I Need A Sensei

Howdy all…

I’ve been away from UO for 3+ years and just came back a few weeks ago. I stumbled on the Thief forum and have become engrossed. I’ve read dozens of posts from http://uothief.com/

It all seems so damn exciting!!!

My only foray into stealing was back in the day when I was running 3 accounts, I had a thief on one, and I used to camp the Deceit Bone Knight wall and pluck items out of people’s backpacks. Best thing I ever snagged was a Katana of Vanquishing. Ha!

I have a character with the following template, that I never play, and I think she would be a really great start for a thief…

Ninjitsu 100
Fencing 100
Tactics 100
Hiding 100
Stealth 100
Healing 100
Anatomy 100

Anyone have any suggestions on where to take her form here?
Obviously Stealing and Snooping, but what about adding resisting spells?

It seems one skill that you don’t see on thief templates is Resisting Spells. In the high danger PvP environment where you will have Legendary Mages casting spells on you; isn’t Resisting Spells a necessity?

I so want to get involved in the dark world of high crime
Who here plays on Baja and has the patience to teach an old noob the ropes?

Carry a 30 tinker trapped box and some apples.. you won't need resist

Well, answer this:
Do you want your thief to be able to PvP?
If yes, you can drop hiding and stealth, or ninja and stealth for stealing and snooping. If you want resist, then just drop ninja, hiding, and stealth. You will want healing and anatomy if you want to PvP.

If no, drop fencing and tactics for stealing and snooping.

You don't need resist, but it really does help. I have GM resist on my thief and I am proud of it. I like not having to carry a trap box to break a simple para. It also helps for resist poison spells and some others as well. If you don't want to PvP, in addition to dropping stealing and snooping, you could drop ninja for it. I don't want to touch healing and anatomy since it seems like a nice addition :)

I would suggest that you, get your'e hands on alot of soulstones/fragments. That way you don't loose tactics, if you decide to swap it for lets say snooping?
And you can swap template as needed. Fx on my bush-woman, i got all weapon skills except archery on soulstones.

The reason i suggest this is because, what works for me, might not work for you.

It depends on the template.. think of what kind of thief you want to be first.

Best advice so far.

I will say this though, you don't need tactics for infectious strike, and you don't need tactics for shadow strike. You could stone it off for poisoning right off and have two of the best weapons for a thief available.

Get caught on foot against a good mage team (or even a couple mages with any other temp) and you'll wish you had high resist. Assuming you're on prodo.

Stick to hopping on an ethy and using a last object macro (or UO-A) with a pop box and you'll be fine, otherwise.

Sweeney - Thanks for the trapped box and apple reminder. I've been gone for too long.

Viper09 - I want to steal stuff from player characters, so doesn't that make you have to PvP? Or do some people just snatch and run and never worry about fighting back? - Never really thought of that. *ponders*

Kaio - Soulstones is a great idea. That will allow me to juggle skills around and see what works best for me. A+ Kaio :D (I have 11 unclaimed vet rewards, I just can't bring my self to take a single one)

Nexus - I have enjoyed your posts on http://uothief.com/

So this is the template I have worked up so far tell me if it's insane...

Base - (With Arties & bonuses)
Snooping 90 - 100 (+10) Got a burglar's bandanna for 500gp on Friday
Stealing 90 - 120 (+30)
Hiding 100 - 100
Stealth 90 - 120 (+30)
Ninjitsu 120 - 120 (Do I need 120 Ninjitsu?)
Fencing 100 - 120 (+20) Sometimes
Poisoning 100 - 100
Magery 30 - 60 (+30)

Totals 720 - 840

No Takers for a Sensei on Baja? :sad3:

*Edit* Where is the best place to purchase Snooping and Stealing to start?

Some thieves do steal from player characters and just run. Actually, a lot do.

I use to be a PvP Thief, mage thief more specifically. After a while I decided to give a pure-thief template, (just stealing and no combat skills except wrestling).

Being a pure thief is fun. Having stealth and hiding makes snooping really easy.

When I ask about combat PvP, how serious of a PvPer do you want to be on this character? Fencing with poisoning, but no tactics will work decently on some people. But to be really effective I'd suggest finding a way to add in tactics. Hit hard with poison and hit hard with weapon, a thief from hell :D

Personally, I never understand why bother with a combat skill with no tactics. If you are going to take a skill, make it affective. But that's just me.

Best place to buy bot snooping and stealing is from the Thieves Guildmaster. They'll teach a bit more than a normal Thief NPC.

as far as the template....

I'd lower poisoning to 80, you'll still have a 80% chance to inflict Lethal Poison and I've not failed to apply it at that skill level yet.

Since your running Prodo I'd also lower both Stealing and Ninjitsu by 15 and pick up a Ring and Bracelet with the skills at +15 one of each with some FC/FCR or extra resists and run Bandana, jewels, and Shadow Dancer Leggings. It's not a big deal to tote a few regs or some arcane gear around so that's not a big issue really, and you can dump the 50 points you save into Magery for a natural 80 and get one of the +15 books running around to boost it to 95 for less fizzles if for some reason your casting higher circle spells.

You'll want as high a Ninjitsu as you can get, because even at 120 you don't get a 100% chance at wolf form, this is your main escape mode really, it's small and hard to target because your move quickly in it.

Other than that those differences I mentioned it's pretty much identical to what I'm working on with the thief I'm building (still building) on Atlantic I only have 710 skill points to work in those so I'm having to run lower in some skills to compensate.

If you like the stuff I've been putting on UOThief, click my siggy it's a site I've started for my own special project, I'll be doing some non-episode stuff, along with some Episodes that Chad is going to mirror on UOThief, there that you might find entertaining as well. I'm starting a tour of sorts to all the North American Servers and that's where I'll be archiving this Big adventure since right now I'm expecting it to fully take close to 2 years.

Let me know when you get to Baja and we can tear it up :gun:
Hopefully I'll have mad skillz by then.
I'm not telling anyone where I'm going until the first episode for a new shard shows up, that's part of the fun. Though I am going to try and establish a branch of THIEF on each shard without one, someone will be appointed the leader of the guild before I go to transfer off.
