In my ongoing attempt to offset some of the negativity around here... :grouphug: ...I'd love to know what everyone really enjoys about UO. After all, there are a ton of other games out there, not to mention a zillion other things to do, and yet we still find time to spend in Sosaria.

So what's your favorite thing about this game? Is it the thrill of peerless hunts? The nostalgia of Ultima from days gone by? Questing with your guildmates? PvPing? Doing champion spawns? Designing and decorating the perfect home? Collecting rare items?

Personally, I love any event or spawn that requires hunting in a group! I may not be particularly good at fighting, but I can heal, cure, and pet-rez, and it's a thrill to try keeping seven characters and five pets alive while something dire is trying to eat us all. :D So of course I'm having a grand time with these new stranger spawns!

How about you?

I love doing peerless with my guildmates or something else that is fun for the others. :grouphug:
Not having fun? Find a guild of people that you find you can have fun with. Whether you are doing something dangerous or just having people to chat with makes the game for me.
I love the depth and freedom of so many types of chars in UO.
I like UO. lol

Bank sitting... watching the pixels for about a hour as my mind aimlessly contemplates what I should go do over agian. Then the booze kicks in and I find a couple neurons kicking off to use my imagination and go do what the hell ever i want without any limitations.

Then I get killed and start over at square one bank sit for another hour

You know, my accounts may be inactive and i gripe with the best of em but lemme say this:

I love this game. This is the only MMO that offers this much freedom. I think thats why people are so critical and i know its why i am. If and only if they could get it right i would play til the end. I'll still reactivate my accounts but this little protest was needed for now.

Housing. All games have charater building, bunny bashing, Boss monsters, job skills, and so on. But UO is the only one, when at the end of the day, Your charater actually gets to go HOME.......:mf_prop:

The freedom!

I log in and it takes a while to decide what I'm going to do - shall I fish for MIBs or roleplay, sneak into a champion spawn or hunt ogre lords for sacrifice, take out my red or go mining?

Never a dull moment! :thumbup1:

Houses, decorating houses, building houses, seeing other player's houses, finding great spots for houses...

Maybe my fav is houses. !!!

Wait no it isn't, it is my second favorite thing.

First is seeing places & items in this game that a dev changed for us.Changed for the better. Things a real person worked on after hours for us because he gave an RA. Yep that will always be my favorite thing. I miss him very much.

Eli, Phaen, James, Berry, Elise, Cream, Pitr, Calis, Raistlin, Robert, Leila and the rest of the gang that I see nearly every time I log on (There are dozens of you, don't be offended if I left you out.)...

Rose, GRI, CYM, DoT (even though I've been ignoring DoT lately) and every other group that keeps me interested in trying new things or watching other people try their own new things.

VoV, Red Eye Tavern, Shanarra, the Pink Tutu and the rest of the long vanished places which hold memories for me.

Oh, and the game is pretty interesting sometimes too. But the people are what makes it truly fun, if they're for or against me.

My favorite part of the actual gameplay is the overall freedom. Not ONE other game offers the freedom UO does. When I play other MMOs I feel so restricted.. For example:

..."You must be level 40 to ride a horse!"
..."You cannot have your own house!"
..."You can have a house but it must be in an instanced village!"
..."You may not steal items from other players!"
...the list goes on..

UO is so unique. If you can think it you can probably do it.. It's more realistic than any other MMO when it comes to life in the in-game world.

Second to the freedom is the music. It's perfect.. and when you leave the game for any amount of time, listening to one song from UO will make you come back.

the freedom to try whatever crazy template i want.
the ability to play in a group when i want or alone when i want (i love PvM'ing alone when i'm stressed, i find it really relaxing).
the events! the Candle of Love event was the first real event i took part in (even though i been playing since 2003) and i loved it, and loved rubble, and loved moonglow, and love trying to kill the strangers ~ yay for fun events!
and PLAYER VENDORS! i love being able to sell things at my house on my own player vendor and i love being able to rent a spot in luna when i need higher exposure.
my friends always try to convince me to try other games but i never have listened to them... long live UO!
and what Wallenstein just said about UO being so much like real life. it really is a wonderful "alternate world" that i tend to get lost in for hours and days. i like that. especially when real life is stressful or irritating.

