Moonglow Zoo donation only accepts gold??

I figured that while raising taming I might as well donate some critters and earn points. However - the only items that shows the donate button are gold and checks. Even when I stand next to the donation box with a tame unicorn.

Is there something I missed that I need to do in order to be able to donate animals?

There is a list of animals the box accepts.

Try transferring your Unicorn to the box. As you would do to another player...

It does accept Unicorns and KiRins.... as well as Dragons and Drakes.
