Hi, anyone know what the difference between spined, horned and barbed leather is? is there a certain level of skill you need as a tailor before you can succesfully make each? Why is the cost between three runics so vast?
This small, innocent question is pages, and pages of data.
Basically, there are 4 types of "leather" - normal, spined, horned, and barbed; in their order of "value" and difficulty to work with. The latter three types add attributes over normal leather, and can be used to "enhance" normal leather items looted off of monsters. The tailor forum has links to elaborate more fully on each leather's use, enhancing and attributes, and skill levels needed.
"Kits" (also known as "runic kits") are rewards from performing certain tasks for the tailor shop NPCs, and add attributes to what ever is made with them, over and above the attributes which are inherent in the leather used. The properties and intensities of these added attributes are subject to a thing known as "the random number generator" (RNG) - which is alternately my best friend, or something I would like to take out behind the wood shed and beat on. Sorry, I digress.
Kits tend to increase in value from spined, horned, to barbed, with barbed being the most valuable, and harder to receive. The number of "rolls" and the "rolls intensity level" on the RNG is what makes kits valuable - barbed gets the most and highest "opportunities" when creating a piece of armor.
When using a runic kit, any leather can be used for making the initial pieces, and there are different preferences for different players. I have known some players to prefer using normal leather and then trying to enhance the pieces they liked from a kit. Most prefer to use barbed leather with their barbed kits, because barbed leather starts out with the highest "base resists".
I recommend reading the tailor forum, and if you decide to make a tailor, making friends there. My wife enjoys tailoring, and has become quit wealthy in game pursuing this play style. Of course, having a slave to procure her leather hasn't hurt.
