New Player's Gold Guide (1m in your first couple of weeks!)

I haven't really seen any guides for this in the past, so I thought I would write something out that has helped me get started from 0-1m gold in my first week on a new server (with zero help).

First off, make an elvish fighter character who uses Melee weapons (unless you want to make a fletcher... arrows can be expensive). For the sake of argument, let's say a Swordsman. You will want to run as many escort quests as you can while in New Haven until you start fighting. This will help with buying skills (400g per skill to 40)

Run through the following quests to get the basic needs: Swordsmanship, Tactics, Parrying, Focus, Bushido, Chivalry, Anatomy, Healing. You will also want to have at least 100 bandages on you to start.

Head over to Old Haven and start killing zombies with your increased gains. Hold off on using Chivalry at first (as it costs money to use) and focus more on Bushido, I usually won't even learn Chivalry until I have a few thousand gold to tithe. Every time you kill a zombie, loot everything but the body parts and bone armor, since everything else should sell.

When you become overweight with items (remember to swap out your mundane gear for found gear) head back to New Haven and sell everything. You will want to buy armor, I highly suggest focusing on Physical Damage right now since everything that hits you in this guide is going to do it using this type.

Deposit your gold, turn in any quests you have completed, buy more bandages, tithe some gold, start on Chivalry. You are going to hang out here until your Swordsmanship and Tactics are at least up to 55 (your other skills should pass this quickly except for Bushido and Chivalry).

When you have 55 skill, you are going to want to head to Trammel's Yew Crypts and fight Skeletons. Stay at the south end of the first room and kill them as they spawn, which should be VERY fast. When you are confident that you can handle them, move to the door and stand in the middle. Remember to loot the corpses and ignore the Bone Armor.

Stay here and keep doing this. I went into the crypts with about 1000 bandages and would loot only the gold, on average I would make about 25-50 gold per skeleton and could kill somewhere around 8 skeletons a minute. While 25-50 gold isn't all that much, when you hang out there for an hour, it adds up (12,000 - 24,000 per hour). You can stay here as long as you like, but your gains should stop somewhere around 75% in swords and around 80% in tactics, and those last 5% of each of those will be VERY slow. I stayed here for about four hours and had to hit the bank twice. I made around 50k in those four hours.

Next, you should move on to Ettins. The best place to fight them at this level is in Despise in Feluccia. On high population shards you may see others while hunting here, but on the low pop shards I have never seen anyone here but myself. The Ettins should spawn fairly quickly and drop 175-225g each as well as special gear. The gear can be skipped, though, since it weighs more than it is worth now. Stay here until your skill is around 85/90% in Swords/Tactics. It took me another four hours to reach this level and I made around 200k while doing it and had to return to the bank six times to drop off my gold.

At this point, I went ahead and paid for some full physical resist studded leather armor with LMC, HCI, DI, and DCI. It was now time to move on to the Earth Elementals, but I wanted ones that weren't TOO hard and that spawned quickly. Welcome to the New Haven Mines!

These Earth Elementals don't give any more gold than the Ettin do, but they do give one special thing, which is jewels. The jewels add to the value of the Earth Elemental by roughly 25-100g per kill, but you may have to make a few extra trips to the bank. The Earth Elementals spawn very quickly and a fighter can clean up very well here (so can a young Mage with E-Bolt btw). They will also train you up to 100% in both Swords and Tactics... but this will likely take a long time.

You can get from 0-100% in both Swords and Tactics with this method and will earn more than 1m gold AFTER you have bought your suit (which should run you in the 300-400k range) in roughly five to ten days if you play four hours per day (roughly 20 -40 hours). The use of Scrolls of Alacrity while fighting the Skeletons and Ettin will drasticly reduce the time you have to spend with them (but will also reduce the gold you get), but they can cost anywhere from 200-500k each(!), which if you're starting from zero may not be the best use of your money.

Some Things To Remember:
  • Felucca is dangerous, but has many great hunting grounds that are usually free of traffic (because it's dangerous).
  • Remember to keep an eye on your gear's durability! Broken gear won't give you any benefits, so when you hit the town to trade in your gold you will want to make sure nothing needs to be replaced.
  • The build I started you on can make you into a Sampire. All you need is 99/100 in Necromancy and you're ready to go! You will need to drop skills as well, there are other articles to read about Sampire Builds.
  • Insure your Gear! If you're fighting somewhere and you die (it will happen) and you can't get to your gear, you've just wasted time because now you need to get more gear and everything you've gained (except for skill) is likely to be lost. If you in sure your gear, though, you can fight your way back and keep going.

I'm going to throw one more trick in there. Around 85-90% in Swords/Tactics you should get yourself going on some good gear. If you've racked up around 1m, it will be enough to gather the reagents to imbue yourself a pretty good suit. Once you have it, head over to the Painted Caves and try fighting the Trogs there. Warning though! They spawn almost instantly after one dies. I got to the point where I was having to walk all over the place because their corpses were so thick I couldn't find the one I just killed. They drop about 450 gold per kill and if you're working on an imbuer of your own they drop a LOT of stuff for you to break down.

My character had a Double Axe that I had imbued with HML, HSL, HLD and Repond Slayer. I drop the Trogs in about 3-5 hits and my health pretty much never moves since I am in Vampiric Embrace form (PS: I trained Necromancy, too). I went there last night for one hour and made about 200k /hr.

Let me add that I like the fact that you wrote this all down. I'd be interested in hearing your success story about your first billion, btw.

Well ... First off I think, a new character/player should not concentrate on gold farming. There is so much to learn about the game mechanics that I woul call it wasted time, following your guidelines. (It is a playstyle. But there are plenty more in the game to discover.)

