I think the new stuff comming is pretty cool.
New Replicas break, same with imbuet stuff, but does it really matter i mean no one
forces you to neither imbue anything or use replicas.
I only see this as an item-sink, next to the no-so-well-working gold-sink.
Now we only need more bind-on-pickup items, and we are on our way to a more balanced game.
I don't have an issue anymore with the systems coming that use breakable items. I am nervous about the trend of PoF proofing items in general.

It's just odd to me that management of this game seems to contradict itself so harshly from year to year. One year it's a great idea, next year it's not. Resource gathering, PoF, BoS, countless skill nerfs. Agree or disagree with whatever changes come through the pipe. But why are they designed overpowered or easily accessible... then allowed to remain unchanged for so long? Where are the collections re-vamps and removal of heartwood quests?

The older system should win. If something new is introduced and causes something established to be abused then the new system should have to change.

I don't see these things from the current team so much. Just thinking back through all of the years.

What exactly is stupid or self-defeating about the idea that your equipment eventually wears out? I have done the quest of building the perfect suit bla bla etc etc and know just how difficult it can be.

However, I would rather have a system where it is not so difficult to craft or farm decent items with the caveat that they need to be replaced eventually instead of burning 500 barbed kits (most likely obtained by an exploit by the source) to get that ever elusive last piece. Unbreakable equipment is stupid and self-defeating.
Dear Tom, as you are the only sane poster in this thread I want to point out that this thread is a perfect example of how and why uo has dropped off a bit

"I want it now, I want it to last forever and I want it to be mine, mine, mine"

please...............

time will tell if it is a "Quitter"-stopper or the opposite
i forecast more people will go, the dev´s dont do market-research, they follow the wrong (smal-part) voices from stratics.
working against the mainstream in mmo market is selfdestruction, punkt-aus

Anyone who'd quit just because items can break is daft. Seriously, if that's all it takes for a player to leave, they weren't planning to stick around in the first place. Once again, nobody is forcing anyone to use breakable items. If you don't like them, don't use them.

And you'll have that system with Imbuing.

You will, however, also have the option of having a suit that can be PoFed and can last forever, but you'll have to put up with a great lack of predictability about what your suit will have. You'll have to hunt around for items for longer, but in the shorter term.

Oh....And it's stupid and self-defeating to get rid of PoF because UO is now an item-based game, and to lose an item is tantamount to losing a skill. Making us lose items is, by definition, favoring the richest players in the game and those that have the biggest guilds, because they can replace items more easily.

I am inferring from your positions on this issue that you are considerably richer in-game than I am. So look at it this way.

Guys like you (if I'm right about you) will be able to have a sports car that suits all of your needs and is heavily souped up, but is flimsier and will need to be replaced periodically.

And guys like me will be able to purchase a used Chevrolet Celebrity or Nissan Altima or Mazda 626 (insert solid family sedan with good reliability record here), and we'll maintain it as best we can. Periodically I'll loot a sports car from a kill, or at least a tire for one or something, and I'll sell it to you.

Having said that? I am not planning on leaving the game if they get rid of PoF. It's not a deal-breaker for me. I'll adapt, especially with Imbuing coming down the pike.

I will, however, have to spend considerably more time shopping and getting dressed, and that will be annoying. My time in-game is increasingly limited and I'd rather not spend all of it shopping.

There is a (kind of) more simple solution to this. Melee suffer the most severe penalty to non-renewable items. Re-vamp the item wear calculation a bit. Add in increased resistance to loosing durability on armor tied to tactics. A 1 to 1 percentage increase from skill to item wear. So 100 tactics would allow for an item to wear twice as slowly. Add the same wear bonus for weapons based on Swords, Macing, Archery, Fencing or mage weapon (tied to magery). Exclude items with the "Use best Weapon skill" mod from getting any durability wear bonus.

Add in a bonus to repair these items to blacksmiths/tailors/tinkerers/carpenters who also have arms lore. The bonus would give them a greater chance to repair without loosing durability. Something like +1% per 10 points of arms lore skill. Does that sound balanced enough?

Yes??????? realy Yes??????????????
If he uses breakable items, clearly he's accepted that they may be lost... If he doesn't use those items, and uses PoF'able kit, he doesn't have to risk losing the item unless he gets careless with it.

WHAT about a tamer, found HIS pet, maybe a RARE blaze Doggy worth 1oo of mil.

Pets can be lost, they go wild, there are stable bugs, It happens. UO is a game and those items are just pixels. If the item is too precious for you to risk losing it, stable the pet or bank the item. But if you really are going to go ape at the mere thought of losing pixels, you need to get into RL more. Because a few similar losses in the RL world really put those pixels in perspective.

So WHY should a fighter LOSE HIS weapon BUT a Tamer NOT
You choose to use a breakable item or not, just as I choose to bond with pets before I use them. If you don't want to lose the weapon, bank/sell it and use something else. If I don't want to lose a pet, I keep it happy and let it bond before I use it.

Give Pets Durability of max. 255 ! Balance, Balance nothing else
See above. Nobody is making all your items breakable, so if you don't want to lose them, you don't have to use the breakable items.. How many times does it need to be said before you take it in? If you don't want those breakable weapons, you can always sell them to someone who does.

Has any DEV the courage to answer such a simple question ?????????
You probably scared them off with all the ?????'s. Use another keyboard and maybe they'll answer you...

I agree that PoF should not be taken out of the game.

I don't think that's what they're doing though.

I think they are creating 2 categories of items. PoF-able, and non-PoF-able.

You can have your items PoF-able, and have the security of knowing your items will never break. This is my preferred approach, for the moment.

Or you can have your items non-PoF-able, and enjoy the flexibility of Imbuing, and be able to use replicas.

Or, you can opt for a hybrid approach.

If this is what they are doing? I think it's a great solution.

Exactly my view...

Plus this joint system allows newcomers to gather a GOOD suit at LOW cost fast... balancing PVP.

A hit on the merchants... yup.

My perspective... too bad.

I wouldn't even dare to use any real life analogies on this issue if I were you.

Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust.

I don't have time right now to go into why not being able to PoF ad infinitum need not be a bad thing for "poor" people. Thinking so is taking a very narrow-minded look at the UO economy and making a slew of invalid assumptions. In fact, it would most likely be a boon for an average player.

I will say this much that it is almost always the average player that usually earns items that are most susceptible to becoming obsolete due to fall in demand stemming from invulnerability. There are countless examples of this in Ultima Online. Your focus on prices is completely from the point of view of the buyer but you forget that the average player also sells items. Yet, most of the things that an average player is most likely to earn sells for peanuts, if even.

To ask for a suit that is permanent in a sandbox mmorpg like Ultima Online is asking for the death of the game. Even if the suit is, in theory, permanent (like it is now) the developers will be forced to make you want to change the suit by making it obsolete. The end result is the same but the journey is different. One is natural, the other is not.

Well, you seem to be struggling to grasp the idea that you have a choice in what you use. But hey, maybe you'll figure it out eventually...
