Title says it all...

I just re-installed my OS and I am wondering since SA is based off the KR client, should I just bite the bullet and attempt to learn the KR client in preperation for SA?

Or will SA be sufficiently different from KR that I could just keep using 2D until it's release? I personally cannot get around not having my mouse wheel for targeting :(

Guess nobody really knows how different SA will be from KR?

Wait for SA. Theres no telling how different it will be, so why bother to learn a client that will be obsolete soon either way?

I would say Yes, because SA is going to be functionally closer to KR than it will to the 2d client.

Even just learning how to build macros and hotbars and what they can do will put you WAAAY ahead of most people, and learn how to incorporate UIs (or even further to tweak the UI) will be even better overall.

Any questions can be asked in the KR forum and a good group of people will be there to answer them accordingly.

At this point, if you are a fan of 2D, I would wait a little longer. KR is a bit of a shock to the system and has some stability issues - in it's current state, there is a risk that it will leave you with a bad taste that would interfere with your enjoyment later on. There's no guarentee that SA won't suffer the same problems (the complexity of re-encoding 10 years of mish-mashed systems boggles my mind), but I hope they will be able to polish it sufficiently to give people a better first impression than KR unfortunately had.

( I say this, having made the switch to KR-only ... the UI is very powerful and once my imagination made the flip to actually seeing the world in the new graphics it was beautiful, but it did take a lot of time for that to happen )

SA was originally going to be available for KR users only. Then EA saw how much the majority of players (Including me) despised KR, and began to re-work on SA making it able to be accessed by 2D client as well. Which is why we haven't had an expansion in years.

Hmmm I guess I could at least install it... Maybe play 2D when it is important. I dunno sigh just wish they didn't lock up the mouse wheel to a few functions.

Anyways thanks for the input/advice :)

The user-options menu lets you change the mouse behavior to cycle through friends or enemies instead of zooming.

(I keep it set on zooming because I find it so useful)

Give yourself time to adjust to the new client, don't run Doom or fight ing Factions or whatever of that type, instead, pick an activity, be it crafting, be it mining, be it lower end PvM and work your way through the system of setting yourself up as though it were a completely new game.

Create a character on another shard just to go through the tutorial (even if you don't stick with the character).

Visually remember that you are working against up to 11 years' worth of mental familiarity and while things will be somewhat familiar there IS enough difference that it will take some time for it to sink in.

And as always, do NOT be afraid to ask questions... not everyone here blindly hates the KR/SA client.

I tried KR for awhile. Looked way the hell to different, ran alot slower than 2D, took way too long to set up macros, and crashed alot. Even when just training pets on a Shadow Ore Ele, it would crash.

That's pretty weird, runs faster than 2D on my computer sometimes <_<

I dabble in KR from time to time, mostly to craft certain items. But I've learned a lot of ways to make macros and the basics. I just can't get over the movement when my chars run vs the movement of the land. I know it sounds silly, but I get vertigo fairly easily and that sets it off a bit. I'd try playing with KR at least a bit to get a basic understanding of where they are heading. I like a lot of the features, just not fully playable by me, yet.

Wait for SA. KR is a piece of garbage that never should have been released in it's current state.

Hopefully SA will not turn out the same now that the 3d whiners can play that KR crap till SA is actually a useable client. I blame alot of the cause of KR being so lousy on the constant whining from 3d players that HAD to have the KR client instantly after 3d was discontinued. Sorta forcing the devs hand to release a sub-par product. I can think of one constant poster in particular who really lead the charge on demanding KR become availible to him simply because he didn't like 2d. Basically helping to forge KR into the piece of crap it is today so he didn't have to play 2d for awhile (BooFrigginHoo). Now he acts like he's all about making KR better when it was the fault of people like him that made KR turn out so lousy in the first place.

Go figure......

I would get used to KR. My friends and I have been using it since our return to uo and love it.

SA is KR 2.0. Therefore, knowing KR will help you with SA. Plus, its a great client. :)

Some characters can be set up relatively easily in KR, such as paladins and other basic builds that require no targeting or other trickery. These are good for paddling in the shallow end of KR as far as adventuring goes.

I don't think trying KR out will hurt. I've been using the KR client about 80/20 to the old 2D client. I can't hunt using the 2D client any more, I move soooo much slower in 2D. The one click looting/spell casting is really nice too. I know, however, that everyone likes what they like, so it may not be for you, but I heard that the SA client should be alot closer to KR than to 2D in functionallity.

Well... that was on my 7 year old computer(XP, single core, 1.8 AMD, 1.5GM RAM, 256MB Video Card). It finally died 2 days ago. I bought a new computer(Vista 64bit, quad core, 2.2 AMD, 4GB RAM) and am in the process of acquiring a new graphics card for it(it came with a crappy shared RAM graphics card). I have yet to get either UO client up and running and am particularly dreading the necessary updates for either client.

Interesting stuff, I think I will at least try it, not sure if I can manage the targeting but I will see... had trouble before. Just figure it might be a good idea to shake off some of the 2D habits before SA gets released...

Thanks for all the replies! I appreciate it alot! :D

I would love to try KR, but I"ve downloaded each and every patch. But my nVidia card simply says "Huh?". I seriously can't even walk from one side of my house to the other on KR.

That sucks Garth... :sad4: Maybe it will get rectified with SA? I have an old ATI myself, seems to work with it so far.

Are your video drivers up to date? I know it's an obvious question, but sometimes the obvious is easily overlooked. I have an aging nVidia card but it seems to manage pretty well with fresh drivers and most settings adjusted upward.
