He sold the rights to his "child". He's a dead beat, and it doesn't matter what has happend since he left. It's his fault what happend, happend. If he wouldn't have sold out, the game could still be his...but at the time, I suppose the money was too good to say no to...la

While it would be cool, keep in mind Richard Garriot didn't have much to do in the design of UO. It was his design conceptually, but the actual game was designed by Raph Koster (you can see the similarities with the MUD he previously worked on, LegendMUD).

I'd like to be a dead beat who started a game series in the 80's which is still running and around today.... and rich, and still a big well recognized name in an industry.

You seem to have a funny idea of what constitutes a dead beat. Perhaps you are much more impressive?

The only reason I would like to see a UO rendered completely in 1st or 3rd person true 3D is for the immersion.

I would never, ever, want to see UO turned into a WoW or EQ clone. It's already gone too far in that direction in my opinion. But there are still elements of UO that remain in tact...like having the ability to customize your character. There are no levels. There is no top. There is only what you want to do.

Many days, I log into to UO, and just visit places I have not seen. I have been playing this game for over 11 years now (since the Beta) and believe it or not, there are still new things and places to see. It's not always about fighting monsters, or PvP, or crafting, or collecting things...sometimes its just about being in the world we all have spent so many years getting attached to. I am a shop-a-holic, guilty, I love shopping...but not because I really want to own all that crap...mostly because I like to see whats out there. I meet many people while out shopping. To me, its a fun part of the game.

You don't get that kind of experience out of what I like to call A+B=C games like WoW.

Well, spiel over...back on the original topic :)
I don't "begrudge" anyone for wishing for prettier graphics necessarily. I just think that it HAS to be treated, with the way the game market is, as a tradeoff. If you want beautiful graphics in an MMO, get ready for the kids and powergamers. And once you have those, get ready for the MMO management company to start kowtowing to any change that will keep them... more, godly , hard to get loot and gear.... more quests... more linear progress, harder to reach the top, and a larger chasm between start and "finish" of a character. Those are the things that keep ADHD graphics and action and competition driven younger gamers paying the subscription fees longer. That is why every single major MMO follows precisely the same formula.

So, a choice between UO2 going for homely graphics but keeping the same style and flavor and non-linear open endedness, or a beautiful top of the line 3d state of the art graphics engine... I'll take the first, hands down. If I wanted the second I would just play some other game.

You do realize this is fairly standard, yes? You think the three college dropouts who started Diablo are still at Blizzard? Heck Blizzard doesn't directly control WOW anymore, it's under Vivendi now.

Totally normal. Blaming Richard Garriot for what EA did to UO, or how they managed it, or what they did or didn't do with it, after Richard Garriot left EA, is rather myopic. His other work pretty much stands... most of us that played Ultima prior to UO would love to see someone who makes games like those come back into the industry. If you'd prefer more of the same, then by all means, just buy EA and Blizzard products and blame other people for things you don't like about them. I'm sure that will spur lots of game development creativity. ;)

I agree. Some of my friends play WoW, and many of them point to the graphics as the reason. I say no thanks. If I want fancy graphics, I can watch a Pixar movie.

But, I do not think that fancy graphics are necessarily the reason games like WoW are the way they are. I think you can have non-linear, open ended game play, and the graphics. Just no one has done it yet.

I do keep hearing a lot about Darkfall, but I am not putting too much stock into that. I will wait and see if it survives the first six months before even considering it.

I agree absolutely you can be both. I think though that it would probably require the original "vision" team that designs MMO to stick with it and not just sell it off to some server farm or management company or board room. Because once that happens, it becomes ALL about marketing, retention, and strategies to make the game more addictive long-term, and for goals to be more delayed. And you get Everquest, or WOW, in a new set of graphics.

In other words, someone would have to be in charge, and stay in charge, who cares about the direction of the game, and not JUST about attracting as many transient casual gamers and addicting them for as long as possible with all sorts of godly gear requiring 600 hours to farm.

If the game meant that much to him...he wouldn't have sold it.

What is your point? Your reputation as a troll seems well earned. Why are we even discussing theories about his level of emotional attachment to UO? Who cares? Ultima as a franchise has been a huge part of his career. The rest of whatever point you're making is irrelevant.

..........Or the devs could just do it right and have good graphics AND the UO feel... But then, we'd need a brand new dev team to get anything done right.

If an artist paints a masterpiece and sells the original, I don't think anyone would begrudge him for it, or accuse him of not "loving" his work. Even if he worked on the same painting for 10 solid years, you wouldn't expect him to keep it. Game designing is no different.

The love that went into the work is why we respect the artist (or the game designer), not some childish attachment they may hold to it.

Of course in THEORY Garriott could have "stuck" with UO and continued to develop it throughout it's active life, and that would have been pretty cool, but to be fair after 16 years or so I imagine he was pretty bored of developing Ultima games.

The reason I posted this (and what I think is interesting) is that perhaps he may one day consider going back to what he did best - creating Ultima games. I don't think for one moment he should be hated on for wanting to try something else for a bit.

I wouldn't blame the team, I'm sure the folks working on UO are quite talented. The problem with UO is twofold:

1. It was the first game of this scale. So much was unknown, there were no "best practices" as for as MMOs go. The game has suffered from poor architecture from the beginning because of this. There's only so much you can do when building on a shaky foundation!

2. Lack of resources. No matter how talented a development group, they can't fix issues or implement nice, solid features when EA pulls them off a project and directs them to work on something else.

My opinion is that Darkfall will go the way of Shadowbane, sadly. There is one thing that every game since UO is missing, and why they will never capture that feel: The typical MMO is first and foremost are designed as a game, with a world tacked on and created to house the game. UO on the other hand was conceived as a virtual world in which people could inhabit. Instead of creating a game mechanic and then building a shell around it, they created a world and gave people tools to interact with it. In the end, it makes the world live and breathe like no other MMO, and I don't think Darkfall will be any different from the masses when it comes to that.

PS: Thanks for helping me (Aristohl) tame that Rune Beetle last weekend, he's been busy terrorizing earth elementals and all kinds of other baddies since :)

Excellent! Glad I could help!

You guys took off before I made a complete arse of myself and died to my own tames, not once...but TWICE! :D

I felt rather silly after that!
