what are soul gems used for?

dunno but they sure are pretty. i've been wanting to buy one--how are they obtained even?

at the new SA fel undead champ you find named bones (bone have like a timer on them then they go poof) on the ground. You take the bones and find the grave of the same name. You double click the bones and target the grave. The soul gem is a possible reward (the main reward actually). Best i can tell is that they do magic arrow type damage to someome when you use them. I have no idea if they are useful at the spawn itself.
