I was working on a new version of the Tailor essay for Stratics (see, people, we really ARE trying to update things!), and I noticed something.

If I created a new standard Blacksmith template with 2D, I get-
  • Mining: 30
  • Tinkering: 30
  • Blacksmith: 30
- A total of 90 skill points.

However, if I create the SAME character using KR, I get
  • Mining: 30
  • Tinkering: 30
  • Blacksmith: 30
  • TAILORING: 30
A total of 120 Skill Points.

And, the documentation of the templates in the Knowledge Base reflect the 4 skills @ 30, as well.

Is this accidental, or an undocumented (but intentional) incentive to get people to start their characters in KR? Of course, access to the Dark Knight quest would be incentive enough to me (if I actually HAD any open character slots).

If you do a custom start on kr do you start with 120 points too?

Since the changes to how STR/DEX/INT are gained, I look at it as a disincentive to start with higher skills.

I personally think characters should start as a 0 skill blank slate - those first 30 points gain quickly and having to pick a template gets people off on the wrong foot by making it look like a class-based game rather than encouraging people to try stuff and see what they like.

I agree. You should be able to pick human or elf, it should explain the difference between human and elf, you customize your look and your name and then you get popped into New Haven where a screen comes up giving some basic information about what to do there.

Immediately a new player will be like "okay, this game is definitely different, I get to walk around and decide what I want to do instead of picking something before I even get into the game"

I always hate that about other games, I feel like I have to do a bunch of research before even being able to play.

The 50/50 is pointless now anyway because you can train almost any skill to 50 in like 20 minutes.

Interesting right. whenever I create a new character I do it on KR only for the extra stat. Not much for the skill as I can buy that up anyway.
