On Sunday afternoon January 23rd 2000 I bought my first Copy of Ultima Online. I brought it home and my wife Loaded it for me. It took almost 2 hours for it to load, and the loading process was funny, as it had many different people in different stages of the Game.

I remember staying up until 3:00 am and than needing to get up and start my NEW Job on Monday 1-24-00. I am still at the same NEW Job, and except for a little time off, I am stil playing. Not sure how many people can remember the exact day that thier addiction began, I guess I'm either strang or just lucky.

DO I miss the old days, Yes and No. I am very thankfull that I started playing before the Tram /Fel split, as I can agree and disagree with those who say "The old Days were Better" and I am glad that I am playing Now as I can agree and disagree with this who say "The NEW UO is Better"

The reason that I feel UO is a Wonderful game, is that people can do what they want when they want. Yes there are cheaters, and yes there are unfair advantages, but in the long run, You didn't lose your Real Life House, or Family, you didn't get Hurt In RL. All that happened was that yuou played a game and it didn't go the way you wanted. Tomorrow is another day....

I wish all of you Luck and success in what every you do while Playing UO.

Peace be with all of You My U-Hall Friends and Family

I think I loaded UO up for the first time in 2001. A buddy of mine was telling me about how you could become what ever profession you wanted. He then sent me a link to PK-HQ. ROFL...I was hooked and had to get an account for myself after reading that forum for a couple of hours...la

I started a few months before you, (Nov 99) and one of the things I noticed is that the lines between those that love the Fel/Tram split and those that hate it, at least among those that can form an educated opinion, are mainly the difference in very early day players and ones like us who played within the last year or so before the Split.

Trammel probably saved UO on the long term, I don't know if UO would have survived if a non-pvp environment hadn't been introduced. Newer more graphically pleasing games were hitting the market and with them came that difference.

How cool to remember your log in day *smiles*
When you view UO as a hobby you enjoy with others and not the center of life it is so much more enjoyable. It's been a fun and sometimes frustrating evolution but I love it all the same! This July will be 7 yrs for me.

:) good to see you, Caesar!

I'll have my nine years ingame this June, tho my account reads, right now, 106 months due to that number juggling they do with account age.... we were here a bit earlier than that, tho, sometime in March, on an invitation from OSI

it was a truly terrifying land for me at the time and now it feels like it's always been home

You didn't play in the 90's. you are a newbie :lick:
Does it count that I watched my Friend play from 8-99 till I bought my own on 1-23-00?

I just never had the time and then I saw that you could collect stuff, and be a warrior and have 10 wolves fight for you, and tame a Dragon, etc......

So I finally gave in. Oh well if me missing the the 90's by 23 days makes me a NEWBIE, then I wear that Badge with Honor!!!!!!! hehe

Peace be with You Spree

Yea I remember when I first started playing it was on a DIAL UP phone line, and I never new but we were charged for every call after so many made. Like $.25 cents or $.50 for every call after 100 in a month.

Well for those of you who have never used a DIAL UP or AOL, in early 2000 you got dropped about 10 times an hour, or so it seemed. Well we got our phone bill after my first month of playing and the AOL bill and let’s just say my Wife was very surprised.

We soon got DSL and the rest is history. Oh well, as the saying goes, “Those were the Good Old Days”

Peace be with You Babble

I remember my first time... *clears throat* my first UO time you naughty people :D

It was launch day in October 97... my wife and I had been dating about a year at that point. Me and some guys from work had been watching the development of UO so we were ready to go. I was PKd in Britian almost in front of Lord British's castle within a few hours.

I met some great people back then and find I compare every MMORPG I test/play to UO. I have come and gone over the years, but UO and the friends I have made thanks to UO will always hold a special place in me ol' heart!

Have a great weekend - Schuyler

Launch day was in September wasn't it?

I remember watching a friends' older brother play Ultima Online in alpha. He got the CD in the mail and seemed very excited to try it out. He popped it in, explained the premise of the game while it installed, and I watched him play it for the first time. I got hooked immediately, playing for a few minutes here and there when he'd let me. Begged my parents to pre-order it at EBGames and I remember waiting in line and picking it up the day it got in the store. I spent the rest of the day installing it and starting my miner. After breaks off and on, still here today.

