What Is Up With The Lag Today?

Is it just me or is everyone lagging worse than usual today?

It even seems to be getting worse as the day winds down...

I don't think it's Comcast. I've got AT&T/SBC and I can't take more than 5 steps without locking up for 3-4 seconds. I tried filling Bods earlier and it took me 5 minutes to fill 3 Bods. Something has to be up on the EA end because I never lag. Even when everyone else was lagging badly the past few months I was still running just fine. It's gotten to the point today where I'm just going to finish stocking my vendors and call it a night.

I couldn't even have a conversation with a friend earlier. It took 10 seconds or more for the text to appear on screen.

On pac last night I experienced a deadly lag spike but I am running fine today nothing out of the ordinary.

Ive been suffering from poor connection for at least 2 weeks now. Gotten to the point where i stock vendors maybe chop some wood but i just simply cant play the game.

The other night myself and a friend were comparing packet loss and it was bad for both of us.

Whats also odd i remember month or so ago only routing through 7 - 8 servers. recently im routing through 20! whats with that?!? Seems to keep hopping about london somewhere before getting to EA's routers!

Just out of curiosity; for those who lag, what is your average transfer rate in kbps? Not in uo, but simply your raw transfer rate.

I have run many of the diff DSL tests, all the tests have come back (done the Ca from Vt loop) in the 2800+ kbps down & 720+ kbps up. That's on Verizon/Fairpoint 3megx768 DSL package

I am on cox premium high speed w/ speedboost. I have average on 12000 to 15000kpbs to LA, CA. Perfect connection most of the time but today I am getting an average of 15% packet loss (this is very bad) and 50ish ping to sonoma. Normally I have average of 28 ms ping and zero packet loss.

Not going to be bothered with pictures, however, I get 14 different hops all pinging under 40... However, when I go through ae-33-89.car3.Washington1.Level3.net I get 100% packet loss on 18 pings hehe

I was at MOA last night. They had a secret word thing, well i lagged up bad. And of course when i finally unlagged, i see oh they just did the secret word. So missed out on chance for 1mil gold.

Ahhhhh the lag.....

this issue has been coming up on these boards every two weeks now since the debacle in November

and with little exception, EA has not responded to the complaints and concerns, despite the fact they get information from the player base.

I'm afraid this will be an on going issue for some time.

I normally don't exerience lag that couldn't be fixed by simply restarting the computer, but last night it was pretty bad and over half the people in the guild I'm in was also exeriencing lag (restarting computer didn't help). It seemed like everyone that was lagging was using the same internet provider, eventhough we lived in different areas of the country, and those that weren't having problems had different internet providers. The lag did seem to clear-up later (around mid-night to early morning).

EA really needs to have a word with ALTER.NET about that gateway into the EA system. It's ALTER.NET's responsibility to fix it, but it won't get fixed unless EA complains about it.

Also, a LOT of people having trouble on the 27th & 28th, were getting weather issues - the internet connectivity of the midwestern US took a beating from the ice storms. I live a good 50-100 miles south of the main areas in KY that were hit by the storms, and was without the internet for the last 2 days, because my cable provider's link upstream went through the area, and a combination of power outages and damaged fiber optics cut the cable company's entire KY userbase (and parts of 3 other states) off from the net, and made their VOIP service hit and miss (worked half the time for in-state calls, completely dead at other times).

Ironically, when the net went down, I was actually in the middle of my reply to post #8 in this thread, after giving up on playing UO for the night (I was having 20-25% packet loss from the point my trace hit the north-central KY/southern IN region).

100% packet loss is not packet loss. In many cases, "border routers", which are also called "Edge Routers" do not respond to ICMP, because it can be used to create "Ping Floods" or Denial of Service (DOS) attacks. These routers denote the "Edge" or "Border" of a particular Network. With that feature turned off, it can mess up standard trace routing and ping tests.

Basara is correct about the Ice Storms.

I live in Oklahoma, and we had a bunch of ice and some snow this week...finally got to take my car for a spin yesterday, first day this week I felt confident driving out there in the mess, hehe.

My Internet and power stayed up the entire week, but in 2007, we weren't so lucky...no power for 9 days. I know there have been reports of problems like this in other areas during this storm too.

I'm having the same issue still.

Some players are not effected. Trace UO always shows its the same hop , about 2 hops prior to reaching the server. It comes in goes all day long.


1-5 second lag spikes.
