Its a real shame what has been done with the D&D franchise. Origin trademarked the slogan "We create worlds" and they did, but the creators of D&D did it first and without the worlds THEY built, the games we play today might not exist.

I remember meeting him at an Origins (or was it Gen Con) Convention in Detroit. I played in an event that he was DMing. My character never did get out of the old Come Back Inn

You know, it's been so long ago now, but I swear I remember one of my earliest table top experiences being a run through of the floppy bound Blackmoor from a four by six brown cover book that required using the combined rulesets of Chainmail and Wizard for combat resolution. Were these books the original three book set for OD&D?
That was before the Blue or Grey box edition of Dungeons and Dragons and In Search of the Unknown. Many many hours, many hours, of fun.

Some of you might not know who Dave Arneson is, but he, along side Gary Gygax (who passed away last year), invented D&D. Ultima probably wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for these two guys. I thought it would be appropriate to post this here because of that fact.
So rest in peace and fare thee well.

The crappy plastic dice in the original box sets, were made by a scientific supply company to be "disposable" dice high schools and colleges could order as class aids for Probability & statistics classes. They were never meant to be used long-term by anyone.
IIRC, since they had to buy the dice as sets, that's the reason so many things were written to use certain dice, as to not have to "break up" the dice sets (that came pre-packaged) and throw away any unused types.
When they did the original D&D boxed set, that company got the biggest one-time order it had ever gotten for the dice - then had to increase production as the game caught on. Eventually, they got out of the game dice business as other suppliers (including the first dice-specific companies) came along. I still have a number of 25-30+ year old dice I use in my weekend games (I still play 1st Edition AD&D on Sundays)

Omigods! Someone who remembers the Chainmail rules...
Chainmail was stand-alone, and a precursor to D&D. They were originally intended as miniatures rules, with the roleplay/fantasy tucked in on the side.
Someone stole my copy :-(
This thread is awesome..... My son still plays D&D though they are on whatever new/latest edition it is... I played the original D&D as well as AD&D.... with my Elven Theif/Magic user and his 3 wives... Loved it...
And to make me smile... my son keeps his dice in a Crown Royal bag... like they should be...
Ah those were the days.... summers spent having fun and time spent every weekend and on Holidays playing D&D... Way back before computers and computer games... Back even before console games....

Sorry, I don't mean to hijack a thread, but I'm beginning to feel as though I should smack my gums together more.
This is sad news and marks the end of an era for us "old timer gamers". I started playing D&D back in the early days of Chainmail and Blackmoor.
I ran a D&D campaign for high school friends for 20 years before, one by one, we had families, careers, etc that shifted our lives into different directions.
Most of us took up the hobby of computer online gaming to fill the void of role playing. This made it easier to "turn on and turn off" the game and play at our leisure. Getting our group of 10-15 people together even once a month was getting difficult with real life schedules and responsibilities.
We have alot to be thankful for to have been involved with D&D. I personally want to thank Dave and Gary for what they brought into the world. They have provided millions of hours of enjoyment and friendship to thousands of D&D players and DM's alike.
Warm up those d20's, whip out those character sheets, and carefully thumb thru those worn out books and enjoy as taking your turns peering over the DM screen with your formidable grin at your players.
You will be missed deeply here on earth.

I'm glad to see this guy's death getting publicity. In life he was often overshadowed by Gygax.

Heh, it's interesting. I too come from a very old and tight nit gaming group, but even though some of us have moved apart, we still occasionally game together on weekends thanks to technology. We set up two laptops in the gaming room, and use webcams and skype so that those who can't be there in person can play. It sounds odd, but it works very well. We have one webcam set up on the battleboard and the other set up to see the group and you can switch back and forth between the two. It's really cool.

I started playing d&d in 1977 when it came out in the pamphlets and still have most of my books still and still occasionally play and my dice and my sons die are in crown royal bags still
Old enough to pre-date the introduction of D&D.
I have a few first edition books as well. You had to have them because there was no internet to look stuff up. You had to bookmark pages and such.
I had character creation sheets and dungeons I made myself.
In regards to dice - yes, the D&D ones that shipped were crap but I found a game store that made cool translucent ones that I used to use my money to buy. I'll have to take a pic and post. ;-)

LOL - I still have my dice in a a purple Crown Royal bag as well

I have to admit I never knew much about the quieter partner of the Arneson & Gygax tandem. I fear I always felt a bit upset over how his Monster Manual 2 copyright lawsuit set a precident that put a chill on many who toyed with creating derivative games. *looks around* Well, at least it didn't stop everyone
There are so many interesting stories running around about what happened between them. It's a shame Dave wasn't given the credit he was due sooner.
