What better way to pay homage to a legendary item than to use 14 charges and then retire it with a single charge left!

You waited 10 years, wait another 3-6 mos. for SA to come out.

THEN use it to craft from non-colored ore, weapons & armor that you can sell to Artificers (or use yourself) to imbue to higher intensities. I quit using any runic sew kits or hammers until SA comes out. If using non-colored raw materials, you can sell/unravel any "rejects" from the runic tool, instead of tossing them on bank floor for others...

Its not making sense the way you describe it .... you can only imbue an item which has less than 5 magic properties. On a 'good' smith with a valorite runic you willw ant to take for shure, that all your items are coming out exceptional. That way all of your items will end up with 5 or 6 properties (damage increase, even from beeing exceptional, counts against the limit for imbueing) and you wont be able to imbue more magic properties onto it.

My point is that the lucky runic owner should use Iron and not colored ingots, thus allowing him to Imbue the items if they fail to be the Uber masterpieces we all wish for ...

The real appeal of Imbuing vs. runic crafting is "you" choose what 5 mods will be on the item, and not being stuck with 6 random properties- and how much of something - you want on your weapon or armor.

I have never had the pleasure of crafting with a valorite hammer but I have burnt through 3 barb kits (using barb hides) , and out of those three I got 2 keepers. I would love to have a Val runic hammer, and would use it myself - BUT I would use Iron ingots so that I had the chioice to imbue or not.

Every Imbued item also is a potential "work in progress" - it can always be modified, mods increased/decreaed/or eliminated and new ones added.
