Why dont you see advertisements about UO like you do about WOW or other games? Wouldnt advertising this game be a good thing

I quess EA has given up a bit with UO, they think it would be like :bdh:

I think the best way to revive UO, would be making Ultima Online 2, to which you could transfer your old characters... Same camera angle, mostly same idea, just getting rid off the bad stuff and mistakes made in the past.

im sure they don't have the money to. maybe we will see some ads for SA

But really, what can the sell?... "Come play UO we just got hitching posts!"

This game is supported by people who have played for a long time, not new customers. The sad thing is I can never see UO being a competitor again.... EA does not care about this game. Its sad, because all UO needs is some attention.

Really does anyone have only 1 acct any more?

I guess it might be an issue of how can they advertise UO? In terms of gameplay systems, graphics, and other things there are many games that are far more advanced. The game isn't visually appealing compared to anything that is out now so any real ads would be a waste of money I think in the end. I think they've given up attracting new players away so I don't think there really is a need. It's not as if massive amounts of money are going into the game. I would even hazard a guess that EA doesn't really care about market share in the MMO market with how they've handled their last few attempts and seem adapt destroying their own chances (ie. UXO).

Advertising costs money.

Unless advertising gets you customers, it just cut down on the profit margin.

In other words, it has to be effective.

World of Warcraft advertises because they can. Their advertising isn't about getting subscribers, it's about solidifying the game's reputation as a cultural phenomenon.

Let me ask everyone the following questions.

  • Does anyone really think that Ozzy Osbourne really plays World of Warcraft?
  • Does anyone think that the suggestion that Mr. Osbourne plays World of Warcraft might persuade even a single person to play the game?
  • If Osbourne could get people to play World of Warcraft, would Ronnie Dio get people to play Warhammer Online: The Age of Reckoning, or maybe some other former Black Sabbath singer could help to advertise Ultima Online? Maybe have David Coverdale or Rob Halford help to revive Everquest? And maybe have Ripper Owens do ads for Asheron's Call? Maybe Meat Loaf could advertise for Second Life, or Barry Manilow do ads for Pogo?

The ads you see for World of Warcraftaren't about subscribers. It's about what I think they call "branding" in marketing circles. For UO, it'd be just a waste of money.....

.......Until, and unless, there is a new expansion and a new game client to advertise (a game client that is workable).

And even then I'd advise them to limit their ad budget. Ultima Online, I would argue, should be focusing more on current and former subscribers, rather than new ones. And that's more by word of mouth than anything.

they don't think that advertising would be economical..

it wouldn't draw in enough players to cover the cost.

Let's see what do you advertise at full retail...

A client that uses 11+ year old graphics

or

A client that has updated graphics and UI but has not been finished, is about to be revamped completely, and brings scorn from people who are ALREADY customers to the people trying to use said client?

The Blizzard CEO stated last year that less than 1% of their new subscribers are a result of advertising.. and less than 5% are a result of in store presence.

What would be the point of a game like UO spending millions on advertising for 400 or 500 new players?

Word of mouth is still the number one form of advertising for an MMO. If your friends are playing.. then you are likely to go where they do. If the game is worth it.

Considering it's age if they were to take that approach they'd need to get The Rolling Stones.......

Uo could have stayed a competitor if it weren't that EA has been showing and maintains a horrible track record of support and development processes for it's Online Ventures.

The Same issues we complain about I've heard from Players of DAoC and Battlefield 1942 in terms of their online conflict resolution.

Every major Studio learned from Mistakes that we're made with UO. Every major Studio it seems except EA, in 11 years they haven't corrected the simple fundamental flaws that have been plaguing this game and the Customer Support bases restrictions have steadily declined.

Do I think UO could become a Major contender again? Yea probably, will it? Doubtful as long as the games corporate owner keeps mixing up what works in the Console and Standalone PC Markets (an area EA has HUGE Success) and the MMO and other Online gaming ventures.

The ivory tower problem. This is how hundreds of thousands of customers have been able to clearly see problems that EA executives are still unaware of, after more than a decade. And yes, they're unaware of these problems. Not just ambivalent. They listen to their shareholders. That's it. They don't listen to their customers, or the gaming press, or industry analysts, or even their studios.

When a studio like Mythic tries to contact EA about purchasing issues for instance, they get the same cut-and-paste crap that you or I would. EA doesn't allow Mythic to post in threads like this, so you're not going to hear that from the horse's mouth. But there's the coffee if you feel like smelling it. My personal opinion (not worth much, I know) is that Mythic should just go ahead and talk to us. EA isn't watching anyway, it's not like they'd ever know.

UO could get some market share if they cut the monthly fee. Being the cheapest MMORPG would definitely bring new players.

Putting the game in stores as a CD in a case only would be fairly cheap, even the bargain bins at game stores get people buying from them.

Designing a client to be fully 3d with great graphics would also be a major step up. KR is just a fancy looking 2d. This would only be successul if the following item is fixed.

Above all, the issues within the game need to be addressed. Stop adding new content and fix the bugs/balance. Putting major changes onto TC for only a week (if that) is not a good solution. I'd rather see patches on TC for a month (at least) to test things before publish.

Sadly SA is being added to the house without fixing the sinking foundation.

Ultima online two would have been brilliant. Ea scrapped it twice in the past. I believe this was mostly due to them being afrade of their playerbase freaking out when their castles didn't transfer to the sequal game.

I wish people weren't so attached to this junk. Could have had a sequal, but instead we have slow stagnation. :(

It's like trying to hold tightly onto sand. Eventually, your hand is empty. People just tend to get so skittish when a sequal is mentioned.. afrade to lose their little plot in luna.

Honestly though, I don't believe advertisements would help much. I mean, realistically speaking, it would be like trying to run a massive ad campaign for transistor radios years after televisions were accessable by most customers.

I'm not just bashing the game, but I simply don't believe that new players would be drawn to it, no matter how many millions were tossed into ads.

Hell, wouldn't just having the game on the shelves at WalMart or Target be more advertising than has been given to UO over the last few years?

It's too bad, but I imagine the only people they are trying to sell their new releases to are either retired players who keep an eye on the game, or the existing player base which is ever dwindling...la

EA said there is not enough money in their online games (notice you don't see DaoC or War hammer either). They want to stick to console games... go figure - there is more potiential.

And to be honest, the updated client is not on par with everything else out there. Even the camera angle in UO is not really what most people want now... personally, I like the game system itself, which is why Im still here. I left before and experienced the graphics of all those other games, but I really missed the way UO plays.

Unfortunately, those of us who value game play over glitz are fewer than those who want graphics and pixelated crack... so UO doesnt have a lot to offer to a new gamer. Im still optimistic about SA, though. *crosses fingers*

I got sick in my stomach when I learned over the holiday that a 16yr old cousin started playing WoW a few months ago and he loves it. Then I find out a 10yr old cousin just this week subscribed to WoW.
Somehow they all think that this is the way to go.

How can I convince them to play UO when UO crashes constantly (2d & KR)? How can they find the patience to learn the depth of UO, when the game itself doesn't give you the details you want.... rather.. you have to go to Stratics to get your info?
