[UO Herald] 11th Year Collection of Items

The stupid part about the EMs stems from American lawsuits where MMO game players VOLUNTEERED to do various things within their MMOs and then filed lawsuits about not getting fair pay and overtime etc.
Sigh, yeah, it's pretty dumb. Wanting to get paid minimum wage for volunteering to contribute to their MMO sommunity...

Classic case of abusing the justice system.

Well, if you are talking about the EM events, the Japanese shards really got shafted. No cool items like, Ithilisis' Breast Plate, Lt sash etc etc, take a look at the stickies in the rares forum to see what other shards got.

However, they do have a very strong community, and supportive GMs that will setup moongates and decorate towns when they organize fairs (complete with stalls for players to sell their wares), and stages where they stage plays. And when they organize events, they tend to do it across all the Japanese shards. Their new year event falls into this category.

Note I said the Japanese shards, not the Korean shards, things were a bit dodgy in Arirang and Balhae for a while.

What I am saying is that events have always been shard based. It kinda sucks though. I understand the logistics issue and problems with people not agreeing with having certain events on their shards. Just hope the new batch of EMs will have more cohesiveness and try to organize more of their events across all shards. Esp holidays that are celebrated across the globe like New Year's day.
I wasn't, in particular, talking about the EM Events as in the cool items, but I guess that is fair enough. And I suppose some of what I am talking about is EM Event related. If you visit a Japanese shard they are so incredibly beautifully decorated with lots of cool things. Then you visit, say my home shard of LS and it's so blah. Why?

But that's really not what I was referring to. Why do the Japanese shards get for instance the New Year items like the wooden cow and we don't? Because they were celebrating their holiday. Okay I get that.

But on that vein of thought, why don't we get something exclusive to the US say a special event with nifty cool items for our Independence Day that NO OTHER shard gets? Because that's not nice and mean spirited to the other shards. So I guess what I am fumbling around to say is why do certain shards get certain things just for their country where others like the US and European don't?

I love UO and am rather proud of the fact that I have played continuously for 11+ years. I have supported UO through all the changes, when LOTS of my friends left and tried very seriously to get me to follow them. However, I am beginning to feel VERY slighted and my attitude is beginning to stink towards certain aspects of UO because of it and I don't like that.

I bet one of them was the person that sued McDonald's for having hot coffee....

A cup of coffee hot enough to cost $11,000 in skin grafts to repair the burns, I would point out.
Heh, the guy should have been smart enough to realize what could happen if it spilled when he decided to put it between his legs instead of in a cup holder. I'd be willing to bet he invested in one of those 1$ cup holders you can buy at the local parts store if his car didn't already have one.

They had already settled out of court with 700 other people hospitalized with burns at that point and had already done internal studies that concluded it was being served dangerously hot.

As for EA volunteers, no matter what the letter of the law is, I feel having a commercial venture dependent on unpaid volunteer labor is an unhealthy position to be in.

(but this is all ancient history :bdh: )

You may be right, however, those volunteers VOLUNTEERED to do what they did in a volunteer position. Because they did not abide by their agreement they ruined it for everyone else.

I was one of those counselors who loved doing it for the sheer joy of helping others. They ruined it for me. When I got the letter from the attorney handling the lawsuit asking me to become a party to it, I sent a letter back telling him in not very nice words what I thought about the people who did this and that I would in no way EVER be a part of that lawsuit.

When people give their word and sign an agreement they should abide by it. If they decided it wasn't their thing they could have quit and not made such a mess of it for everyone else who stood by their agreement!

I suspect it's because the GMs on the US shards have lost alot of their enthusiasm along the way, or got the axe as part of EA US's cost cutting measures :(

With enough manpower to only respond to pages after a couple of hours, I doubt they would risk spending time to decorate the banks to the ire of the players.

I remember when the GMs for each shard would have wonderful decorations for their shards. Like the companions halls. In fact, LS had the best decors! I was so jealous!

The good news is that if the Britain bank decor contest is any sign of things to come, this will be rectified, so take heart Aboo! :)

I agree, esp for global holidays! In fact, I don't even mind if they bring the shinto thingies to the other shards if they don't have the resources to come up with different stuff. I don't mind learning about other cultures, just say that it's a cultural exchange thingy to prevent diehard rednecks from complaining about being forced to celebrate New Year like the Japanese.

