Weird aspect of Cartography I never knew about.

So I have an old Bard/T-Hunter and I realized how much he had in common with my Tamer, and I decided to consolidate the two characters.

Instead of just deleting the T-hunter, I stoned Carto and Lockpicking and decided to try a couple maps with my Tamer first. I put LP'n on the Tamer and clicked the first map and realized that I couldn't even look at the previously decoded maps. I got the message that basically said 'Someone else decoded this, you got no clue where to dig'.

So I put Carto on the Tamer and sure enough those maps previously decoded by my T-hunter were now diggable. Then I decoded a couple level 3's with the Tamer, and tried viewing them with the T-hunter who now has no Carto and he got the same message. I then took Carto off the Tamer and sure enough those level 3's I decoded with her were still diggable, even though I no longer had Carto.

So I guess if you have enough Carto to decode a map, its diggable by you forever, but if someone else decoded the map, you need enough Carto to 'use' that map?

I am only trying to clear this up because in the end I don't want to keep Carto on the new Tamer/T-hunter, but I have at least 50 level 5's previously decoded by my old T-hunter.

Seems I have to keep Carto on my new Tamer-Hunter until I complete all those maps I decoded with my old T-hunter, then I can proceed to decode as many as I want before I stone Carto off for a more useful skill (Spellweaving most likely).

I hope I didn't make this more confusing that it needed to be.

Actually it is fairly common for players with enough soulstones. Most of them are switching between carto and lockpick. Carto for decoding the map and lockpick instead, when they are going to lift the treasure. That way they are having another 100 skillpoints to spend.

That was my original plan. And its what I did with my old T-Hunter. But I am forced to keep Carto on the new Tamer-Hunter because without it, she can't even read the maps the old character decoded. On the other hand, the ones she decodes, she does not need to keep Carto on to view and dig up. Just like the old T-Hunter.

I'm sure its normal and working as intended, but it sucks. I was hoping for some work-around, like putting on Carto and re-reading each previously decoded map to make them diggable by me, but that didn't work. Looks like I am stuck with Carto for at least the duration of these 50+ level 5's, then I can Stone it off like before and continue on my merry way.