Well now here is what the UO Wiki has to says...

Ultima Online (UO) is a graphical massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), released on September 25, 1997,[1] by Origin Systems. It was instrumental to the development of the genre, and is still running today. The game is played online, in a fantasy setting similar to that of the other Ultima games that preceded it.

Ultima Online: Charter Edition (September 30, 1997) was available to pre-order from Origin Systems at the launch of Ultima Online and in small quantities alongside the standard retail box. It included a signed lithograph of the Ultima Online artwork by the Hilderbrandt brothers, a pewter pin badge bearing the Ultima Online logo and the box was signed by Richard Garriott. The Charter Edition also included the cloth map which was also a feature of the standard box.
I have this version of the game and I know I ordered it and waited for delivery, so I most likely was not in world until the 1st of October.

See... I told you I am wrong more often than not :D

Logged in early December 1998... I was 15 years old! Man I couldn't wait to play! I pored over that nice thick manual.. over.. and over... and over! Then I bought the strategy guide that had all maps.. can't remember who made it.

Now I didn't play as much as you guys... I was on and off... playing EQ, WoW, LOTRO, and trying every other MMO out there (still play LOTRO & WOW) -- but I finally came back to play my "first" MMO :)

My only wish: That my account would be credited for the full time I've had the account... instead of having to be ACTIVE the whole time. Oh well :)

Congrats

We missed the beta on purpose. It was crazy buggy. We started playing so long ago we baked bread for a living. I guess our first job was selling hides for 3 gold each. They'd only buy so many hides a day from a player so it was hard.

I can´t remember the exact day when I started playing uo, but it was in november ´97.
Back then I didn´t have an account, nor did I have internet...but my boyfriend had! *grins*
He showed me the game.. explained to me how to move and such thingies, and then he had lost me to my first char (Sir Gallahad...lol). Well on some weekends he went out with his friends, and I think he left the most happy girlfriend (referring to leaving the gf alone) playing uo till the early morning.
God damn, his parents were that pissed when they got their internet bill! *laughs*
Well, when our relationship broke up some years later, I couldn´t play uo anymore (couldn´t afford internet back then), so I had to make a break till 2003.
The first thing I bought along with my internet connection, was Ultima online ;) It felt awesome to finally have my own account!

Despite the tons of changes that happened, I still love this game!
I think I´m one of the ppl that are here to stay till they shut the servers down - may that day never happen..

We started playing Autumn 2k, we bullied our youngest son into letting us have a character each on his account. We got our own at the beginning of December that year.
Before that only those with a darn good income could afford to play online games. No such thing as 'toll free' in UK.
Then they introduced special rates for internet, but with a 2 hour cut-off.

March '00 was when i first logged in. Had played it a few times on a friends account and got hooked on it. I've had about 3.5 years where i never played because of school and other MMORPG's I've tried, but EA have always managed to get me to take my money> they must be doing something right because I usually hate computer games.

and Smokin, I know it used to but i dont know if EA changed it when they took over.

I started playing UO in beta... when I saw a RL friend playing it: I was like, let me play... fell in love immediately.

I call BS on that Trammel saved UO on the long haul crap. UO was doing fine without it and there are so many emulations of pre-tram with server populations that rival this one.

Trammel never had the long-term going for it. People complete their chars, collect all the items they want, fight all the monsters in the game and get bored. It's why powerhour was blamed for the quick player turn-over, when really... it was Trammel and getting to the end-game so fast that did.

Trammies need a constant infusion of new content in order to remain entertained. PvP is all about the end-game... hell, it is the end-game.

That is what the long haul is and has always been about. It's why Blizzards WOW has soooo much damn content. Anyone who gets to the end before the next addition can attest that its boring.

my 2 cents.

**disclaimer**

In no way am I implying that Trammel style of play shouldn't be a part of UO or even one of it's foci. But claiming it saved anything is ridiculous...

