Is hiding Difficulty based or can you gain no matter what your wearing?

If its difficulty based anyone have a chart of what i should wear each level?

I'm fairly certain it's not difficulty based, but I haven't had a character with below 80 or so that I was planning to GM for years.

Its difficulty based... not on armor but on npcs and people on screen... you will gain better above 80 with more people on screen..

I know NPCs factor into stealing gains. Never heard of it for hiding.

No hiding is not difficulity based. I've reciently GM'ed hiding twice. It does seem to be a bit faster if you are working stealth as well because when the system does a stealth check it does a passive hiding check at the same time without the 11 second timer.

I would have a macro for hiding and while stealthing, repeatedly hit the button everytime i failed to stealth. I did that walking around Brit, Moonglow, anywhere with lots of people. Also when i was just bored to death, while stealthing, i would repeated just hit that button anyway, or get my cat to lie on it.

I have GM'd hiding once already, and am currently working on a second char I intend to GM. I hide in my house, I have a macro set up for hiding, I just keep hitting it every few seconds while I organize chests, stock vendors, or just talking with friends customers.

Cup of coffee + last skill macro + hammer on macro button = easy gain. Do this in your house, and you won't fail, which will accelerate your skill gain tremendously. No waiting for fails.

I set up a treadmill in my house (two teleport pads in a straight line, and worked stealth at the same time. GMed hiding in no time. This was extra nice because I could eat or watch TV while I sat by my laptop. :)

If you're doing stealth also, a treadmill in your house is the way to go. That's the one thing I miss the most from when I went to a smaller house. No room for a treadmill in the tiny one I'm in now.

Yea, the treadmill works wonders. I had one set up so the stealth check was always right after you step outta the porter (10 spaces 'til a check, right?).

Treadmill is simple enough: You set up two teleporters in a straight line, say one to the north of the other. You then stand between them and slowly start walking towards one... Step on it, get sent to the other... continue walking in the same direction and the process repeats. It's a treadmill.

Remember, the more attempts you make to hide, the more chances you get to gain. Activating stealth (by walking while hidden) resets your skill wait timer down to about three seconds (as opposed to the ten seconds you'd have to wait if you were using hiding on it's own).

Regardless of whether you succeed your stealth check, attempt to re-hide as soon as the skill timer lets you. It's those attempts that make you gain, after all... There's no point in waiting until your next stealth check comes around "naturally" (that'll be quite some time at the higher levels - the amount of steps you can take depends on your skill, it's ten steps at GM).

Lastly, you're best off training in your house (where you will never fail to hide). You can't attempt to stealth unless you successfully hide, so training where hiding can fail is only limiting your check rate (and hence your gain rate).

The actual stealth attempt seems to check your hiding skill too. I have actually gained hiding while stealthing.

Stealth check both hiding and stealth. Also the number of tiles for a check is your skill level/10

so 12 at 120
9 at 90
6 at 60
Etc.

Edit: a good place with alot of NPCs is cove.
