Monk's Robe: a forbidden item?

I found a brown shroud on the ground at the Tram Brit bank on Napa. It said it was "A Monk's Robe" (insured). I have a very vague recollection of some drama associated with these items. Are they verboten, or am I OK keeping it? It looks kinda neat.

Yes, dyeable monk robes would be great!

I guess you wouldn't want someone dyeing them red and impersonating a GM...but why not let them be dyeable only with the Special Dye Tub?
