Can Cursing Get You Banned?

Hoping someone here can answer the above.

Ok, I have a friend whom I see a lot of in-game. He is funny and a good player, but he curses as he breathes. I know him IRL too, and that is just how he is. The sky is not just blue, it is "F-ing blue". He will call you a "B-Word" and actually mean it as a term of endearment. Cursing is an adjective as well as an expletive with him. I admit I can be prudish sometimes, but it honestly embarrasses me when we are talking with other players around and he drops the F-Word or B-Word constantly. He does not use obviously derogatory terms (like the R-Word or N-bomb), just curses a lot. He is a great guy otherwise, very kind-hearted and always willing to give a helping hand, and it's not worth losing a friend over to me.

But, more than just embarrassing me sometimes, I'm worried that cursing in-game is bannable, for him or for me. We are not guilded, but we chat in party a lot. So, I'm hoping someone here can tell me, because all I can find on EA's website is the R-Word, which is not an issue.

That's definitely how I feel, but do you mean that that will get him (us) banned? Just want to be sure, so I can bring this up and show him this thread if I have to. I'm also trying to do this without alienating him or seeming like I'm scolding him. If I can show him that yes, he can get banned, he should have no problems or hard feelings.

This is from the knowledge base regarding what is legal in the game. #2 should answer your question.

"Although the Terms of Service agreement and the Rules of Conduct offer guidelines on behavior within the game, and this FAQ details possible reasons for banning, the dynamic nature of Ultima Online precludes rules which fit every situation. Furthermore, it would be dangerous to list all the possible exploits in the game which could get a player banned. If we post the exploits, it is just like broadcasting how to cheat. We try to plug any possible gaps for cheating when we see them, but doing so takes time. Ultima Online is very intricate, and changing one system, could deeply affect another.

Here are some clear guidelines which should help:

1. Do not use any third party program that has not been approved to be UO Pro . Even if the program you are using resembles or contains the same features as an approved program, there is a reason that it is not UO Pro.


2. You don't have to be nice, but you should follow the same social restrictions you would in any public place. Racial slurs, excess profanity, and plain discourtesy could get you banned. Ultima Online is not a free speech forum. We reserve the right to remove any player from our game for any reason at our discretion. We support your right to role-play an evil character if you so choose, but we do not support the right of one person to continually behave in an 'anti-social' manner. We don't expect everyone to be angelic, but when you log in to Ultima Online, you are not "just" at home anymore.


3. Scamming can be a controversial issue in Ultima Online. While many people may argue that scamming is not illegal, and is not against the rules, there are many cases where scamming becomes a serious problem. These cases are not easily classified, and will be determined by the GM based on the facts and evidence for each situation. If you have any questions about the social, or anti-social natures of your actions, we'd recommend that you re-think the situation.


4. Do not page the GM excessively. While we would like to be available to players who are having trouble in the game, we ask that you use a GM as a last resort, not the first. Make sure you have read any updates on our web site, and that you have studied all the documentation concerning your situation. Flooding the GM queue with comments, nonsense questions, or even insults may result in the termination of your account. Players who page continuously and flood our queue, hinder our ability to help those people really in need. It can (at least) get him a suspension ... but ban for him is certainly possible.

The only time i have ever had it where a GM will actually pay any mind to it is, if said person ahs been specifically asked to stop swearing or being offensive to a particualr person or group of people.

If he is then he MUST refrain from doing it, otherwise swear all you F**KING like

A friend on mine got banned years go. Then again he told the GM that tried to help him out to "Go F Yourself". He quit at that moment anyway.

Tell him to down load UOcurse and use those curses instead of typing in 4 letter words. It can be funny and it can't get you banned.

Maybe I've just lived in a bubble all my life, but what's the R-Word that can get you banned? I can't think of a single curse word that even starts with R.

Er, it's not a curse word. It's a word that mean non consensual intercourse that is used far too often in the gaming world to denote overwhelming defeat whether in pvp or other spheres.

in '00 I got banned for saying the N word.

a guy at brit bank was spamming say the word in my profile, which was the N word..

I was 13, gimme a break... of course I said it.

I call a spade a spade. I'm probably the least politically correct person I know. I agree 100% with George Carlin when he says that "some people believe that if you change the name of the condition somehow you'll change the condition. Well hey cousin ... doesn't happen!"

I think most people are too soft and easily offended, but since I don't make the rules I (for the most part) try and abide by them. But only when it's absolutely necessary.

I have a very colourful vocabulary but I don't think its appropriate to exercise it consistently in an online game. Amongst friends, fine, but I deal with enough abuse on a daily basis and don't want to log on to a screen of people effing and blinding when I want to relax. I work in social housing, have done for over 20 years now, and am possessed of a gallows humour as a private survival tool in my bitter and twisted working life. Despite all that I still do not think overuse of either of the R words in a light and derogatory fashion acceptable in this context

I had to make a key trigger for my headset. Too much profanity to have it voice activated for my guild mates. But please if you have to type the words you should have the common sense to know right from wrong. Well... were talking about common sense here.
