Should i reinstall now?!?!?

i been playing and using UOA to do bods. i log out to go to the store. i log back in and that when it got weird. i log back into UO and notice my music is back. i am like HUH so i go into options to change it and UO crashes. i get the following message.

i have a bad feeling i need to reinstall UO. I usaully good a fixing problems but i not even sure where to start on this one. Oh i did clean out my history files and such for IE but that shouldnt have effected UO.

Any suggestion before i reinstall? Thanks

the only thing i can think of is go to that folder and make sure its there if its not you may be able to copy it from another character folder and replace it not sure if that would work or not doesnt hurt to try if you can find no other method
just make back ups of any files you change

Oh wow.. i jsut notice something.. it not going to the desktop folder.. just straight to the Account folder folder. i so missed that until now. that is the problem. hmm now where in the code do i or can i fix that.

I was pretty sure that our character desktop infos were moved to My Documents in a recent patch to take care of problems some users were experiencing with Norton AV products.

That error shows the path as still being in C:\Program Files\... If that is an error from UOAssist, I would recommend trying to uninstall and reinstall it first, before the UO Client. Might save some patching time if that works.

i just caught the no desktop in the file path.

i really dont want to reinstall UO.. tooooo many patches LOL

I think desktop.uos belongs to UO and not UOA.

The devs moved the UO client settings to My Documents for compatibility reasons. Have you not started the 2D client for some time?

Search your My Documents folder to see if your UO desktop folders are there. If so, reboot (in case some parts of UO is still cached in memory) and restart UO.

See if that works first.

Let me search for the post regarding the folder change.

yeah, i was playing yesterday with my sister. i havent use UOA in about a week.

Check my document folder.. it there. some reason it getting misdirected. God only know why.

The new folder should be:

Documents>EA Games>UO>User Data>'account name'>'shard'>'characters'

See if the files are there. If so, the patch moved the files correctly and the client should detect it the next time it starts (reboot first just in case).

If not, it should create new ones.

Also, check you PM.

Edit: Ah, just saw your last post. Good, so the files were moved correctly. Reboot and try again (but read PM first).

Well I've ran a couple of scans and only found some cookies.....They weren't fortune cookies either... So now what......Plz don't say reinstall I hate reinstall. Also my macros have vanish....Ugh!

Hmm...stratics is behaving weirdly and loading extremely slowly for me...

Right back to your issue. If it's starting up properly minus the macros, then it's just the desktop folder that's corrupted, no need to re-install. It's not going to help recover the macro files anyways

Does it still crash when you exit?

Are there files still in "Documents\EA Games\UO\User Data>\<account>\<shard>\<characters>" ? Specifically either macros.txt or macros2d.txt (I'm doing this from memory, so file names might be slightly off).


If so, do this:

1) Exit UO totally

2) Backup (ie copy) the "Documents\EA Games\UO\User Data" folder to somewhere else in case we do something bad

3) Delete the desktop.uos file (and any other files except for macros*.txt)

4) Start UO and see if your macros are back (you will loose the desktop positioning for any spell icons you dragged out, but that's unavoidable)

Let me know if you don't find the files or if it doesn't work.

Sorry, last scan i was run found Virtumonde.. ACK!! J/k had make sure it was gone. Friend had me download another scan to make double sure i am clean. It finishing up. (i have to borrow sis computer. glad we live together)

oh and yes i crash on logout. I was think about deleting that files but little nervious now they moved it

Well poo that idea fail..

i cant figure why it being directed to my account folder in the ultima folder in my programs folder. (okay did that make any sense) It should be directed to the file in my documents.

Are you saying you have deleted the "Documents\EA Games\UO\User Data>\<account>\<shard>\<characters>\desktop.uos" file and it's still crashing when you exit? Macros are still gone? Is there's a macro.txt file in that folder?

Double check "C:\program files\ea games\ultimata online 9th anniversary collection\<account>\<shard>\<char>\" and delete desktop.uos files there too.

If it still doesn't work, let me know what files are are in those folders.

LOL i got ahead of you.. i did that. What is crazy if i look at my macros doc. my macros are prefect.

The desktop part of the path is missing.

If i knew what file or files that info is located, we could fix it but since i have no idea unless it in the Registry (oh god, please not there)

(note, the macro that come up in game are for another char... i think)

Okay both place had... chardata.mui, desktop.uos, macros2d.txt, multicache.dat, skillgrp.mui, and uo.cfg.

all you have done is added a space at the end of your acct# or pw. That is the same error msg you will get. Back space on both Acct name & PW & retype them in, should clear you right up.

I have been having the crashing problem since the patch when I log out but not the error message about a file missing... Just a crash everytime I access the paperdoll and try to log out, use options or make changes to the game window...

I have uninstalled and installed UO so many times its not funny.

I noticed that even though I deleted the EA Games folder in My Documents I still had desktop settings (spells pulled, pack open, etc...).

I was still crashing on logout (or using Options) so I uninstalled everything again, but found that not all my EA Games folders were deleted from Program Files. So... I deleted those, made sure I had no "pieces" left anywhere, did a cleanup and a registry clean.

I reinstalled and still crash every time I try to change my Options in thepaperdoll or log out from the paperdoll. I have tried this with and without UOAssist so I don't think the issue is UOAssist.

There are no extra spaces in my account names or password either.

I'm at a loss.
