No, you cannot steal any containers whatsoever at all anymore.
And no, insured items or blessed items do not have to be in the main container to stay with you upon death.
Well, I had 14 soul stone fragment tokens on me that I was going to sell, but the seller wasn't available at the time, so I took a trip to Blood Dungeon and met up with a paragon Balron. I had the tokens in a bag so that they weren't messing up my backpack. And, when the balron killed me, he looted it. I wasn't able to kill the balron, so I logged out, defeated. I have no idea if anyone was able to loot that bag when the paragon was finally killed.
This was about 2 years ago when it happened, no idea if things have changed. But I NEVER put insured/blessed items inside a container in my backpack anymore.

*nods* I lost a couple of blessed items like that too a couple years ago (although not on that scale!), but it would appear that things have changed.
I've had a couple of characters die while they were carrying a bag of blank rune books and blank runes while out and about copying rune books. Upon being resurrected, the rune books that were in the bag showed up in the character's main backpack and the runes and the bag they were in were still on the character's corpse.
Had that happen in the past aswell, i wasnt thinking monster looting you i was thinking player. If i fighting monsters that will loot i always carry a couple of things that are really heavy and have everything like bandies pots in small stacks as monsters seem to loot the heaviest thing.
There is still a bug with Insured items.
Make sure you have GOLD in bank to cover the insurance upon death and DO NOT rely on it taking the ammount from your cheques.
Sometimes if you have cheques but no gold in your bankbox it wont keep hold of your insured items and they drop into your corpse to decay unless you get back in time.

i can only confirm that one ... same with spellbooks
also at the last holiday trading frenzy and the invaded cities i died plenty times trying to get to a save place. When i was ressed the previous years x mas gifts where in my main pack and the gift boxes they where in before where on my corpse

This was fixed more recently, at least in the last few years. It used to be that if you put blessed/insured items in a bag and you died, that bag would be left on your corpse. Now the items are removed from the bag when you die and stay with you but the bag remains on the corpse. I'm not sure how many levels nested it will check for blessed items though.
