Hey all,
I was reading up on Herding because I am bored. Bored enough to make a herder. The info I found says that to use the herding skill you have to use a crook. Is this true? If it is that sucks. If not yeah!
Also can you use herding while hiding/stealthed?
Generally, any info on herding you can give would be GREAT! Especially tactics you know of using the herding skill.
Thanks!

You gotta have a crook equipped. That's all. No macing skill needed if that's what you're thinking.

You can herd while stealthed.

Actually, I am pretty sure you don't need it equipped, just in your pack. You can also stealth/hide while herding.

Yes, just need the crook in your pack so you can double click it. It works great with stealth. When I get bored, I go out and stealth herd stuff in dungeons. Just remember that when you're moving around some of the nasty things you're herding, they do have a chance to reveal you and running away when you have told the stuff to follow you with the crook is a bit hard. :D I've died that way many, many times from greater dragons.

so you can have a creature following you but it can still aggro you?

Yes, unless you're in stealth mode. If it sees you it will attack. It's not like it's tamed, it's just following you.

Yes, I'm in that club as well. Sometimes hiding straight away works, other times it's oOooOooO :D

I use my crook from my pack, mostly while stealthed.

To the OP:

Herding works on all tameable animals, including your own pets. You can't herd animals while someone else is taming them (unless you targetted them before the tame attempt started) and you can't herd other players' pets ;)

You can use herding in a number of ways.

By using a crook on an animal and then targetting yourself, the beast will follow you. This can get a tamed pet to pathfind around a rock etc too, without revealing you if you're hidden. Therefore, very useful when it's not safe to reveal yourself with "all come". You can herd groups of critters and it won't affect your control slots. Critters will continue to follow you if herded, until they're tamed, die or you herd them in a different direction. So a pack of dragons and greater dragons is (if you hadn't guessed) quite a handful!

You can also select targets on the ground or other players and mobs. However, the herded animal will simply walk to the location you targetted and then starts to wander randomly again.

You can use herding when hunting with pets, to position your pet. Say there's a paragon just off screen. Rather than lead the pet while you're stealthing ahead of it, risking a reveal, you can stay back and herd your pet closer to the monster. Then simply call it back to you once the monster has targetted your pet.

My favourite one... to mislead any players trying to reveal you in Fel by herding your pet away from where you're actually standing. Or herd the pet one way while you go another.

Select pets to tame by stealthing up to them and loring, then use herding to move them into position. You can also pin down a beast using herding repeatedly to keep it in the same spot. Say your friend is trying to tame a cu sidhe - you can keep herding it to follow you while it's angry and keep it off his tail.

Even if a critter is attacking, it can be herded. So in the Tokuno champ spawn, I've often herded the hiryu back from my pet when the spawn suddenly increases. You can't stop them from trying to get to your pet, but you can make them move towards the other side of the screen. Naturally other players are often glad when you do that sort of thing!

Hope that helps!

Excellent info thanks!
I looked all over and I cannot find a list of what animals to herd at what skill level.....Is it even difficulty based?
Somebody help!

A couple more notes on herding:

You can't herd tameables that spawned in a dungeon so that they leave the dungeon.

Outside of the Felucca facet, it is considered physical harrassment to lure monsters to other characters for the purpose of getting them killed. (http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1417.) I wouldn't recommend doing it, even while stealthed, if you want to keep your account in good standing.

Best use I have found for a hearding is put animal lore on them. Lore the ones there and only take off to the side the one worth taming.

Will a herded Cu Sidhe follow you out of the Twisted Weald? And will herded animals follow you through gates?

Herded animals will not follow you out teleporters or through gates. You cant remove the cu sidhe from the Weald with it, or dragons from Destard. You'd have to actually them them then release them where you could herd them to where you want them.

Well, last night I decided to see how long it would take to raise up herding from the 30 I bought off an NPC herder. The char I used had about 600 skill points so she definately wasnt optimized for gains. An hour and a half later, she was at 80 herding. I'll see how long it takes to finish it later tonight.

yeah using the taming guide isn't the best. I used a horse from 50 to 55.6 and the gains stopped. Just dead stop. got a gamen and gained off first try. gained like a champ on the gamen from 55.6 to 87.3 then another dead stop. Tried a greater hart for hours with no gain at all so I tamed a Cu and released it in a safe area and the cu brought me to 100 in no time.

quiet curious does herding help besides the luring part, in taming aggressive animals?

Herding can help you to separate the pet you want to tame from the rest of the spawn. Other than that, not that I know of.

Most people are not willing to become a herder because it's use is so limited. That is why some skills work well with it others don't. Stealth you can go deeper than most tamers can, lore them all picking out only the best to even bother with taming. If your going to die you want it to be worth it. If you want a really good beetle for example. Walk down, lore them all, and take only the one worth anything at that time. You take that one and come back later to see it anything is there better. When people tame them the best is not always at the edge.

When they go you take the best of them to the edge peace and tamed. Saves time, because your only there about 10 min. If there is nothing there just come back another day.

Many people just work the edge never going deep where they actually spawn. Only need one per guild for all the tamers to get the best they can find.

Critters will continue to follow you if herded, until they're tamed, die or you herd them in a different direction
They will also stop following if they're peaced (bard), confusion blasted (potion), damaged by aura or area spells, or they aggro or are aggro'd by another person or creature.

To the OP: the 3 basic moves are:

Pin: Herding a creature onto itself will keep it stationary, just mash your last object(crook)/last target(creature) macro. Handy for taming creatures that "anger" such as dragons or cu sidhes, works best if you have a tamer & shepherd working in tandem.

Pull: Herding a creature onto yourself will make it follow indefinitely unless one of the above conditions are met. If you teleport to any part of the same subserver, the animals will bee-line to you if possible. Leave a subserver (eg: exit a dungeon) and the creature will head west. There is no theoretical limit to how many creatures you can pull at once. I have herded all of Dagger Isle's arctic creatures at once, was a tad laggy though.

Push: Herd a creature to anywhere else and it will walk to that spot at NPC-speed. One trick is to "push" it to a spot, then as soon as it begins moving, "pull" it to yourself and it will complete the push destination before returning to you. I've sat at the bank "boomeranging" critters this way and it baffles some people. You can also try pushing, pulling, then pinning before it returns to you to fudge a faster push. Good for positioning your own fighting pet between you and the spawn, or for clumping targets together for barding.

What you can herd: All tameables, and champion spawn "tameables" (even though champ versions aren't tameable). Slimes, rats, wolves, imps, kirin, unicorns, drakes, dragons, etc. The only tameable that can't be herded is the fire steed, even when discorded. I believe that to be a bug as other top-end tameables such as dragons and cu sidhes can be herded at around 60-65 Herding. Herding's extremely easy to gain now since the last skill-gain changes, you don't need fresh targets. Just get yourself some pets (scorpion, gaman, hiryu) and mash away, or go looking for creatures about 10-20 Taming requirement below your Herding skill.

Herding's very useful in that most of PvM and some aspects of PvP are about spawn management. Being able to bring the "mountain to Mohammed" is a powerful thing.
