Since my thief is still in training, I was wondering if you could get gains while stealing from monsters. Has anyone gotten a gain from it yet or could a Dev possibly deny or confirm that it's possible? I've been at it for a while now with 64 Stealing, and while successfully making quite a few steals, have yet to see any gains.

It's been so long since I worked on my thief. I think she is stuck at 102.2 so I guess I can't really help you. But good luck!

i not totally sure about this but i think the biggest prob with gains while stealing from monsters would come from the weight issue. i mean at 64 you have to steal something that weighs at least 6 stones to give a possible gain. so that may be an issue considering the monster would have to have alot of gold on it and your thief would have to steal at least the 6 stone amount for a gain. dunno if snooping the pack would help to get an actual item as the mark for the theft. seems i read someplace that stealing from monsters is not a snoop first action. just a random steal from all the items in the things pack.

again, i'm not 100% sure about it, its just my own theory judging from how stealing gains are supposed to work.

i just tried stealing on my wife's thief who is at 78, and i couldnt really locate a good candidate that wouldnt take her head off in 2 hits. hehe. she is kinda wimpy tho. cant try it on mine cuz he is already maxed. sorry i couldnt be more help.

I was stealing from Centaurs, which have roughly 300ish gold on them, which is what I was getting the majority of the time, yet no gains from any of the steals. I would think that at that low of a skill level that I'd have gotten at least 1 gain.

Aye, Kensai I think you're right, you'd have the issue of not being able to control the weight of the item you nicked, so it wouldn't always trigger a gain like you would stealing the right weight concistently from a pack horse. That said, I'd try it anyway and see how it goes.

Of course, if you join the thieves guild and snoop players, you could get gains through stealing the right level from them. But you'd get death robes too :D

And yes, I did that, a lot!

Why claim and load a pack llama when there's a ready supply of goods already set up in an easily accessible container? *blinks innocently*

I started a new thief yesterday and got a gain off of stealing from one of the undead in new haven. This was before I bought up the skill. I suspect you need to steal an item of the proper weight to get a shot at a gain. At 33ish+ skill I did the 150 gold coin pile off of a packy till I noticed my new character bone helmet weighed 3 stones, and remembered that they took out the old skill gain system of having to cycle through targets. Now if only this account had UOA, it gets really old counting to ten each time, tho mostly I was just casting magic reflection three times in row between attempts. :p

There should be timers for this kind of stuff!

Kensai and Wenchkin are right, you have to steal in weight approximate 1/10 of your skill. So if your at 64ish, you would be looking at stealing something that weighs 6 stones or apporimately 300gold.

Edit:
Another thing I just thought of. I'm not sure it's still the case, but it used to be you had to Target steal to gain, not random which it would be in Monster Stealing.

Now that could be the reason I'm not gaining. I don't have Snooping, so I'm having to just target the monster. The weight was right at 300ish gold each time, but there's no way for me to target. I guess I'm going to have to decide whether I want to just keep using jewels & items until my skill finally gets high enough, or if I want to get bored out of my skull with a packy in Fel.

Decisions, decisions....

You cannot snoop any monsters (save barry and neira maybe a few other human types like brigands) so you cannot make a targeted steal, may not be your bag, but go to fel and steal from players, MUCH more fun!! and that way you can still gain stealing 1stone items (seems that the proper use of the stealing skill will gain whereas silly monster stealing wont!!woot!!!)

I suppose I could always go to Yew gate and steal the Tamers pots and bandages....:D

I think ¥§hàdòw¥ has a point with the targetted stealing too. I think from memory (like 9 years lol) the random steals would help you for the lowest level gains, but after a wee while you need targets.

The way I trained was a with few buddies and our pack horses to train either at Skara bank or WBB (Fel side!), training alone did my head in. May account for the craziness now as it happens :D

Go to the walls of Brit Castle. All the barrels there have armor and weapons in them of a spread of weights. In the last few months they nerfed those a bit to have lil more and better spread of items. Wonder for years why those longswords with diffferent look and can't do nothing with where doing in the game. 1 stone weight I guess for those that can't buy up the skill I guess.

Know if you have another account with mule miner.........you get a packhorse and recycle bags. Friend the packy between your thief and miner mule. Fill the bags with the stolen recyclable items. Standing above the forge/anvil location from above smith shop lets you recycle iron (in your house they can be located the floor above and still be used. good for those castles and keeps with little usable space). With a jeweled out thief at 120 can get about 1100 ingots and 200 leather recycling per lap. At 116 natural I get 1-3 gains per lap off items in my weight gain zone. The lighter stuff fills time and resource keg between gains timer.

You'll find a few items with different weights but same article. One is the ringmail sleeves. Some spawns there are there for that good weight spread. Also good to have the mule there on a second computer to rez. Find yourself dieing often use Ctrl Shift to see if someone is shadowing you below spamming guards. Some players have nothing better to do and going on a smoke break stretches their attention span.
