[Stealing] Stealing in Towns : hints on how not to get Guard whacked ?

When stealing in towns from containers, is there a way to help not to get Guard Whacked ?

Sometimes, right next to the container is a NPC so it is quite hard, even at 120 stealing, not to be Guard whacked. Unfortunately, most of the time the NPC does not move or is very slow to move.

Are there some tips which can help not to get much whacked from Guards when stealing in Towns ?

As far as I'm aware the only thing to do is wait until the NPC moves away. I tend to give up on those and go find an easier target.
