Within the Dreams of a Child

Curled upon the large bed was a silvery mountain of gossamer soft fur. This living mountain rose and fell in measure with the precious package it guarded. Cocooned within this downy sarcophagus was the small girl. The child's little arms and legs were pulled inside the blue robe that hung a bit loosely on her stunted frame. That tiny blue bundle stirred and whimpered, crying out in genuine pain. The mountain lifted its large head at the sound and movement of its tiny charge, growling softly at the unseen enemy. It looked around the room as the tip of its tufted tail flicked in irritation. Its sensitive nose smelled nothing that would have caused the little girl harm.

It swiveled its head inward, cocking its head slightly to look down at the child. The girl cried out with the nightmare again as the blue-bundled body shivered despite the warmth surrounding her. The vollem lowered its head and gently nudged the sleeping girl as it purred reassuringly. The little girl shivered again before opening her brown eyes with a worried expression. The vollem trilled softly in quiet greeting to the awoken child. The girl's face relaxed and she smiled as tiny arms popped out of the robe and opened wide. The purring vollem nestled its head obediently in that welcoming embrace. Her small hands wrapped around its purring throat, pulling it tightly to her chest. Despite the discomfort of the angle, the vollem tolerated it in surprisingly good humor.

Soon enough the child had been lulled back to sleep and the small chest rose and fell in rhythm with the vollem's. The vollem carefully and gently disengaged its head from the child's limp arms. It stretched its neck and resumed its watch over the child, ever watchful for the boogeymen that came out at night.
