UNLEASHED
The mountains safeguarding Wind were deathly silent at night, their peaks blocking nearly all of the moonlight from above. Despite its wards blocking entrance to those who did not possess the talent needed to gain entry, the city thrived as more and more users of the mystic arts came to call the place home.

Their Arch-mage was rarely seen by the general public, often away on business pertaining to matters that they themselves did not need bother with. If he deemed that these journeys were for the best, then so be it. They had more important matters to attend to. Securing wards, training novices, and so forth. It was a busy town after all, contrary to the belief of outsiders.

While the city itself might be protected, the passages around it were filled with monsters who would be all to willing in ending an unlucky travellers life. Dragons, Liches and daemons were the most common. And yet the entire place tied together in a way.

Outside, Solen patrolled the twisting paths in the mountain. What they did with who they bested, no one has yet discovered. Or cares to discover, in many cases.

Tonight however, no Solen were patrolling the paths.

Instead, they were locked in combat all over the mountain with attackers who seemed to not be in one location at once. They shifted from place to place like smoke, before resolidifying into form once more, to deliver a killing blow. Ichor soaked into the crevices in the rock, while bodies began to freeze in the cold air. Try as they might, the Solen could not slay their enemies. And so soon after it began, the battle ended.

With the last sentry dead, the group moved further up the mountain. Encountering no resistance, the gate into Wind was reached quickly.

One stepped forward and examined the etchings along the entrys walls. For several minutes all it did was stare, before moving back to its followers and whispered something to them. Nodding, the group dispersed back to the paths. Ordering all they found to make camp, and to let none get past.

High up the mountain, where no trails lead. A single sentry, that neither side knew existed, watched from her lofty perch. Trying to count heads, she quickly gave up and finished her sketch of what lay beneath her gaze.

Finished, she leaped nimbly from rock to rock down the mountain. All the while maintaining near silence. She had to find her superior, and tell him of what was happening to his home. Even as over a hundred figures made camp outside the mountains paths, driving stakes into the rock to hold their tents down.

The mountains safeguarding Wind were not quite so silent any longer.

To be continued.