Things that i definetely would add into your guide:
- Spend some of your first gold (at least from the first million) to build a small/medium home. The housing system is one of THE game systems, which makes UO that unique. (Usually i would recommend something like a small sandstone with a pation. Its not that expensive but has a good number of floor tiles to play around with. Ask for help to find a decent place to build one: best would be a walking distance from a moongate with a public neighbour house, which has at least a soulforge for working on imbuing.)
- First armour to look for would be one with max phys resist. If you ask nicely, you should be able to get one at really low costs or even for free. (Optimal would be hunting some lizardman in new haven for the leather and asking for a tailor to make you studded armour pieces out of it. Thats usually enough for 70 phys res and you get some luck for free on top of that.)
- Play around with different slayer weapons, if you go for a melee char: orc slayer, gargoyle slayer, earth ele slayer etc. All work wonders on a halfway trained char.
- If you can imbue a weapon with 'HML, HSL, HLD and Repond Slayer' you are already far beyond your first earned million. Thought for farming trogs with a swordsman, you could try to buy a soul seeker. If you ask around nicely, you should get one for around 250-300k. Which is still a lower price class than a similar imbued weapon (like the mentioned double axe). And again having 70 phys resist is enough as mainstat for farming trogs.
- Try to buy some cheaper powerscrolls early. 110 vs 100 weaponskill makes such a difference, that it would be one of the first things to buy for me personally. Only finding someone to sell one could be difficult. (As before asking nicely in the general chat should help.)
- Looting all trogs is a bit difficult. Since i mostly play with the ec and pincos UI enabled, I can give only tips for that case. Try this settings: 'enable clickable overhead names' along with options: show names:approaching and show corpses names. This will give you a clickable name for each killed mob, that will open his corpse when clicked on the text line for it. Alternatively use 'enable auto-ignore corpses' from the pinco options and the show all gumps shortcut (str +shift). In the classic client you have to move around to avoid having too many corpses stacking on each other. (You should do that in the ec, too. Course corpses get shown two times with the first pinco settings. First when a mob dies and second when the corpse goes public. You might get into problems, opening the fresh corpses whenn the old ones around you becoming public after each other.)

GREAT additional tips! I totally forgot about the Soul Seeker. I have two of them (bought one and someone gave me one, no clue why) and I found them to be great for training with anything Repond. Once I moved to the E. Elementals though I stopped using it and then I got my Axe... it wasn't too hard ;)

I do definitely recommend getting a house put up ASAP. On Atlantic you may have a hard time finding one in Trammel, but if you search long and hard you should be able to find a spot somewhere (I had a rather nice house on Felucca myself when I started). Lower population shards still have room for castles (or at the very least, a keep), so there is also that option.

I also found another interesting perk of fighting the Trogs. After about three hours last night my character reached Fame Level 5. So my fighter, Seona, is now a Lady. Which is perfect since she's about a 4-5 days from becoming the new Governor of Jhelom. So if you want to farm some fame to get your Lord/Lady title, the Trogs will do it fairly quickly. You can then mark a rune for the Daemon Altar and get your Sacrifice Virtue up fairly quickly. I found that most of the Trogs were giving anywhere from 30-60 fame per kill, so farming more fame up won't take too long with these guys.

Let me add that I like the fact that you wrote this all down. I'd be interested in hearing your success story about your first billion, btw.
*whimpers* Billion? That seems like such an absurd number... I just ran the math and fighting Trogs it would take somewhere around 2000 hours to do that... That seems a bit excessive. I will be fighting these trogs for many hours to come to finish off my Tactics/Swordsmanship, but I doubt it's going to take me quite THAT long to do.

If you can get a demon slayer weapon try Tsuki Wolves. Those give way better gains than Troglodytes. (Gold should be similar, thought fame/karma is less and you might need to walk around a bit, but the gains should be worth it.)
Clay Golems are very nice for gains, too. But the direct gold loot really drops at them and they can be difficult with a lower spawn rate.
(Actually I would use a luck sculpture and hunt for clay golems with the luck boost and Tsuki Wolves afterwards. Depending on your personal luck, you can loot several/enough rare ML gems from them to even out the lower gold income.)

I just realized ANOTHER great way to make a bit of money, though this one requires you to have a Vendor. Once you have your house and you're fighting whatever you're fighting, take a bag with you and stash everything that's dropped in the bag (even worthless items) and when you fill up, teleport home, toss the bag in the trash, stash your gold, grab another bag, and head back in. You will earn points from trashing the items and you can buy stuff like the Protection Boots, Virtue Tiles, and other things that you can then stash on your vendor and sell. Those Virtue tiles sell for around 200k each and only cost 10k points, i earned 10k points in a bit over an hour, so this basically doubled my income. (especially with those nasty Trogs)

Just remember, this is more of invested time than instant gratification.

Thanks for this guide in general. I am a returning player and I am thinking I am going to start a new character just to get my footing and I might just follow this guide to earn some gold and then to figure out gearing as it is now to get me back up to speed.

One question I have on the post I quoted; what do you mean by "toss the bag in the trash?" Is there trash in houses now? I think I turned my last house I owned into a deed so I should have that much available. Just want to make sure I have this part right.

Two options now:

  • Place a Venus Fly Trap (16th anniversary gift) (will give you a target cursor)
  • Say: "I wish to place a trash barrel" (appears where you are standing) - don't forget to secure this one so you can put more items in it with no weight limit

For some reason I cannot edit my posting. One thing to add which you might not know yet: If you throw away things in trash barrels you may get "Cleanup Points"

Not all items yield cleanup points.

Nice information, as a returning player to the game after an extended break this gives me some ideas on where to bash things on the new character I rolled up. Have got to get a feel for things again before I take one of the other characters out.
