What has been UO's Best and Worst changes in your opinion.

This is so funny, seeing everyone say the worst thing for UO was Pub 16 and AOS. Those are probably the only reason most of us still play. I played before 16, just before trammel came out....like 1 month. If Pub 16 and AOS never happened, would you honestly still want to play the same damn thing for 10 plus years? I think not. Every single person in the game would have a Silver Indesructable Supremely Accurate Katana of Vanquishing, killing liche Lords in Deceit. There would be no diversity between skills, and disputes over taming and this template is so much stronger than that template. These changes are what makes UO the best damn MMO out there. I for one am with the Development team and the changes and additions they make to the game.

BEST CHANGE: EVERYTHING, keeping UO the best damn MMO out there!

WORST CHANGE: Cant think of one!
I couldn't say what would have happened over the last 10 years, since I did quit right after Trammel came out. You see, back then I was a big fan of the game as it was. After Trammel came out, 90% of my friends moved to Trammel and I never saw them again after I decided that Trammel was boring (remember, that was then). Felucca was no longer interesting to me because the people I used to defend had all moved to where they didn't need defenders any more.

I had a friend, early on in UO (who also quit with Trammel), who always said, "Everyone wants to be a king, and nobody wants to be the citizen." His comments were about the roleplaying community, but it fit UO as a whole perfectly. It fit any MMORPG for that matter.

So while for the 90% of my friends, the creation of Trammel was a good thing, for me and the other 10% of my friends, it was game breaking. And if I survived up to Pub 16 and AoS, they would have been just as game breaking to my play style back then.

I admit to being in the minority, even though many posters here seem to agree with me, and from a business perspective all of those changes were good changes (yes, even AoS). But for me, they were the worst things they could have done to UO.

First of let me say i love uo!!!

Started back in second age and had an absolute whale of a time wandering the wilderness and surviving ogre attacks(not always :)), i left for a long time after the introduction of doom and i think the reason and therefore what i would consider the worst change was patch 16, it wasnt that i didnt like patch 16 as such, it was more that everything i had worked hard to get became overnight worthless!!and i had to basically start all over again. It was just that there was no apparant thought gone into buffing up what was already there and they just decided to wipe the slate and start over as such.

However having said that...i would say the best change was patch 16 :p.

I know it sounds wierd but altho it was the worst thing to me i believe it was the best thing for the game, it allowed alot more diversity and style became important as much as useability, you would often see people wearing exactly the same armour with only cloaks and sashs to distinguish people, now there is so much diversity its fantastic...barely anyone uses the same armour or weaps(cept arties).

So although it destroyed my game playing experience the first time round, it has kept the game alive and me once again entertained for another year (i came back lol) and hopefully many more.

Best: No more 8X8 skill gains!

Worst: adding in the anti macro code in the 1st place

On a side note i feel personally responsible for the itemization changes. There was a bug on 4th lvl T-maps where every item was vanq/invuln. I personally did about 1000 maps in a 2 week period and flooded the market to the point a change was needed. Sorry :)

Oh, and I would add in the Worst list: EA and AoS (not only for Powerscrolls, but because of the changes made to gear, too, with all those % and stuff. Yuck.)
Actually, when I returned to UO, it took me half a year to fully learn and understand the new weapon and armor system. But, I personally like those changes. It is challenging and fun putting together a good armor suit, and all the mods add to the diversity. I understand that some players find the system too complicated, but I always liked complexity.

However, it was wrong to make items too powerful and rare. Everything should be at a level of a spined or dull copper crafting tool, not higher.

Worse:
1) AOS
2) Power Scrolls
3) Insurance

Best:
1) I started right before UO:R so everything seemed ok until AOS.

Worst: For me was tram not so much the ruleset but being on the same server as the one I loved. And what AOS did(mostly to siege). The end of Chaos/Order its hard to choose.

Best: Custom housing, Better cleaner art less lag/crashes/blackholes,t2a

Dammmnnn, I didn't know about that...thought people were just farming balrons and tentacles of the harrower in khaldun for the vanq/invul stuff.

But you don't have to feel bad, AOS had been planned much longer ago. :D

Besides, I like the changes and the depth AOS brought. There were alot of times while I was playing Diablo II that I wondered - why don't they add this or that into UO, it'll be great.

My problem with it was the weeks of server crashes and reverts.

Speaking of reverts, if folks remember, reverts were very common in the earlier days prior to AOS. Whenever I got PK'd or made some money, I would wonder if there'll be a revert. I am glad to say that reverts hardly happen nowadays, the servers and codes are much more stable, or at least fail gracefully instead of catastrophically :)
