Actually, an argument I won in the past (as, rather than trying to dispute me, the other side degenerated into personal attacks), the only real thief is the Crate type. The ones that steal from others are robbers and variants thereof. There is a definite semantic difference (and for that matter, in real-life legal terms) between burglary (crate thieving) and violating the person of a living or dead person to steal (robbery, pickpocketing, mugging, banditry, etc.).
You'd think that the "player-thieves" would want to identify with the more flashy titles that actually are relevant specifically to their profession, not the generic one that by their own choice, forces their grouping with common burglars and artifact looters.
Sorry I'm with Rico on this one... By stealing from other things than players be it items spawned that require stealing skill to obtain or Stealing from monsters, your not following the Thief Code.
"The Code"
All thieves are expected to follow the following rules:
1. Thou shalt not steal from or loot fellow thieves.
2. Thou shalt not purposely reveal fellow thieves.
3. Thou shalt not identify disguised thieves.
4. Thou shalt not kill fellow thieves.
5. Thou shalt not follow fellow thieves around telling people that they are thieves.
6. Thou shalt offer aid and comfort to fellow thieves when possible.
7. Thou shalt not ask stupid questions that are thoroughly covered in the FAQ.
8. Thou shalt check the forum to see if thine question as already been answered.
9. Thou shalt retain a sense of humor.
10. Thou shalt not call thy self a thief if thou hast not stolen from thine fellow player.
11. Thou shalt remember that thine profession is spelled thief and not theif.
Furthermore any Faction thief that takes the trouble reveal, point out and/or kill thieves of other factions is literally in violation of Rules 1 through 5 so I don't consider them thieves either. The Brotherhood of Thieves should be held above such petty things as Factions!
By those of us that firmly believe in following the Code that was put down years ago calling us an "elitist" club is an honor we're trying to raise the bar and standard that we feel is deemed to be the best standard for the class. After all I thought this Fan site was to promote community, The individual Class forums are doing just that. We strongly focus on the Thief aspect of the game as a Play style not just a Skill in the Thief Forums, instead of getting upset why not say "Wow mission accomplished".