Oct 99.... I was killed by a Great Hart my first day. :( Then learned about looting rights the next. I miss the days of Lizard invasions in Brit. I actually was lost in the woods outside of Vesper and paged a GM, what happened next blows me away today but back then I took it for granted, a GM appeared. Not only did he appear, he ran with me to vesper to show me the way back to town. Amazing......

i remember the exact day in Dec. 1999. i came in from work & my brother had come over and was loading this game into my computer & said i got you this for your birthday! my friends & i need you to join us in fighting for the good of humanity. he showed me how to make characters, how to walk and the bank. He then took me to Britian tailor shop, showed me the basics of tailoring, buy cotton, make thread, weave and sew. He then said sit here and make fancy shirts (to make money) until i get home and come get you.
He didnt however tell me how to read the map, or what was north, south, east or west. He finally came online & took me out of the tailor shop and asked me to follow him to Trinsic. He had been playing for a while & didnt stick to the roads. we cut thru the forest on the way. Well, it didnt take long until we got seperated (as i went running & screaming like the girl i am) when we were attacked by some player reds, i was promptly killed and spent several days as a ghost trying to figure out where is Britian. mostly because i was running in circles, and he couldnt come back over for a few days. he couldnt help me online as he didnt know where i had run to. i finally went in one direction until i found a road & followed it back to Britain. the rest is history and 9 years later am still playing.
Congrats on you making 9 years!

Ahh yeah. I remember when I first started playing. I played the UO made archers template. Which included fletching. I was an archer who made his own bows. It was nice since GM made weapons were actually something nice. He was my main character.
BTW this was around 2000. No trammel yet.

I remember enjoying chopping trees by myself for some reason. No UOA, no scripting, just me, an axe, and lots of wood, (lol).

I actually did PvP on this guy too. All in GM plate armor, which was good back then. And as most know, archers SUCKED back then. You HAD to stay still for your arrow to hit. I remember PvPing outside a house. I manage to kill someone while the doors were opened. His friend basically said this:
"You got killed by an archer?!"

lol.

For the record: I still suck on my archer in PvP :p

9 years ago (give or take a month) I setup UO, it was just after got bought my first house and got broadband access. I had about 34 dozen friends that played (ok mabey 3 or 4) all computer geeks. At the time I worked the computer help desk taking trouble calls (tech support today), what a horible job. These guys would go on and on at work about what they did in game the night before, I wanted in.

There have been lots of good times over the years, not so many bad. Have taken some time off here and there but never left. I think i'm having as good of a time now as i've ever had.

I loaded UO the last day of September 1997. The store where I bought my games knew me by name because I pestered then constantly about when a new Origin/Ultima game would come out. When UO came out they called me to tell me about it and held me a copy. I bought it the day they called me about it and immediately went home and installed it. However, I was so unsure of whether I would like an online Ultima game compared to the stand alone ones that I loved, that I didn't make my account until a week later, right before I was going to Las Vegas to see my son compete in the R/C TOC.

Even after making my account I didn't actually start playing UO other than just to log in, walk around Minoc (where I was born) and look around until the middle of October. I was hooked and have played ever since, never taking a break from UO other then for vacations, etc.

Das ist SEHR nett!!!

(That is VERY nice!!)

I logged into UO for the first time sometime during the Beta, in the summer of 1997. I was manager at a pretty cool place that "Played Games for a Living". We taught people to fly WWII aircraft, Jets and do FPS in these amazing pods, that had full HOTAS controls and voice comms with "Mission Control" and the other people you were flying or fighting with.

I guess because of the exposure in the Video Game market, the business was asked to help Beta UO. We had a T-1 in that business. In 1997. It was wild.

We would often close the facility down at 11 PM, and then at midnight, my wife and I (and often many of the folks I worked with) would watch the chest open, and go play until about 4:30 or 5 AM, when they shut down the servers.

We went to Brit GY all the time at server down, and did a lot of exploring. We made friends that I still know today, 11 + years later.

It is a wonderful game, and concept. I don't like everything about the game, either then, or today, but for me, it is definitely a game I don't see myself NOT playing, unless EA/Mythic shut down our server.

