bonded beetle looses his mind, while off line...

Anybody offer any explanation for this?

Bonded beetle, full of new (excellent !) barbed leather armor. Worth milions, at least in my mind. Several nice items from from an IDOC... all inside the beetle. I log out in my house, come back the next afternoon. Beetle is wild in my house, retame, nothing on the beetle....

SOrt of the worst thing I have experienced. I know a beetle can go wild, but not -after- i log out in my own house. It instantly logs, right? I want my stuff back... still poor after all those years. will take months to recover...

Is this just my poor understanding of the game mechanics, bad luck, or a bug? No chance ever getting my items back, i am sure...

Your beetle cannot stable while items are in it's pack. . therefore it also cannot auto-stable. Once it goes wild, the pack contents are deleted.

Empty your beetle's pack before you log out.

the two things i don't get though, are first that this beetle has been with me for some time now. I left a couple of bags on him with not much in it and they never dissapeared. I have logged out and back in the next day all the time without loosing my stuff.

Secondly, even if the beetle should have been empty, how the hell could it go wild -after- i log out? I guess the only explanation for this one is that the moment I log out, it went wild and I missed the event because it was returned to my client after it cut off.... would be extremely unlucky...

(and the third-- if I re tame it, why is my stuff gone? this is the most puzzeling actually. if it didn't stable, and remained in my house, it is still the same beetle. I should be able to retame and not have to loose my stuff, right?)

the thing i should have done, i think, is mount the beetle...

If you log out with a pack animal that has items in it's bags.. it will not log out with you. You might have been lucky before this, but that is the way it works. When a pack animal goes wild, it will drop a bag to the ground with the items it is carrying. That is why it no longer had its items on it.

I'm really sorry for your loss, it really sucks :(

Yup, shoulda been riding the beetle =)

If your beetle has items on it, you can log out while mounted on it, and it will be fine - but if you log out without mounting it, it goes wild a few hours later (not sure how long) and when it goes wild, it drops whatever it was carrying (in a pack on the floor) which decays as a normal item dropped does =)

Have done it myself too, such a bummer when it happens! My beetle killed me when I logged back in too =P

Oh, it goes wild after you log out, because *it* doesn't log out with you if you aren't on it, and it has stuff in its pack

This goes back to the days when people would leave tamed animals in their houses, like sheep or bears, something like, for training or farming purposes.

The going-wild thing was added to prevent people from storing more animals than they could fit in their stables. If I recall correctly. It's been a LONG time. (I remember walking by houses and seeing parry-trainer polar bears in houses. Those were the days.)

I lost a loaded blue beetle once while smithing in town before the daily server save. I hopped on my beetle and logged off in my house about 15 minutes prior to normal server downtime. Of course, this was the day the server save didn't work and reverted back half an hour. My beetle was wild and everything gone, including my +30 blacksmith talisman... *sniff*

*wonders how I never knew about this*

Well, that explains why my lumberjack lost his beetle when I didn't bother logging in after a client crash. Fortunately I've always been paranoid about leaving anything valuable in a beetle.

Yup it has been said already. Had you mounted the pack animal before logging out, it would have logged out with you. Because the pack animal was in the world when you logged out, it remained in the world when you were gone and eventually went wild from neglect in your absence. All of the items the pack animal held immediately went into a pack on the floor in your house as soon as the animal went wild. Those items either decayed or were destroyed during server maintenance. The fact that the pack animal did not get destroyed as well is just a matter of luck.

Now what did you learn?

If you do idocs it won't take months to recover. Sorry this happened. I am paranoid about issuing commands to my pets. When I log in I hop off my mount and hit my "all follow me" macro, if I'm online for a while I do it again, and then again before I log. I never log off with a pack animal that has stuff on it. I was on a shard I didn't have a home on and was so paranoid ab out having to do this one (x-ferred to buy rubble and had to use packies to hold it all) that I logged in another account to make sure that the packies had logged out with me. Paranoia, it's your friend! :p

Indeed. I did something even less bright than logging out with a Pack Animal next to me.

I recalled to my house, ON my beetle, which had on entire collection of all Tokuno Arties, including all Original Dyes, and enough other items to make it 125 total.

I recalled, and went to a different window right then, for some other reason...

I didn't go back to my UO window right away. A scorpion or something killed me, and my beetle, right in front of my house, and I lost everything.

When I did click back on my screen, it was OOooooOoo and no stuff.

That wasn't UO's fault. It was mine. I should have taken my little butt in the house, instead of standing outside defenseless, on a Crafter.

I find it is a lot easier to stay positive if I start with myself first, when I have a challenge with something, rather than trying to blame someone or something outside of myself for my screw ups.

Works for me, anyway. :)