UO forces partying on you in many cases, but it does so without providing a party friendly enviroment. Sure, you might be able to solo a peerless with the right template, but the vast majority of players have to group to do a peerless.

UO just has the best housing, but it is not the only game with housing. DAoC and a few other games (can't think of them at the moment) have housing. The housing in DAoC is actually very well done (other than not being customizalbe).

I've been playing UO for seven years and still am playing it, the same account. I haven't done everything yet. I may get bored, but then I'll start playing again. Seven year old characters... I didn't realize that until I wrote this post. And I'm still considered a newb by many players.

Meeting people, being with my pirate crew, having fun and adventures together, making events with the RP community.
I also enjoy puzzling around with equipment, trying different skills and tactics, and fair PvP.
I very much enjoy the versatility of the adventurous landmasses, like Britannia and Ilshenar.

I love UO!

Hard to decide what my number 1 fav thing is atm, so i will give my top 3 :/

  • PvP!! (finally managed to devise a successfull pvp char, which took a while, but boy was it worth the effot!! )
  • Trading, I love speculating on events, buying items low and selling them high. Great feeling when things are going well!
  • Doing Champs with my mates, especially the Undead spawn, its a great challenge and requires tactics and skill to complete in a decent time, and thats without taking into account defending raids! I think Champ Spawn PvM in UO is some of the best gaming action i've ever had the privilege of trying.
Theres actually so many more things than this, but i won't go on too much.

UO is the best game i've played,
Long Live UO!

Use To -
Crafting : Hanging out at the forge doing repairs and filling orders for GM armor and weapons.

Entice : Luring those Brides out of Moonglow and killing them for their sandals.. artists for their paints.. and the Skara stableman to stable something that wasn't intended. :D

Now -
Shard get togethers : LS has one every Monday night at Skara (and now hunting together on Wed and Fri). Since I haven't really wanted a guild since I closed mine a while after LBR, it is a great way to socialize and meet new people.

Housing/Customizations : I love to make my mazes and occasionally to try to reproduce Old UO housing on part of my house plot.

Bullfrogs : Come on, everyone should have a few. They even come in Pink, and no skill required.

T-Maps : Even if it isn't nearly as fun to dig them up any more, it is still a brief thrill when I open a creature's corpse and see a map.

I like that it is a fun game that supports many playstyles.

I like Trammel, because effectively in the "old days" PvP was the only playstyle. The others were by definition subordinate to it.

I like the mix of directed experience and big box.

Begging.

I used to love PvP, looting and even house decorating but then AoS hit and ruined 90% of the game. So now all that is left that is enjoyable is begging.

The whole thing is a big system that is composed of smaller, interconnected systems, and importantly, it was designed as it went along through the years, not from the top down. One result is that the point of an individual being there is not pre-determined. You come in, do what you want, be what you want, and a major point of being there comes down to the people's interaction with each other. The people create the biggest goals, and the world is their environment.

Economy, vastly varied origins of items felt necessary by people doing different things (think: crimsons, ash lumber, power scrolls), extreme variety in templates (part of why I bitched so loud when they nerfed MR gear, that change reduced template variety), very touchy balance within PVP (still not quite right but much more right than not), in short: an intricate world with complex interactions between different aspects of it.

I like all of that, plus it's all using a straightforward interface that's easy to identify what's what in (2d client).

UO's age (or shall we use the word, maturity) is not necessarily a bad thing.

My favorite thing about UO is.

1. No levels, a newbie can play with a vet char.
2. Siege Perilous
3. No realm split and stupid code that stop you from chatting with your enemy

This short comic strip captures it all.

UO fan behavior borders on the cultish sometimes and I still think it's pretty funny. I expect no less than a half a dozen people posting that games like WoW are garbage and only an intelligence deficient human being could POSSIBLY enjoy something that's not UO.