Feb 1 2000 my sons,12 and 14, came home with a copy they bought from a mate that accidently had ordered twice. I was totally against it as we had to pay per minute. They insisted and should pay they said. I was totally clueless about all comp gaming so I red on the box it was for 18 years and older .. Hmm.. I decided to keep an eye at them so they did not spoil for the older players.. they needed help with the language anyways.

For two months I red stratics and translated and helped out with spelling, running forth and back to the kitchen. "Mum!" is this the right spelling?...what does he say? They started 2 chars each and april 1 2000, totally addicted, I got the 5th slot. I had never been near a comp exept from dusting it .. My poor Mim double clicked everything and got the door in her face all the time, ate ppls decorations and relabled their runes where she was friended, got PKed while mining and spoked to NPCs.. We got terrible bills for years as we lived far out in the forest..

Im still enjoying most things. Its not like being newly addicted , but thats how things work. Ill be here as long as they let me. So far my longest break was 3 days in hospital!:blushing:

December 1997: Penelope was born in Trinsic, Pacific Shard. She still lives there. One of my characters still has their original clothes. Doesn't time pass quickly?
Even though my characters are old they tend to 'fly under the radar' in Fel - except when caught out by a random encounter (e.g. Dark Sith in Moonglow this week!).I still love this game but find it sad when old homes fall. In the last few weeks 2 houses that have been in game since '98 fell. I am glad to see the little house outside Trinsic main gate and Carnifex's house outside Trinsic are still there - not many remain.

October 2002. A new account creation code off a friend's UO:LBR disc.

My first character was on Napa Valley and he has since been transferred to Europa where he belongs.

I had 4 months of 'old-but-not-as-old-as-UO:R' UO before AoS came crashing onto the scene.

I remember playing on dial-up when it cut you off after 2 hours and reconnecting to find my character's corpse slumped at the feet of a cow I'd been trying to kill for leather!

*Looks back on memory lane* I remember watching over my parents and grandfathers shoulders watching them play. (grandfather later went on to EQ) I was told, I couldnt play until AFTER I learned to read better. Needless to say...*grins* This was...'97-98 ish.

First In-Game memory...Crafting wooden shields under West Trinsic Gate and watching the reds swarm any blue that went out.

Left soon after '01. Losing cable speed internet....*shudder*

Came back late 06 early 07 ish. Didn't know about resists...

Got my strength up to 100, got a npc plate armor suit and halberd. Went to Fel Yew...Attacked the first red I saw, and promptly saw grey. Hehe.

Oh! And Who can forget the color wars on test center?

I like this thread. *nods* I will elaborate a bit more tomorrow on my origins. I am feeling a bit off tonight. My attention span is short.

I first logged in April 2000, and yes, I do still feel like a newb often. I'd played in WorldsAway for 5 years, then a friend there said to try UO. I held off for a couple months because "I don't like medivial stuff and I don't want to kill things". Finally tried it one day and loved everything about UO. I spent so long lumberjacking those first weeks that I started looking at RL trees and wondering how many logs they would produce.

One of my most exciting exciting nights was that first house placement night. I'd borrowed enough gold to buy a cabin and was thrilled to actually put it down at Pacific Yew moongate with all the telestorming and dozens of peeps around. A few days later repeated the luck in Drach and my two cabins are still there amid all the more interesting customized houses.

These 9 years have gone so swiftly but been so much fun. I can't wait to see how UO will grow in the next 11. Enjoy our game!

July, 2001 - Dail up for years.

My best RL friend kept telling me, there is this game you should go buy, you have to try it. I kept telling her okok I will.... Then we went to a renaissance faire one weekend and she shoved the game in my hand and said LOAD IT already. Finally after a month of nagging I loaded it and have been completely hooked ever since!

She and 2 of her guild mates lived in a large tower near Skara and taught me how to play. So in the first week or so, I never left the tower unless i was with them. I remember being so scared of that large spider that kept shadowing me as I walked through the tower. lmao

I wish I'd known how to take screenshots when I first started playing XD

I would have some pretty epic Post-Telestorm and Connection Lost shots.
