Resists: Phys 70, Fire 42, Cold 33, Poison 50, Energy 31.

What do I need to change to stop being cannon-fodder for magic casters?

fire and energy resist, your suit is badly in need of higher resists for going against magic casters.

Ok, thanks Petra. I'll dig my smith out and try and up those then.

Bingo.

I wouldn't go out in anything less than 50 phys/60 fire/60 energy.
the rest don't matter as much.

Thanks heaps guys. I love these forums!!! TBH without them I would probably be overwhelmed by this game. While the depth is what makes it so attractive, it is rather difficult for beginners.

I agree. There's still things that amaze me after 5 years.

Got that new char on chessy yet? ^^

Okay, this seems a bit better.

Resists: Phys 70, Fire 70, Cold 43, Posion 70, Energy 69

Can't move to Chessy unless my little pally can come with me ;)

Totally. don't worry about the cold, it's the least important of the resists.

This, unless you have fast casting you are going to get mauled by magic. The amount of times i have been paralyse, mana drain, poisoned by monsters is insane!!!

Raise your healing, raise dex to speed up heals and nothing will stand in your path (also, id pick one of focus or med...not both, just my opinion there.)

question mitch..

did you make a macro for "bandage self"?
since you are new, there's kind of a problem with this.
You have to toggle ON the option for the New Targeting System for the "bandy self" macro to work.

something a newb might not know right away.

you missed that he's training resist, those spells are mostly the ones that's good against. A few orange petals and he'll be fine.

No resist spells!

you should probably start dropping Focus and raising Resist.
That helps alot with not getting poisoned and mana drained constantly.

try it out, Focus is a breeze to raise if you want it back.
Resist starts to get really handy at about 70's skill.

edit" Petra beat me to it.!!

Since you have already worked on your resists now it looks like, as well as some other tactics, the only other things you really need to do are:

1. Train healing. Work with someone you KNOW, either through a guild or a friend and train healing. You will set a macro for bandaging your buddy and pretty much in less than 2 hours from where you are now you can hit 80 healing. Another hour or so after that and your healing will be 90 or so. 90 healing is good enough. You will have to make the call whether you want it higher or not.

2. Someone sort of mentioned it already, but you need to get your overall dexterity to 140 in order to make the best use of the internal bandage timer. 140 dexterity = 4 second heals, which = good.

3. I believe RichDC already mentioned it, but try to choose only focus or meditation. Not both. Only mana regen happy mages choose both of those on a template...at times. Me personally, i don't go with either. BUT, you then need gear AND weapons to help take the place of those skills. Which...for a new player is difficult.

I've run a pally dexxer template for a long time. It is a lot of fun. You can either keep resist or use items in place of it. As a new player or not, I recommend resist. Items are still useful at times, but they can cost a lot for a player without many resources.

Arch Magus is really so correct as is Petra. You can start shrugging off poison attempts by Dragon's in the 60's and start nullifying them pretty much altogether once you get into the 70 skill level on resist. The higher the resist you get, the most difficult monsters you will be able to fight with ease.

The worst beasts in the land use countless paralyze/paralyze and any other nasty spell combos you can think. Other than that, get your weapon skill and parry as high as you can afford to.

One thing no one has mentioned so far, you may not be advanced enough for fighting casters yet. If a monster is dead he can't cast on you. I would build up your skills to close to GM in most (90 at least) before going down to visit gazers.

Also be very careful to fight one at a time.

Get a Soul Seeker sword. It's a repond slayer and will help you kill titans and cyclopes quicker.

Make a few friends and travel in groups. Watch their tactics and fight with good team work. This can make even tougher monsters easier if your in groups.

Practice special moves, healing, bandaging, and curing, on lesser targets so you can play your character better. Practice on wraiths so you can learn proper tactics for fighting casters

Look through the forums to see if you can tweak your template to make it more effective.

This.

When fighting groups of casters, pick out the most dangerous and really try to knock his life down quick. All monsters slow to a crawl after 50-75%of their life is gone, and they cast much slower. when fighting them, it's all about fast damage and knocking them out quick.:D

Wow!!! So many people to thank, so little time.

Seriously though, heartfelt thanks to all of you for taking the time to even read my post far less offer your advice.

This stuff is going to be a fantastic help and will add immeasurably to my UO experience

Be sure I will be back with more questions as I've never subscribed to the theory of it's best to learn from your own mistakes - I would much rather learn from the experience of others. It lowers the cost of insurance and I'm running out of bank space with all those Death Robes.

You should be learning from the experience of others AND from your own mistakes. :D

Keep it up, you'll be fine.

Arch, I am using KR client and can't find that option. Any suggestions?

yeah, switch to classic 2D. :dunce: nah, j/k.

If your bandage self is working in KR, then it's fine.

I can't help you with the KR client. :bored: I'm sure it has a bandage self macro in there somewhere.

For bandage self in KR, just set a hotkey for bandage, then set the target for the hotkey to "self".
You can also set the target to last target and target cursor. Just single click on the hot-bar icon for your bandages to set the target.
