The most recent news post was posted before the Shadowlords killed him.So is he dead or alive? it was just posted that he was alive on the most recent news post...
... he's prolly a zombie
So someone Rez Killed him...Talk about a soap opera, lol. He's dead/he's alive/he's dead.![]()
That´s one of the best explanations I´ve ever heard.Well you see, there actually isn't any resurrection, it's really just gating in a confused clone from another parallel shard which has had the same history up to that moment. Big-name NPCs have a tendency to die across the entire multiverse at the same moment so resurrection can't work on them as there are no living versions to snatch![]()
I would not push your luck..........so........
Would a jesus reference here get me banned?
Just to think, the original "He was a royal mage BUT HE'S DEAD NOW" description could have been left intact after all. 8DThe most recent news post was posted before the Shadowlords killed him.
He is dead on every shard.
On shards where the Shadowlords Faction failed, Melissa killed Clainin instead.

The thought did cross my mind.Just to think, the original "He was a royal mage BUT HE'S DEAD NOW" description could have been left intact after all. 8D
I also like this explination... but only because it ends with:Well you see, there actually isn't any resurrection, it's really just gating in a confused clone from another parallel shard which has had the same history up to that moment. Good thing the shards reset ever morning, my wife needs all the clones she can get. That´s one of the best explanations I´ve ever heard.Well you see, there actually isn't any resurrection, it's really just gating in a confused clone from another parallel shard which has had the same history up to that moment. Umh... does anyone know how many shards there are, I may run out of clones.
...oh you mean the movie with Brad Pitt in it, directed by Guy Ritchy? Yes, it is a classic.I also like this explination... but only because it ends with: Snatch
Short version...I'm lost with this story again.
UOguide kinda filled me in.
To just post a memorial on uoherald and not mention the death first, is confusing.
Such a prominent figure like Clainin gets killed? Who's his replacement?
Excellent summary.Short version...
New Haven go BOOM. Clainin in coma.
FoA gets all stabby-stabby on Royal Council, except Casca and Avery.
Avery gets blamed for helping FoA, thrown in dungeon; Council now effectively just Casca.
Crimson Dragons and Shadowlords attack Trammel cities.
New Council forms.
Casca gets elected King by new Council.
Sherry questions Casca's leadership, and Avery's involvement with FoA.
Somebody attacks Clainin as he starts to recover from his Coma.
Casca orders Clainin be escorted out of New Haven to a safe house (kept secret at the time, now learned to be Felucca Trinsic Paladin Isle).
Barriers start to re-form in Trammel, limiting Crimson Dragon capability to attack cities.
Casca calls for adventurers to kill monsters blocking a crystal, which he destroys after the area is safe.
Casca announces that the crystal was helping the Crimson Dragon invasion.
Crimson Dragon charges towards the crowd and taunts them; Casca runs away.
Platinum Dragon in human form warns crowd, transforms into a Platinum, kills/scares off/transports away/somethings the Crimson Dragon.
Platinum Dragon leaves.
Melissa gathers up Shadowlord Faction Members and attacks Clainin's safe house.
After a battle (on some shards, the Shadowlords won; on others, the shadowlords lost, but either way it ended the same), Melissa kills Clainin and blows up the building.
A memorial is held for Clainin.
So... to answer the questions...
- Such a prominent figure like Clainin gets killed?
Yep. I'm guessing Draconi is cleaning up all the loose threads from old lore so he can build a solid, unified storyline that is more closely based off of Ultima Prime lore (but with Crimson and Platinum dragons thrown into the mix).
- Who's his replacement?
There isn't one. He was incapacitated for so long already that if he was going to be replaced, it would've happened already. He was no longer counted as a Council Member as far as the current Leadership is concerned, and certainly wasn't useful as a mage while in the coma. If he thought there was a need for a Royal Mage, Casca would've gotten a new one a while ago (or even the old Council itself, since they were all alive and functioning [in a rather dysfunctional way] for a while with Clainin in a coma).
Blackrock can disrupt the applicability of resurrection? Note to self: keep blackrock away from PKers. For those who're curious why Clainin couldn't just resurrect - Melissa destroyed him, utterly, through the power of blackrock. He became just as mortal as the average citizen of Britannia... and then perished.
You should also know that it's common RP convention that "death" in UO is really "unconsciousness," or "obscure death" (fell down a mine shaft or a canyon, no way to confirm death, have to move on). Not all UO deaths and resurrections are explained this way, but many (at least on LS, and other shards too I believe) are.Excellent summary.
For those who're curious why Clainin couldn't just resurrect - Melissa destroyed him, utterly, through the power of blackrock. He became just as mortal as the average citizen of Britannia... and then perished.
This, however, makes me think that, sooner or later, either he will have to bring back Dawn, or kill her off. Because, like it or not, she's part of UO history.Yep. I'm guessing Draconi is cleaning up all the loose threads from old lore
5) Like many of us, they figured he was dead (take, for example, the jerk who wrote the UO Guide article calling him dead....oh wait, that was me!!), and didn't think to bother. Then he woke up. "He's alive?!?!?!?!? WTF?!?!?!"It's kinda funny that the servants of the Shadowlords had two years to assassinate Clainin while he was incapacitated in bed, and instead waited until he woke up to kill him.
A few possible reasons come to mind:
1) Clainin wasn't dangerous for the Shadowlords while in coma, so they didn't bother having him killed until he woke up
2) The servants of the Shadowlords intentionally waited until Clainin was awake and ready to fight back, in order to demonstrate their power and bring a stronger blow to the morale of the citizens of Britannia
3) Casca wanted Clainin dead, but he couldn't have him murdered while he was in bed or he would have drawn suspicion on himself. So he waited until Clainin woke up and then threw him into Melissa's arms...
4) And of course there is the usual possibility: the Shadowlords fell victim of the typical evil mastermind syndrome and complicated their plan unnecessarily instead of going for the easy solution![]()
No, we didn't kill any of the classic companions - they've simply been absent. As for Dawn? Hmm... It would be rather anticlimatic to just have her die like Clainin.Nice job; thank you Gildar.
I think you're right about this sentence:
This, however, makes me think that, sooner or later, either he will have to bring back Dawn, or kill her off. Because, like it or not, she's part of UO history.
On a related note, has it ever been said definitively if the classic heroes of Ultima lore (Shamino, Duper, etc.) were killed in the Council Massacre, or if they were away for some reason? And if so, where are they are now?
-Galen's player
No, but I'd argue she should be mentioned in some way....At the very least, "every hear of the past, from Dawn to Dupre to Shamino, had been sought, and none could be found....Now, it's up to...." and the remainder of the sentence, of course, is basically the players. No, we didn't kill any of the classic companions - they've simply been absent. As for Dawn? Hmm... It would be rather anticlimatic to just have her die like Clainin.
Shamino hasn't shown up since sometime before LBR so far as I can remember.. kinda makes me wonder just where he's been.On a related note, has it ever been said definitively if the classic heroes of Ultima lore (Shamino, Duper, etc.) were killed in the Council Massacre, or if they were away for some reason? Actually, Shamino was still active in 2002 after LBR. For example, he is mentioned in the Solen scenario fiction as one of the first Britannians to become friend of the hive:Shamino hasn't shown up since sometime before LBR so far as I can remember.. kinda makes me wonder just where he's been.
*stares* OH! Now what are you going to do with that power of blackrock?Excellent summary.

Anyone else notice that I mis-spelled Dupre's name as "Duper" in the post that Crysta replied to?Shamino hasn't shown up since sometime before LBR so far as I can remember.. kinda makes me wonder just where he's been.
