Total newbie... lost...

I heard about the 14 day trial so I decided to give the game a shot. From what I know the game is pretty old so I expected things to be pretty deserted, so I did some reading around to try to grasp some basics...

But I'm still lost. Pretty different from any game I've ever played before, and since there's so few people around to ask questions to or whatever, I'm getting nowhere fast :stretcher:

I'm lost in pretty much every way... what I should be trying to do as a newbie, skills to start out with, what's good, what's not, gearing up... I don't even know where the majority of players "hang out" (by which I mean the main social "center" of the game).

I wonder if it's even possible to basically play this game alone... I don't even see newbies in the newbie area.

So yeah... I like to get along without "begging" but... man. Place is deserted. Looks like a really interesting game and I'd like to get along in it a ways.

Hints and direction appreciated... gracias...

I've rolled a couple characters on both Pacific and Napa Valley. Mele paladin type character, mage type, an archer, and a blacksmith. Spent a bit on each playing around to see what I like. They both have good latency for me but I'm not sure which I should really "choose".

I'm also thinking Mage would be a good starting choice simply because they have better travel options? Marking runes, recalling, etc? Too bad if that's the case, mage is pretty frustrating... fizzle fizzle... and my archer went broke like quick. (Killing a monster seems to cost more than you get off it ~_~)

Edit: I'm actually tooling around with my chivalry archer on Pacific right now, because I've been seeing a lot of posts on this board about "ABC archer", though Ihaven't picked up bushido yet. Is it just me or are arrows and bolts exceedingly expensive? Reagents on my mage didn't seem so bad (granted only tried mage for a few hours)... but working on the archery 50 skill quest, I've spent MOST of my time escorting NPCs instead of actually getting skill.

ABC archer should do you pretty well for making cash when you "grow up". My archer - plain ole Chiv Archer - also did Begging as a side job. Had decent skill level in that and had brought in extra gold between escorts.

NEWBIE TIP: Get a dagger and keep it in your backpack. Look for the "fat" sheep in Old Haven and shear them. To shear, double-click the dagger, target the sheep. You will get a pile of wool.

When you have 10-14 piles all nicely stacked, take them to the tailor in town by the Bank and sell them. I believe the going NPC price is 55-60 gold each.

Look thru the FAQs in here ... there may be things that you can do now, and I know there are some that are potentially useful later.

I would personally go for a mystic mage to start with, they seem pretty good at making money, then go for a tamer and make more? If your gonna pvp then I'd suggest speaking with someone who can help you build a suit, imbuing helps suit builds ALOT, not many people will just hand out gold because of so many people claiming to be "newbies" so I wouldnt waste my time by begging for gold, instead ask for help with a suit and training your skills, stratics is an awesome place for information so ask around and people will help!

Also join a guild as soon as you can, they help tenfold in doing spawns or any other pvm activities.

Good luck and welcome to the revolution :D :D

If you'd like an environ with more players you might try the Atlantic shard though latency might become an issue. On character templates I would suggest keeping it simple at first. You may indeed read about many good templates but to play them well a better understanding of the game may be needed. If, for example, you began a mage concentrate on developing those core skills with perhaps mysticism or inscription. The more complex templates may require expensive gear to be truly effective. As your in game experience grows you will better understand this and make more informed decisions. For those of us who have played for a long time perhaps we were lucky in that the game was much more simple.

Starting as an archer is not an easy task. If you want to got that way, you should consider to make your own arrows ... best with an extra char.
You need:
- wood
Use an axe type weapon at trees and you will get logs. Use the axe onto those logs to turn them into boards. (Boards are the same as logs but have less weight)
- feather
Kill bird type creatures und use a bladed weapon onto their corpses. You can loot feathers after that from them. (Works the same with leather and meat on corpses that can give those.)
- fletching
Use a fletchers tool to turn boards into shafts. (It is silly, but you really get only one shaft from one board.) After that you can build your own arrows. One arrow for 1 shaft + 1 feather.

There are monsters, that have arrows as loot. Centaurs and ratman archers are the more commonly hunted ones for them. But you should have at least a semi trained char for that.

OK guys thanks for all the advice. Maybe I'll work on 3 characters then.
- Mele/lumberjack
- Archer/chivalry
- Mage... with mysticism maybe? And inscription. And imbuing? I don't know how to make this work yet.

Also, is there any way to have more than one quickbar? There's a metric ton of spells in Magery alone... and then if I pick up necro or mystic... it's gonna be impossible to set up. I need more UI space >,<

Yes, you should be able to click the existing bar, and drag a new bar off of it. I forget the particulars, because I don't play using that client much, but I think I ended up with something like 4 or 5 bars when I set my mage up for it.

The new bars can be shorter than standard, and I think they can be made to run vertical instead of horizontal.

Yup - and there is a forum here that deals with the EC and mods for it as well as questions like this. But I think Basara is correct ... its click and drag for a new bar.