Also, I think if they run events on one shard, they should try to run the same events on all other shards too.

I have played UO for 11+ years too. It's not perfect. The devs and GMs are not perfect either. And truth be told, I HAVE tried other MMOs, like EQ and Lineage. When Diablo II was released, I took a long break from UO (I just login to refresh houses). Besides that, I regularly play other games. ATM, I am playing Fallout 3. All I can say is, none of them even comes close to UO. I always come back. It comes darn close to being perfect IMHO.

That aside, I understand why you feel slighted. I just want to explain that it's not a simple case of Japanese shards are now the favorites and EA is trying to curry favor with the Japanese players at the expense of the US shards. Or the Europeans shards. Or the Korean shards. Or the Taiwan shard. Or the Aussie shard. Or even Siege (yeah yeah, Siege players got shafted too, but hey, it's an advanced shard where players that wanted things to be harder chose to play :lick:).

Every shard I mentioned has their own valid reasons to feel slighted too at one point or another. And similarly felt as if they are a unloved step child compared to the US shards.

But it does no good to begrudge others on getting better things or doing better and let yourself feel miserable. I believe it's healthier to focus that energy more positively to improve the situation (wow, I sound like those shady empower yourself gurus huh?).

Harlequin,

You have a very good attitude, I applaud you for it. I don't necessarily agree with everything you said, but I understand what you are trying to get across. Thanks for taking the time to explain so thoroughly.

Hmmm...speaking of New Year, the Chinese New Year just went by recently too (Lunar new year used by the Chinese and Indians has a different new year's day)... So that's 2 events owed so far, and I'm counting! Mwuahahahahaha! 2 tokens 2 tokens! Gimme gimme gimme!

Heh heh. I wish the big muffin and wooden cow were on the other shards. They're kinda silly (and I see NO reason why the muffin shouldn't be added to cooking or a variation of it), but I like them. As it is, I collected them on the Asian shards, but have no intention of paying to move them to Origin.

Thanks!

I sometimes get ahead of myself and get incoherent. Esp when my mind thinks of something and my fingers aren't fast enough to catch up :p I am happy you didn't take offense :)

I left out saying that by focusing positively, I meant making suggestions to the devs on how to improve the situation, how we think it would be better, and how to best handle similar situations in the future etc

And I am very sure you would have done the same if your grandchildren came up to you with similar issues with their siblings :D

I'm a Libra and I tend to think things through as to whether I think they are fair. When I feel they are unfair then my red-haired temper (as my husband refers to it) flairs up. This was one of those instances I suppose.

You do seem to have a positive outlook, especially on UO and I will try to follow your example.

As for my grandchildren, you are right. I am considered the peacemaker in our family, whether it be with the kids and their siblings, the grandkids and their siblings, the cousins or even the grandkids and their parents.

Thanks for the positive posts. UO is an awesome game and although my experience outside of UO is limited (I played EQ for a short while, tried out LOTR - hated it and do occasionally play Guild Wars for a break) there is nothing to compare to it.

*sympathies*

(What would have been nice was if they had a way to incorporate some of that role into the game mechanics - for example, I believe DoaC has a system where someone can offer to be an advisor and others can then page for advice, essentially taking a lot of the "how do I?" or "is this odd?" questions off the GMs, which if understand it correctly was the original motivation for the program)

There were a great many of us who did it for the same reason I did, my sister Devil_Woman was one. I met soooooo many nice people in the Counselor program that just wanted to make a difference in UO. It still angers me that a small handful not only ruined it for those of us who enjoyed being a Counselor, but also ruined it for those players in game that needed the Counselors.

I wish there was a way to bring it back. The Counselor program gave UO a badly needed service. A great many calls could be helped by the Counselor and didn't need to take up a GMs time.

But I guess this is actually off topic so I'll hush, for now. :D

Your hubby hasn't lived with a Gemini :D *hides post from the wife*

What? You mean I am less positive on non UO related stuff? Heh, just pulling your leg, praises make my head feel wonderfully light and fluffy
