I want UO to have a WHO 'Banhammer' + UOvWHO re:RMT item sales

Well, I feel like I started to hijack an official announcement, so here's another thread to ponder thoughts in relation to its title
... After following that link, I'm reminded of the nice 'banhammer' image on that page.
Maybe 16K out of several hundred thousand accounts isn't huge, but it is significant and does serve a purpose by showing some potential cheaters that they run a risk if they indulge.
A few reminders like that, perhaps monthly/bimonthly, perhaps on the auto patch screen, could also do UO some good, imho.
Like: 'XXX accounts burninated last month (banned for cheating the UO community)'
Next the thought was posed:
I wonder why gold selling is a bannable offence in War but not in UO.
To which I replied:
- Primarily because the creator of WHO has been steadfastly against real money transactions & UO has always allowed it.
& more questions began to arise...

We know it has been legal to sell items/gold for money outside of UO for the past 11 years.

Here is why it is illegal / cheating to do the same in WHO. From its EULA:
B. SELLING OF ITEMS AND OBJECTS

YOU MAY NOT TRANSFER, SELL OR AUCTION, OR OFFER TO TRANSFER, SELL OR AUCTION, OR BUY OR ACCEPT ANY OFFER TO TRANSFER, SELL OR AUCTION, ANY GAME CONTENT, INCLUDING (WITHOUT LIMITATION) CHARACTERS, CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES, ITEMS, CURRENCY, AND OBJECTS, OTHER THAN THROUGH A PERMITTED TRANSFER OF RIGHTS TO ACCESS AND USE AN ENTIRE ACCOUNT STRICTLY IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TERMS OF THE EUALA GOVERNING TRANSFERS OF ACCOUNT RIGHTS, NOR MAY YOU ENCOURAGE OR INDUCE ANY OTHER GAME PLAYER TO PARTICIPATE IN SUCH A PROHIBITED TRANSACTION. THE BUYING, SELLING, OR AUCTIONING OF CHARACTERS, CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES, ITEMS, CURRENCY, OR OBJECTS WHETHER THROUGH ONLINE AUCTIONS (FOR EXAMPLE EBAY), NEWSGROUPS OR POSTINGS ON MESSAGE BOARDS, AND/OR ANY OFFER OR ATTEMPT TO DO SO, CONSTITUTES A VIOLATION OF THIS EUALA AS WELL AS THE WARHAMMER ONLINE RULES OF CONDUCT. IN ADDITION TO VIOLATING THE EUALA AND THE RULES, SELLING AND BUYING OF INDIVIDUAL CHARACTERS, CHARACTER ATTRIBUTES, ITEMS, OBJECTS AND/OR CURRENCY CONSTITUTE AN UNAUTHORIZED MODIFICATION OF THE DATA COMPRISING THE ACCOUNTS INVOLVED IN THE TRANSACTION, AN UNAUTHORIZED MODIFICATION OF PROPRIETARY GAME CONTENT, AN UNAUTHORIZED USE OF THE SYSTEM, AND VIOLATES MYTHIC'S INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS. MOREOVER, ENGAGING IN CONDUCT PROHIBITED BY THIS SECTION MAY ALSO CONSTITUTE MISAPPROPRIATION, AND/OR TORTIOUS INTERFERENCE WITH OUR BUSINESS AND/OR CONTRACTS, FALSE DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN, ENDORSEMENT OR SPONSORSHIP OF SUCH TRAFFICKING, AND TARNISHMENT OF THE GOODWILL IN THE WARHAMMER ONLINE NAME.
- Surely it has worked marvelously and they have stopped people from freely trading items that others consider to have an inherent value; just as WoW has succeeded in doing, I bet...
(They should have embraced & profited from reality, and worried about serious and controllable forms of cheating in-game, rather than force their honest players to suffer while the dishonest cheat away and profit, imnsho)

I just thought I'd take this discussion elsewhere so we don't bog down the original official announcement anymore.

The main thing I would like to see is what I quoted myself saying at the top of this post :)

Hi AesSedai,

Agreed, it would be cool to see a banhammer on the UOHerald.

Just wanted to mention that... referring to WAR as WHO may not endear your idea to the powers that be though. Just sayin'.

For simply selling gold? No thanks. RMT sales are an out of game occurance and while can be corrolated to expliting, duping, and scripting, are not the CAUSE of those activities.

I would be and am 100% AGAINST banning people JUST for selling gold. Instead ban people for exploiting, duping and scripting, the REAL problems plaguing the game.

Sorry to butt in, but from my understanding, selling gold for real life cash is technically against ultima's TOS.

"With the exception of the sale of in-game items for in-game items or services, you may not market, promote or advertise anything, or make any other form of solicitation."

More information can be found in the following link, where someone was recently banned for doing just that.

But regarding your original quote. I wholely agree. I would love to see a banhammer reminder (other than one burning house. One burning house just isn't quite enough if you ask me). ;)

It can be called WAR or WHO, i have heard it called both, War Hammer Online, or WAR, which I quit because of the lack fo content once level 40 is reached

It is a violation of the TOS to advertise (as defined above) *inside the game* for out-of-game services. This is not a restriction on out-of-game services.

Why do you care what people do outside of the game? This is a ridiculous thread because items will always besold outside the game. Always.

I agree ban in game advertising 100%.

I even posted on getting rid of books and runes as ways for players to advertise their sites.

As for what people do outside the game. Its nobodies business.

Besides. TONS AND TONS AND TONS of gold and items are sold in every MMO. Geez are you blind?

BAN IN GAME advertising.

So all those books on the ground at luna and by the moongates are in violation?

The problem with the books and runes is that they can be used for legit ingame marketing as well.

I do know that a book when used will generally append the name of the first person who uses it (which can then be used to track down the writer), but this can lead to problems as well.

Not an easy answer at the moment.

But I'd like to append to what I posted that it would NOT bother me one bit if in the course of banning exploters/dupers/scriptors that it ended up putting certain gold sellers out of business. I'd rather see the companies and enterprises run by exploiters get shut down, but I want it done for the RIGHT reason... and that is because they are exploiting, not because they are selling. If that shuts everyone down, then so be it, if it allows newer people to begin a new market based on legitimate game practices, then that would be the absolute best outcome.

Yes they can be used for legit reasons. Thats way paid accounts can use them.

Temp accounts cant. And they need to attach a tag that lets DEVS know what account dropped the book.

A tag in this case is a good thing. People also drop sexually explicit stuff too.

I see nothing wrong of tagging accounts to books and runes.
