How do you tell the good from the bad?

I see some items go for millions, and I don't understand why. And then I see items that look great that go for a couple thousand. Is there a guide out there that explains how you can tell if you have a good item, or what to look for as far as mods and stats? So far, I understand that hit% lightning and hit% fireball on weapons is good. And if it's a bow, only balanced ones are really worth considering, right? What else?

What is good or bad really depends on what you're doing.

Weapons (since you used them for examples) that are geared for PvP cost a LOT more than weapons geared for PvM.

An example:
You burn a runic hammer on krysses, and get two with very high intensities. The first one has three mods, Hit fireball, hit lower defense and hit chance increase. The second has proportionally the same intensities, but has hit mana leech, hit stamina leech and defense chance increase.

Both of those are very good (and very expensive) weapons, but the first one will get you a lot more gold when you sell it, as it is much better for PvP than the second. On the same vein, if you're playing a samurai-vampire template, you don't even want to look at the first kryss (apart from that you're probably not looking at krysses anyway).

Here's a good guideline for what's good or not:
Bows: Swing speed increase is everything. A bow without SSI, no matter what the other mods are, is only good for imbuing later. Balanced feature is nice, but not mandatory. Hit spell effects often makes the difference between life and death in PvP, but isn't really that good in PvM. Hit mana leech is mandatory to most archers in PvM, but isn't as useful as other mods in PvP. Velocity is less desirable than hit spell effects, but is still nice to have. After you have a bow with swing speed increase and a spell effect, if there's a third feature, I would like that feature to be hit lower defense.

So in short for archery weapons:
Mandatory:
Swing speed increase
Great mods:
Hit spells (except for harm), velocity, balanced, hit lower defense, hit lower attack, hit chance increase
Good mods:
Defense chance increase, hit mana leech, hit stamina leech
Not so good mods:
Hit life leech, resists, hit harm

I'm sure I forgot some mods.

As always, the above information is my opinion, and can differ from everyone else's opinons.

Alright. So, for the most part, mods you want to see on weapons for PVP are spell procs such as lightning and fireball, swing speed increase, and hit chance increase/defense chance increase? And PVM revolves more around leeches. That's going to help me out a lot. Thanks!

For PvM Slayer Weapons and even more Super Slayers and Damage Increase are important too. :)

There is no reasoning behind how people price weapons any more, JUST so you know. There used to be a pricing guide a while back on Atlantic that pretty much governed everything. I found it to be quite accurate frankly.

Nowadays there are people who post prices for 70 million and such but quite frankly a lot of those weapons are garbage.

The best weapon I ever knew had 50 leeches, every single leech along with 50 magic arrow and that guy would get offers of up to 50 million or so for his weapon. Now THAT, was a fair price considering how RARE something like that truly is.

In terms of bows, as long as you have a good mix, some DI, some SSI and depending whether you are PvPing or not, you can consider balanced and some other traits.

Please keep in mind that balanced isn't the be all end all. You can easily setup quick equip macros through UO Assist and well for me?...I hardly ever miss a beat. Balanced bow or not.

Good item for a weapon for PvM =

1. Slayer (depends...basically the major types: elemental, reptile, arachnid, undead, and demon). Probably a few class types I forgot at the moment.
2. DI
3. Mana leech
4. Stamina leech

Anything else is debatable. Balanced, hit spell etc. blah blah...is debatable.

PvP rule of thumb is as you already have mentioned.

Lower requirements can be important if you are going with a lesser STR setup. Additionally, Hit Lower Attack is probably the most underrated mod there is on a weapon. Few people seem to understand it for whatever reason.

Additionally hit lower defense is nice to have on a weapon.

That said, don't go paying millions and millions for weapons that have WEAK stats on them.

Also don't pay for weapons (bows and dexxer weapons) that have -1 on spell casting (SC) and/or don't have DI on them.

Reason being is self explanatory. The reason they are selling them is for that reason.

My rule of thumb for -1 SC stuff is if you have 3/3 casting or better AFTER equipping the weapon then...buy it perhaps.

If no DI on it?...Don't bother. Waste of gold.

What about weapon types? Which ones are good, which ones are bad? I mean, I don't see too many people running around with viking swords, or executioner's axes. So why not? Are they not worth it?

I think most people go for fast weapons.
Yeah sorry thanks for adding that.

Weapon speed is pretty important as well. Unless it is a magical shortbow or something of that nature, SSI is always good to have.

Most people dont run around with viking swords and executioner axes as you put it because...the BASE speed is too slow.

That also said, most people don't pack around a good smith on their account. If you know someone who has a smith or you have some, you can go out of the "traditional" mindset and create some pretty outstanding weapons.

Aside from everything that has been said, most weapons are selected for the specials they can execute. Again...an area where "some" people are weak in. There are many weapons that CAN be of value, but the catch is the stats associated on them and most importantly...the swing speed attached to them.
