On Atlantic I am developing two crafts-elves. One is a general woodworker with lumberjacking, and the other is a metalworker/tailor with mining. I'm considering making a third character who could fight the ore elementals, and who would receive the lumberjacking and mining skills from the other two. His template would be something like:

elf
---
120: swords
100: tactics, parry
100: healing, anatomy
100: mining, lumberjacking

90/120/20 str/dex/int

* How would this character do against the various ore elementals?
* Would magic resist be a better choice than parry?
* Would moving the resource gathering skills from the other two have any negative repurcussions on them?
* Any other suggestions or comments?

If I do this, i'd probably change the original two craftsmen to human. I made them elves specifically to have a higher chance of getting colored ores and wood, but if they arent resourcing any more, the human JoaT and Strong Back racial characteristics seem a better choice than permanent Night Sight.

That mostly depends on your equipment. If your armor is poor, then you will have a tough time with some of them. Copper and Valorite elementals reflect damage when hit, so you will need to be careful fighting them with a fast weapon (you will not be able to heal through the reflection and their own hits). All of the ore elementals (except dull copper, which you cannot dig up anyways) are effected by an Earth Elemental Slayer (be careful with these around the Copper and Valorite eles too).

None of the ore elmentals cast spells. Why would you need magic resist?

* Any other suggestions or comments?
How do you plan to get around? You might want to add some Chivalry to gain some additional options for offense and defense.

My tamer has magery and uses a mage weapon. Kills the shadow elementals just fine. Answers the "how will you get around?" question above.

Barry and Mark, thanks for your replies. My resourcer would get around using rune books charged with recall scrolls. I also have a scribe, so there would be ready source of scrolls. Oh, I'm assuming elves, with no JoaT, magery, or chivalry, can use charges in a runebook, right?

It's basically an old-time mana-less build -- just enough to travel with runebook and use an occasional special move. With swords, parry, and lumberjacking, he'll have the 300 xp to get the special move costs reduced by 10. Since none of the ore elementals use magic, there would indeed be no use for Resisting Spells on this guy.

He'd be primarily an axer, with a nice sword and shield handy should the need arise. The reflect physical damage issue could be overcome by keeping a pure-elemental-damage axe handy, right?

No need to waste 120 scroll for ele fighter. Even 110 would be enough, add a bit hci and dci and you'll be invulnerable.
You can use charges in runebook without fails. :)

Copper Elemental - Reflects spell damage. Reflects 50% of melee damage. Immune to Level 4 Poison and below.
Valorite Elemental - Level 4 Poison Immunity, Immune to most magic, Reflects ALL magic damage, Ranged Gas Attack, Immune to pets and provoked creatures.

So it's not about reflect physical damage issue.

And the Valorite ele has the copper's reflect 50% melee damage, and the ability to break any worn items not blessed, cursed or insured.

My advice would be to get some good skill-boosting equipment, lower the other skills a bit, and add about 60-80 Chivalry.

My ele-hunter's build is over 800 skill points, and that includes 120 natural Macing, and 120 Smith. I use the Ancient Samurai Do (+10 Parry), Arms of Tactical Excellence (+12 tactics - skill is 90 natural for full use of special moves), a Dupre's Shield (+5 Parry) and Chivalry, Anatomy & additional Parry bonuses from jewelry.

Does he break it instantly or just hit durability? So you can repair it?

Looks like I'll be making a disposable elemental-hunting suit then

Do they reflect archery damage too?

Probably because you can keep your distance and not get hit by them. Now all you have to do is heal the reflected damage.

Do they reflect archery damage too?
Yes, they reflect all forms of melee damage.
