A funny story about my experience with EA customer support.

I played UO many years ago. Pre-tram... no lockable skills, no soulstones, having to actually trust a "real" smith to repair armor and weapons and... *gulps* no insurance.

Well I quit UO, partly because my real life had become pretty complicated and the game was becoming more frustrating than fun. Back then (before EA) Origin made it pretty clear that if you cancelled your account you lost everything... not even a hint of the possibility of "re-activation" in those dark times.

Eventually I came back to UO and started a new account. After a few months, I found out that you could reactivate old accounts so I contacted EA and engaged in the procedure of activating my "original" account. I was very excited about this as I couldn't wait to see my characters again after all these years!

Before handing over the account, EA wanted to verify that I was actually the original owner. I couldn't remember the credit card # used... or the phone #, or the serial # from the CD... just my address at the time. I was desperate to get my old account back so I started telling them about the characters on the account. The skills, etc... even little stories about the adventures they used to have!

You see... I had forgotten that I had DELETED all the characters from the account before I closed it. Naturally, this led to some interesting emails from EA as they only saw a blank account and here I am rambling on about these characters like they are real people! They couldn't even understand WHY I would want to reactivate an empty account... but in the end they returned my account to me.

When I logged in and finally remembered that I had deleted the characters, I understood the confused emails I had gotten from EA. I think in the end someone at EA said... "This guy is crazy... he's telling us stories about characters that don't even exist... um... just give him the account."

EA did respond to my request to re-activate the account.
EA did exercise due dilligence in attempting to verify ownership.

...and in the end...

EA realized that... everyone that plays UO is insane and it's best not to get crazy folks mad. ;)

Oh, there is an unexpected upside to the story. Even though I had deleted the chars... the account was reactivated with full vet status and I got all the rewards and perks. I didn't even think about that when I was trying to reactivate it... I just wanted my "toons" back.

Sane complaints/requests ignored.

But if you're crazy, EA says whoa. ;)

I did the whole thing through the EA customer website. (Not the UO website). You'll need the patience to go through selecting a bunch of dropdown menu's until you get the catagories for your request, then just full out the message form. I would give them as much info as possible to start, but maybe just the last 8 digits of the credit card used... I think they preferred 8 instead of 4... anyway... that's how I did it.

I didn't even have all the info they wanted but I think that persistance and trying to be polite payed off. Who knows, maybe the support guy was a gamer too and liked the stories. ;)

Oh, there is a fee to re-activate an old account. Maybe that's why the folks at EA were so confused about re-activating an account with nothing on it. The 8th Age promo was going on then and I think they were suggesting it would be cheaper in the long run (expansion packs, etc) if I just bought another disk and created a new 8th age account.

Either way, I got what I wanted so I'm happy.

Wait... you're not suggesting that EA has something to do with the proliferation of potions are ya? Hmmm... it does make sense though doesn't it. They have access to the playerbase, control of the means of production and distribution. How do we know that "real players" even run all those potion vendors... I mean who really has that much time to crank out potions all day!

I think you're onto something Surgeries... it's bigger than I had even anticipated and even more deadly! Those bastards can delete my entire account! And not just me... Lord Raven... maybe even Lady Rachel! But they are innocent and have no part in this. I need to warn my friends of the danger!

They won't stop me though... I'll go underground... hop from account to account... their only option will be to delete ALL THE SAM ACCOUNTS!

They'll never do that... they love their precious gold too much... heheh

Watch your back Surgeries... you're in this now!

very nice story

the Devs, support and everyone else has a hard job in a competitive market and they do the best they can

its nice to hear a good story ----- for every 10 gripes on the boards about support probably 5000 calls were handled well
