Best Shot in the Realm
2010 Season Begins

The Best Shot in the Realm, Baja's free and only archery contest sponsored by the Misfits of Society Guild, and in the spirit of the Society of Archers, began its 2nd season on the cold and blustery Saturday evening of January 30th.

Toni Fierce, GM of M!S, hailed all the archers assembled at the Skara Brae Fairgrounds and welcomed them to a new season of monthly events . With just a few tweaks in the rules, the shooting instructions were given, and 23 archers gathered around the archery buttes named for Sire Theoran, the past GM of Society of Archers (S|A).

For those not familiar with the BSR, this archery contest consists of a round robin shooting style with a series of four rounds with a progressively higher score needed to advance to the next round. These four rounds are 70 points, 100 points, 150 points and finally 200 points. The monthly champion gets an engraved bow, one million in gold and a spot in the seasons ending Champion of Champions shoot-off of the 12 monthly winners.

The 1st round started and anticipation of being 2010's first monthly winner and locking up that coveted seat in the Champions shoot-off seemed on few minds as the first seven shooters easily made the mark until Bucko just made the cut with a 70. The realization of a couple bad shots or gusts of wind entered many minds and then it happened -- Cherokee, an accomplished shooter and a monthly winner from 2009 shot an unheard of 30 and was GONE!! WOW! Geeze! What happened?? was heard from the crowd but alas, Cherokee was finished for the night. It should be noted that BumbleBee and Wrath posted 200's and robin hoods (RHs) in this early round.

The second round found shooters concentrating more with RHs from Howard Hill, Bain, Lord the Great One, Uverworld, Lance and Wrath (his 2nd 200 in a row) but also saw the demise of Maci, Parisa, Tsukiko (2009's Grand Champion), Morgance Fier, and PoePoe.

The third round had 17 shooters still in the hunt with Ahebban, Howard Hill, and Lazarus posting RHs while 6 others fell aside including Wrath .and Delilah Rose, (thought to be a close relative of GM Toni Fierce). Four of those who didn't make it had just a round earlier split arrows and seemed to be thinking of the Crown two rounds away. It should be noted that errant gusts of wind were swirling thru the fairgrounds and the chill of the evening made bows tight and nerves tighter.

The fourth round (the toughest) is usually the Crowning Round. All you have to do is shoot two bulls-eyes and a RH and the title is yours; just put a 200 on the board and the evening is over. Eleven archers were thinking this same thing and five archers in this round had already done this earlier but, yes, but, shooting a Robin Hood in an earlier round would either brings ahhhhs from the crowd or murmurs of he wasted that one! Frigin Azin and Isabella each shot their 12th consecutive bulls-eyes but not one shooter could split a shot and a fifth and final round was commenced .

In the fifth round Toni Fierce explained that contestants would be called one at a time, and each would shoot five shots with the title going to the highest score. Bain started the round with five bulls-eyes, not an easy task but no one believed with this group of archers it would be a winner. Three shooters later BumbleBee matched that and two shooters later Sanarr, a new shooter to this event and coming out of nowhere, shot three bulls-eyes and 2 RHs and there it was 350 points in five shots! Lazarus next tried to duplicate this feat and had 2 bulls-eyes and 2 RHs but added an inner ring shot for 310. This would usually win many shoot-offs. Also posting RHs in this round were Kitty, Ahebban, and Isabella -- but no one could match Sanarr's 350. Now looking back at Sanarr's earlier rounds, this reporter noticed 11 bulls-eyes and one inner ring shot but no RHs; just a quiet-like consistent shooting night, and now a shooter to be reckoned with.

Toni Fierce awarded Sanarr his engraved bow, 1-million gold and 2010's first locked-in entry to the season's ending Champion of Champions event.

Misfits of Society would like to invite all archers of the land to attend the February contest, which will commence at 8:30 p.m. Pacific (9:30 Mountain, 10:30 Central, 11:30 Eastern) on February 27th at the Skara Brae Fairgrounds. * Raises Bow*
