AGREED. it doesn't make sense to me to put a lot of money into developing KR and now SA yet have no shelf presence at the gaming stores and the walmart stores.

I think they should redo the UO Gold jewel case that they sold at Wal-Mart for a while. Only push it to all major retailers. And make it up to date on expansions. Call it UO Legacy.

But I'm sure that shelf space is expensive. So honestly I would rather them do digital distribution and put the leftover money back into developing SA.

Would love to see SA on Shelves when it comes out but if they do a download of the game instead I hope they do what they did with Mondains Legacy and just patch the new expansion in patchs over a period of time think for ML there was like 5 or 6 big patchs then we had to buy an upgrade code for the expanison to access the new content..this would be my second choice if they dont over a box for SA but Im hoping for a box cause I feel thats the only way your going to get new players to try out the game.

Spending the money to put UO on store shelves (good shelf exposure==paying a lot) would mean that if it doesn't sell, Mythic takes a huge hit and factors into whether to kill UO or not.

Personally I think they should put the game into stores, but only as a cd in a paper case. Sell it for bargain bin prices or whatever have the manual on the cd.

Arrrrr, ta minimize their risk, EA should do a combo pack of their games. And their subscriptions, too!

I can't figure this crowd out. There is no way, repeat, no way that they will spend the money to put a game on shelves in 2009 with 1997 graphics. What part of that don't you guys understand?

Plus we will be able to craft the other ones that they need to use the token for :D

The new SA client won't be 1997 graphics.

they should put it in arts+craft stores and market it as adventure/fantasy game where you can decorate your own house and trade items with other players

put it in gaming stores as a unique PvP game for people sick of Warcraft.

they could at least make one for us to order. you can't buy a $30 gift code and like print it out and give it to someone for a present.

I believe every UO player agrees with this. It would show the game is running healthy.

Agreed,

I personally like games for games, its the young people that don't and only want eye candy... Mind you some games with good graphics are good aswell... and some games with bad graphics well suck... but so far from 2, 3 D and KR i would pick 2D any day... then KR... i wish we could get the KR macros in 2d :\ oh well lol

Well with SA there Certainally should be something on selves it might even come with a mini lord british in a space ship... or something LOL

So it will be what, 2000 graphics? You dont really think the new client will come anywhere near the level of graphics that the rest of the MMO's out there have, do you? Look at a game like the Madden football series (sports games arent my thing, but...).
If the developers were super-ambitious and gave UO the equivalent of 2000 type graphics (using madden as an example):

They would still be a far cry from todays graphics abilities:

...And I think we can all be sort of sure that the new clients graphics will not be on par with even the first screen shot above. So maybe they wont be 1997 level graphics, but its safe to say we arent going to be graphics that will be considered competitive in todays MMO market. So putting it on the shelves is a poor marketing choice... it probably wouldnt net many new users, and it is stupid to do it to placate existing subscribers who WANT to play and will just download it rather than quit (even if they claim otherwise) over not being able to buy a hard copy.

This game is dying a slow death, we should be thankful for the updates and expansions we are getting.

EA doesnt care that we have played this for a decade and have a lot of time and emotion invested, it is a business. Plain and simple. As soon as UO becomes unprofitable, they will pull the plug, make no mistake. Just ask the people that played Sims Online.

1. Those are from a completely different visual perspective, and can't be compared.

and

2. KR's graphics ARE superior to the 2000 football shot.

With #1 I was refering more to the pixelation between the two, and yes... I wasnt being entirely fair :D I actually like the KR client quite a bit, to be honest!

#2. Youre right... I looked at a screen shot side by side and I have to conceed that the KR graphics are obviously better. Forgive my crabbiness!

I may sound "doom and gloom" about it, but I would love to see UO prosper and come back to even a portion of its former glory. I love UO. Thats why I came back... even if the graphics may not be quite on par with other MMO's out there, I think the game play system makes up for it, and even back when the shards were crowded, I always felt like there was a personal touch involved in the game. Be it the gifts for anniversaries/holidays or what have you, it seemed like it was more than just throwing stuff at the subscribers to keep them happy.

So even though I pancake, I cringe inside whenever I think about UO ending... I think I complain out of the hopes of being proven wrong! :coco:

It would do better if it were on shelfs... I hope they make a ton of SA copies

I haven't seen UO in stores for over 2 years. That is about the only way to get new players

I still see UO boxes in a few different stores (EB Games, Futureshop) some of them have been sitting on the same shelf for 4 years or so.

While it might do better, you have to consider (well... technically you DONT have to, lol) that the financail cost of it (its much, much more than just manufacturing the product) could end up being a make-or-break moment for UO. With UO doing poorly, and EA also not doing well, the expense of such an undertaking could mean that if loads of people didnt pick up UO and subscribe, the cost might be something that would be the final nail in UOs coffin. They might not be able to recover from the expense.
I work in this field, and I dont think people realize the amount of money that goes into something that seems as simple as producing and shipping a game.

With todays market & economy, shelving an item, even in a walmart's not a smart move.

Investing in packaging and distribution can be costly. Notice deisel isn't dropping as fast as regular fuel? Everything you buy, in a store, is delivered by truck. Walmart drivers make a decent buck too.

No, online, for now, is the most cost saving route to take.
A gift card with a dollar value and a link to the download page will work, along with a nice card and some encouraging words as to why UO is a good game.

As far as Stygian Abyss, well, one can only hope for some type of promotion.

Not going to happen for a multitude of reasons they have gave time and time again.

They've listed them in town halls, on the boards, and at other various occasions. I agree with them that it comes down to shelf space in the stores such as Best Buy, Walmart, Circuit City, etc.

Do you think they will bother with stocking a game that's over 10yrs old? Why take up shelf space on something that won't sell as well as the new WOW expansion?

I want them to start advertising more on the net and offering UO downloads more. I hate messing with disks.
If people insist on a disk then charge an additional five bucks to the download cost for a hard copy.
